Symtpoms

Re: Symtpoms

  • @emeraldcity603 same here, it's so different than I remember with my first. Definitely struggling with that symptom the most. Sending you hugs and hoping this passes us sooner rather than later. I started with heartburn too recently so I've got tums by my side a lot these past few days. Hoping you're able to manage with the kids starting school and getting them ready. Hang tight.

  • Anyone still experiencing cramps? I woke up crampy (nothing terrible) but it’s making me anxious.
  • @fifilala516 I do every now and then. One evening it was bad enough I decided to go lay down and drink some water.

My nausea and fatigue is lifting some. I’m guessing I’ll get a few days reprieve before it starts again. It was so bad I just put the TV on for the kids and laid on the couch all day.
  • @fifilala516 sometimes I cramp very briefly. I've even had one or two lightening quick pains directly in my pubic bone/vagina. A lot of things are stretching and loosening because of relaxin so I've accepted a lot of weird aches are just normal. I think as long as it isnt intense, accompanied by bleeding or other symptoms, and passes, its fine. I've heard it can get worse in second trimester as your round ligaments stretch more. Chat with your doctor when you see them next, but try not to worry too much.
  • @fifilala516 definitely have the random few cramps, probably not every day but most. They're pretty light though so I try to roll with it. First tri cramps aren't a symptom I've ever experienced before, so I'm doing my best not to compare. This pregnancy has been really different in a lot of ways!

I’ve been dealing with a pretty intense headache for over 24 hours and wondering if anyone has any remedy tips? I’m desperate at this point, but don’t want to take Tylenol. I’ve been drinking water, tried taking magnesium, ginger chews, ginger tea, sleeping, eating but can’t get it to go away. I slept with a cold washcloth on my face all night.
  • Is there a reason you don't want Tylenol? It's perfectly safe for pregnancy, and my doc recommends two extra strength Tylenol as soon as a headache starts to keep it from progressing. Do you have a medical condition that keeps you from taking it? I'm only surviving the headaches with Tylenol, so I'd definitely consult your doctor for an alternative if hydration isn't helping.
  • @hilaryandbaby1 oh no! I normally avoid Tylenol during pregnancy too, but at this point where you're going on more than 24 hrs and have tried so many other things, I personally would cave and take it. All the studies that have concerning implications for Tylenol in pregnancy are more for taking it frequently and not sparingly. I hope you get some relief!
  • @thescarletmom - which studies are you referring to about frequency of use and implications for pregnancy? I'm not aware of any current research showing negative effects of taking an approved daily dose of tylenol when pregnant, and I have nerve damage, so I've looked into it. If I missed something, I definitely need to know, but the only recent thing I found was a disproven connection between ADHD and Tylenol that didn't hold up to study with a larger sample size and controls for maternal genetics. Some of that talk unfortunately tends to linger even after its disproven because it takes time for word to travel, and once people get scared of something, that can stick. I think its totally okay to try and avoid medications altogether if it makes a person more comfortable, but I'd hate to see someone suffer unnecessarily because of an outdated or poorly designed study that makes them think a safe medication might hurt their baby. We already have to deal with so much while pregnant. We deserve tylenol. 😆
  • @danglangcat89 I'm not sure what studies specifically, but I'm taking my midwife's word on it. My children also have genetic risk for kidney disease so while pregnant i don't take anything not necessary to not burden their kidneys per our genetic counselor!

So I ended up talking to my IVF doctor and he said it was due to dehydration. I shared I’ve been drinking lots of water, but he said it was my body’s way of saying I need more. I ended up just drinking endless amounts of water yesterday, haha and it went 100% away! I decided to stay away from Tylenol because of the study around its link to autism and ADHD, and although it wasn’t proven it’s enough for me to want to stay away. I was also talking to a nurse today at the midwife clinic and she gave me the list of medicines that are safe and mentioned Tylenol. I just shared I wasn’t planning on taking due to its unknown effects and she says “smart”. I thought that was interesting! I also have a friend who had a child young and she took Tylenol as recommended and her child is autistic. She didn’t have any genetic history in her family, so she truly feels it was the cause unfortunately. I’m sure it’s fine to take sparingly, just trying my best to avoid it.

