Coughing baby, help please!

We have a Dr appt in the morning, but he's just coughing so violently.  Is there anything I can do or give him to soothe him?  It sounds like he's trying to cough up flem...which makes me concerned that it could turn into bronchitis or pneumonia.  (Yes, I'm totally paranoid!)  Thanks for the suggestions!

Re: Coughing baby, help please!

  • 1) incline the area that he sleeps. So if he's in the crib, put a pillow underhis mattress to help him be up a bit

    2) turn on the showe AS HOT as the water will go. Take ds in there and sit with him until the hot water runs out. The steam opens them up and helps break up eveeyrthing (do this twice a day)

    3) get a vicks vaporize in his room, it'll help clear him up too

those 3 should help. It was miserable, we went to the ER because ds was coughing so hard and choking.

    Good luck

  • My DS had a terrible cough a few weeks ago. Our pedi told us to use saline nose spray with suction, a humidifier, and tylenol to help him sleep. It seemed to really help. Good luck, I hope you guys have a good night.

  • DS just got over RSV, and was coughing violently with that.  I don't want to worry you by saying that.  It actually wasn't a bad case because he got over it in about 1.5 weeks, and is completely fine.  If you have a humidifier, use that, let the baby sleep on a little incline.  If you find the baby can't stop, run the hot shower and take him (her?) in there.  They will eventually calm down.  How old??

  • Just want to clarify incase it isn't obvious...pps don't mean take baby in the shower, just the bathroom!!!

I assume you know that, but when I read those responses you couldn't really tell that's what they meant.  Hope your dc feels better soon!

  • take your lo in the bathroom with the shower running on full hot like pp said but strip dc down to just a onesie and clap them on the back and chest where the lungs are. do it harder than a burp. i had to do this for dd. it helps break up the phlegm and gets them to spit it out.
  • vicks on the bottoms of his feet :)
  • Our kid did this one night, she coughed so much huge boogies came out of her nose. It was crazy, now when we hear the cough we use some little noses saline and a blue bulb sucker.

Also, sleeping on an incline is good. The nurse at our pedi office said if needed strap her into her carseat, or a bouncy seat.
