My sister never bought a birth certificate with her when she flew with her DS. She did get questioned once because DS looked big for his age around 1.5. At 2, you have to buy a ticket for your child.
Perhaps you can call the airline directly because each airline has a different set of policies.
We just flew with DS. ?I had called the airline and the airport and both said no documentation was needed. ?We were never asked for anything and it all went smoothly.
I just flew Southwest and a birth certificate was required and reviewed at the ticket counter and through security. I would call the airline to double-check!
We've never needed a birth certificate, even with Southwest. But that may be because we've always bought DS a seat and they didn't need to confirm age.
we've flown four times with DS and never needed a birth cert. we've always flown Northwest though. the only time we needed a "ticket" was when we flew to Mexico and it just meant paying the taxes. and we did need a passport for that flight.
