NE1 have a cesarean hysterectomy?

Anyone done having kids and have a cesarean hysterectomy?  I have had tons of female problems (1.5 ovaries removed and 1 tube) and we know we are done having kids after this baby so are considering a hysterectomy during my c-sec.  I also cannot take hornomal birth control because of a blood condition I found out I had after experiencing a m/c.  So, at a minimum will get my final tube tied, but am thinking about getting it all removed to save myself any other trouble and surgeries since we know we are done.

So if you have done this:
Tell me about your experience.
Were you able to breastfeed?
How is it taking hormones?

I plan to sit down and talk seriously with my dr about all this but want to wait until I get further along in my pg.  So I thought I would seek out somone's words of experience first.

Thanks.

Re: NE1 have a cesarean hysterectomy?

  • you could have the hyster without removal of the ovaries (well, I guess 1/2 ovary, although if you've needed the rest removed you may want it removed) or cervix. (they leave the bottom portion/cervix).  most who keep the ovaries don't need hormone therapy.  my mom had it all removed when I was born.  went back and forth with hormone treatment (b/c of all the research, yea, nay, yea again).  I couldn't tell you a difference but she has other issues (multiple schlerosis) that supercede any side effects of hormone treatment. so not an issue.

for the most part, most OBs will not do elective hysters anymore.  tubals, sure... but elective hysters, most won't. one friend from work who has major issues with cramping, fibroids and menapausal sx was begging for one. but if there's not a good reason, most won't.  ?  talk to your ob.  I don't know all of your issues... so he / she may have better advice on which route to turn given your history.

    good luck

  • I think the biggest issues is the hormones.  Bad things happen if you take them.  Other bad things happen if you don't  so you have to pick which bad things you would rather risk having, and if they are worse than the bad things you have right now WITH your uterus.

Personally, I would probably wait.  I would want to be really really sure I was ready for that (not from the having babies perspective) before taking that step.  I wouldn't want to feel pressured to make the decision when a clock was ticking with delivery approaching.

  • Thanks for the info.  I will make my list of questions and talk to him at my next visit.

I already mentioned to him getting my remaining partial ovary taken out because it causes me such pain each month and I would hate to have another surgery later on b/c it needs to be removed. He said there was no point in leaving the uterus if we're removing the last ovary.  So I said we woult talk more later.  I was very early (about 6 weeks) in my pg and I was scared to talk too much at that point and jinx the pg : )
