nbr: a sign of the times..

I just got two emails from friends that own retail shops that they are closing down. This is so so sad. This makes six of us that closed down our businesses this year. All of these were well established shops but the economy crunch has killed them being high end boutique shops.

I hope we get a break soon. sigh.

  • You know we lost two businesses in 2008...

  • yup.

it just kills me to think of all the hard work that has gone into owning a small business for it just to be gone with the snap of a finger.

  • We just went to our favorite, locally-owned toy store this morning. I chatted with the owner, and they are barely keeping afloat. It makes me so sad, because this store is seriously cool.

I spent $60 there today - more than I budgeted for, but far less than I wish I could have spent.

I hope the economy starts improving soon. Or hell, I hope it just stabilizes soon. It's heartbreaking to see so many companies go under :(

  • Yeah, my mom works for a family owned orthodontist and her hours have been cut and my dad's company (a factory) can't get these big orders to go through because other company's credits won't go through banks so he might lose his job too. My job and DH's job froze raises. It's not good.
  • It is all very stressful, trying to raise a young family in these conditions.  No raises for us this year, no bonuses.  We do our best to support small, family owned businesses but it's hard.  I'm sorry you guys lost businesses--that's hard to see something you worked so hard for have to end.  I just hope 2009 is better for us all!
