teachers - lesson plans during maternity leave???

I'm working really hard to get my lesson plans all set and ready to go for the 6+ weeks I will be gone. I only have 3 weeks of paid leave built up and DH made a point today that i'm doing a lot of work for something i'm not getting paid for...

I'm going to do my lesson plans because I want my students to actually learn something while I'm gone but I was wondering how much work you are doing for your sub.  What are you required to do and how much extra are you actually doing?

Re: teachers - lesson plans during maternity leave???

  • I'm sitting here doing the same thing right now.  Basically my administrator told me that I can either plan out the entire time, or do as much as I can.  She said it just depended on how easy I wanted my return to be.  Meaning, if I leave it up to the sub to plan and run everything I may come back to a disaster.  So, I'm trying my best to plan as much as I can.  But I have decided that once I go I will disconnect myself - if I'm not getting paid to work, and at times paying the sub from my own paycheck, then I'm not going to do anymore once I'm on leave.

  • I'm not sure what I'm required to do, but I'm making lesson plans for my sub for the entire time I'm gone.  I teach elementary PE and am still not sure if my sub will know PE or not.  I just want to leave my kids with the same kinds of plans and expectations, whether I'm there or not.  I've already told them what is planned for them while I'm gone and they know that they can lose their regular PE if they can't make it with my sub.  I'm trying to cover as many bases as possible before I leave so I won't be worrying about it when I'm gone.
  • I don't think I'm going to actually create lesson plans but I will leave the sub resources and activities that could be used during the time that I'm gone. I teach 9th grade world geography.
  • 6 weeks is a long time to write out plans!?We are asked to do 2 weeks of vague lesson plans. My long term sub will be coming in and spending a week with me before I leave so she'll get a better idea on how things are run in my room. I am leaving her with my daily agenda and a monthly focus for each subject. I've also got most of the papers copied for her and will put them in a file cabinet.??She'll have access to my assessments so she can plan and prep for the standards tests. Does that seem like a lot??

  • I'm only coming back the last two weeks of school anyway, so she can pretty much do what she pleases while I'm gone.?

  • I will not be leaving lesson plans for my sub. My plans for this maternity leave are the same as the last time I was on leave and that worked out fine! My sub will come in for three days (M W F) to "shadow" me and I will leave her my curriculum calendars for each of the subject areas (I teach 1st). I will go over my basic routines and we will discuss each child and their special needs, etc. My teammates are fabulous and will be a huge help. My district makes a point of hiring experienced, excellent people as subs and I have no worries.

  • I run a kindergarten after school type program that does have cirriculum.  Depending on how much planning time the powers that be give me will determine how well stocked I will leave my class with plans.  Many of the things I use are my personal belongings and will be coming home with me when I leave.

  • I will be out for the remainder of the school year (12-13 weeks) so I am not leaving daily lesson plans.  I have my curriculum mapped out and will give that to the sub.  I will leave specific lesson plans for the first week and then it is the sub's responsibility.

  • I will be gone the last 6 weeks of school ~ planned this pregnancy well :o) I have planned most everything already, I teach 1st. Lately I have been busy getting things organized and copied. My sub already knows my daily/weekly routine and knows the kiddos really well, so I have no worries. I still have some open spots in my days/weeks to fill in or I might give her the opportunity to fill them in.
  • I teach 9th grade Algebra in Texas and when I come back we will have the TAKS test to worry about.  This test sucks and basically they use it as a measuring technique as to how well I taught that year so I'm leaving very specific, detailed lessons with answer keys and everything, i'm just finding that it's very time consuming.  I think this is the only way I will have peace of mind while i'm gone.

  • I teach HS science. I left a calendar of what topics to cover when and paper and electronic sets of resources  (worksheets, labs, tests, etc) that I use for each topic. I had the first week completely planned; beyond that, they will need to decide what they do.

Hopefully it will all work out!

  • I only am required to do 2 weeks, however I have done 7.  My sub is going to shadow me for 2 days next week so she can get an idea how I run my classroom.  I teach 1st grade and I have a lot of students with strong personalities and so I wanted her to be able to focus on that and not what to plan.
  • Met with my LTS on our workday last Tuesday. ?Showed her the curriculum sheet we use that plans out the 9 weeks and where she may be starting. ?The map shows the math, writing, whole group reading pacing guides. ?The only thing she really has to plan for is small group reading and content. ?It also helps that she was my student teacher in the fall :)
  • 8 weeks of lesson plans? oh HELL no.  :)

I am leaving a week of plans and all of my instructional materials. My two subs are capable of writing their own plans- it took me a while to find two good ones. I teach English and Transition Skills to high school students with learning and behavior disabilities. My biggest concern is that they do not kill each other, basically.

  • I just had to get them started. I was planning on doing a week. I started during the 1st part of break and wanted to finish doing the rest of the week- but being admitted to the hospital and having the baby, messed that up. Needless to say, I only had 3 days worth of plans. I did have all the warm-ups done for the entire leave.

  • I was put on leave, so I never came back after the holiday break and I don't think I will come back until I'm done with maternity leave.  I had, luckily, done the first week back's lesson plans, but my sub has been handling my plans since.  I did do report cards, but I don't plan to do them for the next cardmarking -- it won't make sense since I won't have been there for any of the marking period.
  • Our Supply Teachers have to be certified teachers, so we are asked to do one week's worth of plans to get them started and that is all.  Of course they will have access to the curric. guides, etc. and my teammates will be there as a resource.  This is one of the reasons they get paid more than a regular sub.  Depending on when my baby comes, I will be out on mat. leave until the end of the year (or within a week or so), so the class is basically her's once I leave.
  • That's nice.  Our subs just have to have around 30 college credits.  They try and find someone who knows the material for long term positions though.  My sub has taught calculus before but he's 75 years old and it's been awhile.  He will be much different than me since I'm 27 and have a "younger" approach to the 14 year olds.  Oh well.  They'll survive.
