Kawasaki Disease

Some of you may remember that last weekend my 2 year-old nephew was submitted to the hosipital with suspected Meningitis.  The test came back positive (but only a few positive cells not the 1,000 that would normally come back positive).  They treated him and sent him home last Tuesday.

They decided that it was a false positive for meningitis.  Now, this morning he has been taken back to the hosipital with increased symptoms:

  • severe redness in the eyes
  • a rash on the stomach, chest, & legs
  • red, dry, cracked lips (much like chapped lips)
  • sore, irritated throat
  • swollen soles of the feet with a red color
  • swollen lymph nodes (doctor believes, although last week they said it was his thyroid)

He is now going to have an echocaridogram today & hope that no heart damage has yet occured.

They are going to start treating him for Kawaski Disease, hopefully they are right this time!  What is so frustrating is that they are a highly rated children's hospital and didn't catch this last weekend.  They sent him home.  The risk of heart problems increases each day this goes untreated and is common after 10 days of symptoms.  Today is the 10th day!

Thank you if you made it through reading all of this.  Thank you also for your thoughts & prayers!

Re: Kawasaki Disease

  • Oh my gosh!  I can't believe it!  How are his parents taking it? That has got to be so frustrating and worrisome.

I hope he's okay and that the treatment is just what he needs.  I will pray that he fully recovers without heart problems.

  • It is really frustrating especially for the rest of the family.  My sister is only 21 and with two children.  She tends to get wrapped up in whatever guy is in her life tells her.

She has decided that NO one can come to the hospital except her and this guy (who is not the father of the sick child).  She also has taken the youngest child to this guys parents and is not allowing any of us to help out.  I just cannot imagine what she is thinking right now.  I guess I just shouldn't try to figure her out!

She is not allowing my parents to go to the hospital which is tearing my Mom apart.  It is so frustrating.  I just hope everything works out!

  • That is so sad!  I hope they can get him feeling better soon.
  • Oh no! I hope he gets feeling better soon.
  • Oh how scary!  Continued prayers to all!

  • lots of prayers!
  • Wow, that's tough. I think I heard that John Travolta's son had that when he was little,  I saw a snippet of a Larry King interview after Jett died. I think they said it was hard to diagnosis, that's no excuse. I hope that they figure it out and treat him. I am sorry your sister is being a pain, she needs to let her family in to help. I will keep your family in my prayers.
  • I'm sorry to hear he's having more problems. My thoughts and prayers are with him and your family.

Kawasaki's is one of those syndromes that is pretty hard to diagnose, especially in the early stages before the other symptoms develop. It isn't one of the "normal" things you expect to find when a kiddo has a really high fever...meningitis is.

Most kids do get better and have no related problems, so I will keep my fingers crossed that he is one of them!
