3rd Trimester

Low lying placenta

Hi Ladies,

I just got back from my drs. office and at my 20 wk U/S the result was I have a low lying placenta.  The Dr. said it's 1.5 cm away from my cervix right now.  I've read and she told me that more likely than not it will move up as my uterus grows and there won't be a problem however I asked her one question she didn't have the answer to:

If my placenta doesn't move for some reason - would I still have to have a c-section?

Also, what are the chances that a low lying placenta can become placenta previa?  Slim is what I was thinking but I coudlnt' find anything on it.  I don't see my OB until Feb 17th so any info woudl be great.

TIA

Re: Low lying placenta

  • I had the same problem at 21 weeks, had an u/s yesterday and my placenta is now where it should be.  I wouldn't worry about it, at least until your next u/s.

  • I had the same thing- low lying placenta at 20 wks. They said 9 times out of 10 it moves up...mine had not changed at 24 weeks, but at 31 it was all better!

My dr. did say that if it had not moved up by 37 weeks they would do a c/s because there is a risk if you try natural labor the placenta will deliver first...

  • I had the same placenta issues at 17 weeks up until my next US at 29 weeks, but your uterus will grow SO much so you'll probably be fine! They won't make any final decisions on CS or anything like that until a few weeks before you deliver, given that it doesn't move which is highly unlikely. Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy and don't worry about it!
  • what they said. i was on bedrest for my placenta being just over the cusp of my cervix and its moved on up out of the way. i wouldnt worry about it till you have to.
  • Yep me too; same problem at 20 weeks, but by 24 it had moved to it's appropriate position. But I was told if it hadn't moved by 36 or 37 weeks I would have a scheduled c/s because of the risk of bleeding out. I'm sure you'll be fine.
