Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

1 year olds in Daycare

My ds is starting daycare in 2 months. I'm curious what the feeding schedule for 1 year-olds is at your facility.  My son will not take a bottle, or anything but water from a cup and I am worried how we are going to get him fully nurished in daycare.  Right now he is doing three meals of solids a day w/ water, and I am nursing him the rest of the time.  TIA, Steph

Re: 1 year olds in Daycare

  • DD goes to daycare and by law they are required to eat a certain amount of foods in there care.  DD's provider went over the list of list with me, ie.  they are supposed to serve a certain amount of proteins, dairy, etc. throughout the day.

DD gets breakfast when she gets there, snack, lunch, snack.  She also gets her bottle a couple times a day.

just have open communication with your provider.  Tell them what works in your house and they should follow your suggestions.

Don't worry, it will all work out and he will nourished...

  • DD eats breakfast w/ milk, then lunch at 11:00 w/ milk, has an afternoon snack around 3:00 w/milk. Are you planning on continuing to nurse after 12 months? Maybe you could start introducing cow milk at 11 months and get him used to drinking out of a sippy, then you could replace the nursing sessions w/ cow milk.
  • My DD is in daycare, just started, and is in the 12-18 month room.  We provide all her food and drinks for now and they follow whatever schedule the parents give.  At a year, I don't think it is as necessary that he take in as much milk, so maybe he will be able to get by with just water or juice during the day.  A lot can change in 2 months too, just keep working on it with him, he'll get it.
  • My DS has always eaten much better at daycare than at home!  I think it's peer pressure, lol!  No really, I think he works up such an appetite and it's such a standard routine there and all the other kids are eating too- so it's just natural.  Our daycare center does breakfast, lunch, and a snack.  They have regular access to their sippy cups, but they usually stick to the routine and all eat and drink and even poop at the same time.  They post the week's menu ahead of time, so if there is anything that you don't want him to have, you can plan ahead.  But honestly, I've been there at lunch time and some of the stuff they eat looks GOOD!  We are lucky and the cook at our center is awesome.  I wish he'd make lunch for me sometimes.  I don't worry about his nutrition at daycare... now at home- I'm still getting the hang of it!
