Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

hysterosalpingogram - I had it

Hi everyone - I thought for those interested, I would tell you how my hysterosalpingogram was (this is an internal xray of uterus - using dye). I had one to scan why my AF was taking so long and am also having it for RPL testing reasons. I'll give as much detail - so TMI alerts!

So if your MD says you need one - it's not that bad. I had mine done at a radiologists office (some MDs do it in the hospital). all told it took an hour from filling out paperwork to leaving. First, they made me take a pregnancy test (obviously negative). You only have to strip on the bottom, and wear gown. I was laying on a very flat, hard table that had a towel on it (head on pillow). The doctor used the speculum (oh fun!), and the inserted the catheter. Let me tell you, doctors should not use food analogies. She said, the catheter is the size of a piece of angel hair pasta -- so it won't hurt a bit . . . (needless to say, I don't really want pasta now. . .) And while it didn't hurt, it was uncomfortable when they were putting the dye in (essentially they fill your uterus until it flows into tubes). they then have large xray machine on your abdomen and take the pic. It wasn't painful, but very uncomfortable.

all in all it was fine. she said things looked normal on first blush, but my own doctor will do more analysis (I go back in a week for results).

so hopefully you are all doing well and don't need to go through RPL type testing, but this was ok. We have all been through worse.

  • That doesn't sound too bad. No reason to think (yet) that I might need this, but it's nice to know that it's not painful or scary if I do. Thanks for sharing.

     Me too.

  • hey there I had an HSG done in July 2008.  My hsg experience was different because my right tube cramped (was nervous) so the dye was not flowing as it should.  They got me a little bowl so I could throw up in it ( I warned them).  It was due to the pressure i felt in my lower abdomen (felt like a period cramp).

Other than that, if you just try to relax and NOT be a nervous reck like me you will be ok.  I was a very rare case.  Although if you do have a blockage you'll feel some discomfort as they dye tries to push through like i did.

If your tubing is normal and hsg shouldn't hurt :-)!
