1st Trimester

Dealing with fatigue at work

Please help me get through first trimester fatigue. I work a desk job and the job itself is already on the boring side so it's very hard to stay focused when all I want to do is sleep. My boss is aware I'm pregnant and I have lots of snacks I keep in my desk.

I swear if I still worked at my old job I'd be handling this better because that job was constant moving and talking to the public. I wish I still had that old job but this new one pays way more and gives me benefits so it is what it is. I hear it gets better in 2nd trimester but I'm only 7 weeks. How do I power through?

Re: Dealing with fatigue at work

  • I’m not sure if this is a feasible option for you at your work, but I’ll throw it out there because it’s the only thing that seems to be working for me. So you may want to ask your boss and see if they are cool with it!

I have an adjustable treadmill desk setup (made by Jarvis) that I moved into my office at work. Originally I just had it at my home office. But I just keep a pad underneath the treadmill base so it doesn’t disturb people on the floor below me. I keep tennis shoes in my office and just bring socks to work, so I can wear those when I’m not meeting with clients.

I typically walk for sixty minutes at a speed of 2mph (fast enough to get blood flowing, but slow enough to type). Alternatively, you could try taking walks on your lunch break or walking before work if possible. Trust me, I know it’s the last thing you feel like doing when you’re fighting for your life to get through the day. However, since I’ve started incorporating this into my day, there has not been one time where I do not feel a significant improvement in my energy while doing it and for the remainder of my day!

Obviously check with your doctor first as well! I hope this helps—hang in there!

  • First trimester fatigue is brutal, and you’re not weak for feeling this way. A few things that helped me were eating small snacks every 2 to 3 hours, getting up to walk or stretch for 2 minutes each hour, staying very hydrated, and letting myself rest the moment I got home. If you can, short naps, earlier bedtimes, and gentle movement really help. It truly does ease up for most people in the second trimester, even if it feels far away right now. You’re doing the best you can.
  • If you’re feeling really bizarrely tired and it doesn’t go away, get your iron levels checked! I have had a few friends who had abnormal levels of fatigue and it was fixed by getting on an iron supplement.
  • I am experiencing the same thing! Except my job is more on the physically demanding side and I just feel so physically exhausted and drained. But when I do walk around I notice it gives me a burst of energy, small snacks with lots of fiber help too. But I’m just trying to power through it’s so hard some times in the day I just get waves of exhaustion.
