My nipples feel sore and tired. I just weaned myself from a nipple shield a week and a bit ago, so I'm still working on the 'proper latch'. BFing doesn't hurt when DD is nursing (except for a second at the beginning when she latches on), but my nipples feel hot and uncomfortable in my bra. Is this normal? I use lansinoh every time (I'd die without it) and now I'm icing...should I call a Lactation consultant or is this par for the course? TIA...
Re: Re: Should my Nips feel this way?
I was about to give up on BFing around 5 1/2 weeks because of the soreness, and was thrilled when the pain finally subsided around 6 weeks. I used a nipple shield in the beginning (the hospital gave me two to take home). I went to a BFing support group at the hospital when DS was 3.5 weeks, and the LC said DS was just a very voracious eater, and that he bruised my nipples. (Ow, that sounds painful just typing it!!)
When I weaned from the shield, the pain was definitely worse than it had been with the shield, but I was getting so fed up with having to wash the shield all the time. I would say that it was about 2 weeks after weaning completely off the shield that the pain was gone. Though I do still have some discomfort if I haven't nursed for awhile and my let-down reflex starts.
I would say if you have a free BFing support group or a La Leche League meeting available, try it out, and ask lots of questions. If you have to pay a private LC to come out, maybe hold off to see if the pain subsides with your Lanisoh and ice remedies.
Good luck and keep it up! It's hard, but you will be able to get through it!
