so... yesterday the dr. said my little one has reflux. Her main symptoms are randomly spitting up clear fluid. He gave us a prescription for Zantac, and said to switch formula to Alimentum. I questioned him about going straight to Alimentum and he said we could try soy for a few weeks first. So, which soy formula should I use? Enfamil or Similac?
?Also, should I use the Zantac or see if switching formula helps first?
?He mentioned thickening the formula with rice cereal, but I am worried about her choking on it. She is only 7 weeks.. Isn't that too early for Cereal, AND medicine?
?This all makes me nervous. I dont want her little esophagus hurting, but I dont want to cause more problems either...
Any suggestions would be appreciated!?
Re: Reflux... lotsa questions.
Does she cry when she spits up? If not, there isn't really a problem! If she really had GERD she'd be uncomfortable which you didn't mention..
DS #1 had reflux and would scream and arch his back after feedings. This happened anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours. He spit up a lot, but he also seemed to have silent reflux. The acids would come back up and it would burn putting him in pain.
Here is what worked and didn't work for us:
Zantac- worked for a month, but I believe as my son got bigger it was not as effective. We switched to Pepcid which did the trick as well.
Rice cereal in bottles- Made me really nervous, but we did it and it worked. The weight keeps the feedings down and any time I stopped we had major spit up. It CAN make them constipated so ask the pedi what you can do for it.
Switching formulas- Costly and did not work for us. That is an expensive formula and sis not help at all (for us.) We ended up using Target's version of Gentlease and that worked great. $16/can vs. $25/very small can. We swictched formulas often which did not help the poor little guy's tummy.
We started all of this at 2 weeks, so I don't think 7 weeks is too early. I would start with Zantac and see how that works. That should stop the burning, but won't help the spit up. The rich cereal helps with with the spit up. I would switch formulas last. WE noticed that there was a honeymoon period when we switched formulas of about 2 days. It would seem like the sympotoms were gone, but then they would come back.
This is only based on my experience with DS, so I would always go with what the pedi says first. Just giving you my experience.
Good luck! DS's reflux peaked at 4 months and then went away by 5 months.
She is only fussy for about an hour or so in the evening. Other than that she is fine. She spits up sometimes. And the past week or so she has just all of a sudden, while sleeping, puked clear liquid. She doesn't cry when it happens, it just comes out.?
I hate to start medicine... Should I thicken the formula? or switch to soy...? ?
Hmmm...If she isn't in pain, I would just switch the formula to soy. DS was in pain. Spitting up doesn't always mean GERD so if you can avoid the meds and rice cereal, do it.
Good luck! I am glad she isn't in pain.
DS is on Enfamil AR, which is thickend with rice starch. It helps to keep his food down. We also were on prevacid, and just switched from that to carafate. He also gets mylanta after he eats. I think if your DD is not fussy during feedings, then maybe just try the formula switch. That might do the trick. If she does not seem to be in pain, then meds seem unnecessary to me. Meds will only reduce/block acid and IMO are necessary only when the spit up is causing pain.
