Dog bites?

So, today has been a miserable day. DD started getting sick yesterday, and we both woke up today absolutely terribly sick. Runny nose but still congested, itchy eyes, tired, her fever was 100.2 before she went to bed. To top it all off, she went crawling down the hallway, and before I could go after her, my parents grumpy 13 year old dog bit her on the arm, so now she has a whole mouth full of teeth marks in a big circle on her arm. She went to bed at 8:30, which is about an hour early for her. Sigh. I think it's going to be a long night!

I washed the bite with soap and water, and put some neosporin on it to make sure it stays clean under her pajamas. Is there anything else I can do to it, or should that be enough? It didn't break the skin it doesn't look like.

Re: Dog bites?

  • If it didn't break the skin I would just keep it clean and watch it.  My dog and I got attacked by a loose dog last year and the other dog bit me and broke the skin in two places on my hand.  I went to the ER for a tentnus shot and they just cleaned it out and told me to keep it covered since it was open and to clean it multiple times a day.

  • If it didn't break the skin, you don't really need to worry about infection.

Watch for bruising and/or swelling, as the pressure from a bite generally causes bruising.

  • You might want to check with your pedi, but since it didn't break the skin, just keeping an eye on it is probably fine.  My uncle was given antibiotics after my dog bit him.  Sorry you had such a bad day!
  • Dog bites can be very very serious. I would call your pedi and make sure that your parents dog is current on it's Rabies vaccine. I wouldn't be surprised if  your pedi has to report it to public health.
