Babies: 0 - 3 Months

RAST results in: Negative.

Which means I'm very confused, elated, but confused nonetheless. Charlie had all the symptoms of an allergy and even got better (minus diarrhea) after the switch to Alimentum. He has been on Alimentum for a couple weeks and the diarrhea has persisted. DH and I decided that we don't want the diarrhea to continue, obviously, so we are going back to a milk based formula and will try Gentlease again. We only tried it for a day before the Pedi wanted to switch him to Alimentum. I'm thinking maybe regular Enfamil Lipil was just to strong for his belly.

Re: RAST results in: Negative.

  • Have you tried elecare or neocate? I forgot what you had said. That might be the trick.

  • No, we haven't. We may have to though if the Gentlease doesn't work. I just can't figure it out. The only thing I can come up with is that maybe he was sick at the time we switched and an illness just escalated reflux symptoms so much that it made it seem like an allergy. I honestly have no idea.
  • I REALLY think you should try either of those. It might solve all your problems.

I know you are dealing with a milk intolerance with your daughter. Do you have any idea if an intolerance and not an allergy would provide a negative RAST? I'm sure it would. I need to google the difference between the two a little bit. I also intend on asking the Pedi this next week when we see her.

  • I do know that an intolerance is different than an allergy. I just think Neocate is the biggest gift on the planet. Like I said, Alimentum did not solve her problems, she still had issues.

Then Neocate came along and I could hear angels singing :). hehe. It has been so great.

  • How do they do this test?  We are trying to figure out DS's formula/reflux issues and I curious to know how they figure these things out.  He is currently on Alimentum and has the worst diarrhea.  He was on soy formula before and was completely constipated.  I have no idea what to do next.

  • I know what you mean about angels singing. DS has been an absolute joy and if the diarrhea wasn't there I would not even think twice about switching. Thanks for all of your support through this. I appreciate it.
  • The RAST was a blood test. The results took a week to come in. The Pedi tried telling us that loose stools were normal with Alimentum. In return we told her that we were aware of that but pure liquid stools were not. I'm extremely frustrated with this process.

  • My older DD was the same way. She has a dairy intolerance, not an allergy. It doesn't show up on a RAST test. An allergy is an immune system problem, an intolerance is a digestive problem.  Probably he can't break down the proteins in the milk, and he did better on Alimentum b/c it is already partially broken down.

We have seen the same symptoms in the baby, and since I am BFing ehr, I am now dairy free :(

I took my older DD to a GI doctor, and they hope that she will outgrow it. However, they dont want to test her until she is at least 3.

Good luck, let me know if you have any more questions!