After all this Tylenol talk, what are everyone's thoughts/research/recommendations from providers on unisom?

Also, is anyone already having to lay on their side because they feel short of breath or like it's harder to breathe?
  • @blossomingmama back in 2019 when I was pregnant with my second, my midwife told me to take unisom+b6 because it was basically homemade Diclegis! Because my insurance wouldn't cover it and it was going to be like $300/mo or something crazy. While she did say something about the b6 would counteract the sleepy part of unisom, I never got the impression that unisom without b6 would be dangerous? I have had a prescription the last two pregnancies and haven't had to use unisom+b6, but i haven't heard anything about that recommendation now being thought to be unsafe. My personal flaw is I am pretty skittish of medications during pregnancy unless it's life and death, so I don't do a super great job of keeping up with those guidelines. But my risk assessment and yours might be totally different, and it's up to you and the reliable information you have!

And 1000% yes. I feel winded doing nothing these days 😂
  • Just to play devil’s advocate, with one of my pregnancies I was in so much pain that I could barely walk. It was due to being on bedrest for a total of 30 weeks 15 with my previous pregnancy that ended in miscarriage and then I had the same complications with the next pregnancy so I was on bedrest again. By the time my belly got big my hip muscles had atrophied enough they couldn’t maintain proper alignment. I took an insane amount of Tylenol because I needed to be able to take care of my other kids. I couldn’t move around my house well without it. I’m talking barely shuffling my feet and it was an 8/10 on the pain scale. That baby is 5 now and he isn’t autistic or ADHD. I’m ADHD so my kids get that from me anyways but he is perfectly fine. I took that Tylenol prior to this study coming out because it was right after I stopped taking it I heard about it. I was worried but he is absolutely fine.

Something I’m not allowed to take is Zofran. It increases your chances of the baby having a heart defect. Two of our boys have congenital heart defects. It also increases the chances of cleft palate (this all came from my OB office a few years back) which runs in my family. My oldest has a bifurcated uvula which is the mildest case of cleft palate.

I haven’t heard of anything related to unisome. I don’t take it because I don’t like things that make me drowsy. I can’t function after taking things like that. I have 6 kids still living at home that need to be able to care for. I know B6 isn’t suppose to be taken if you’re breastfeeding. I’m not sure why I have just been denied the go ahead of taking that due to always breastfeeding my toddler in the first trimester.

@thescarletmom @emeraldcity603 thanks for the input and previous experience sharing. I can totally understand both perspectives. We all definitely have different things to consider. Bed rest that long must of been so difficult especially with all the pain @emeraldcity603. It is good to be weary of medications in general especially when pregnant @thescarletmom, so I can completely understand the hesitancy. I mostly take it at night only to help with nausea and to get me to sleep decently with waking up to multiple bathroom trips and a waking toddler. The last few nights I haven't needed it. The n/v (nausea/vomiting) is daily at this point and it's kind of alarming. I read up on several articles tonight and I'm going to make a few changes more hydration, smoothies, and certain vegetables in hopes to see some positive changes in this front. The fatigue, and breast tenderness has definitely changed but hello back pain, n/v, and heightened sense of smell! I'm feeling it all this go around. Thank you for the information on B6 I had no idea about this, just got prescribed it and I am still BF my toddler but on the verge of weaning since production is going down and it's probably the right time. My OB never mentioned it, wild the information one doc will give and another maybe forgets or doesn't know. Thanks again.
  • My "morning sickness" has become evening sickness the last week or two. I have a sensitive stomach generally, so the mild nausea I have all day usually fades into the background.... until like 6-7pm the last few weeks. All of a sudden I'll be hit with the worst nausea ever and will puke the rest of the night. I've had to go to bed super early because if I'm awake, I'm vomiting. But I have appreciated being able to predict it/have the worst of it relegated to the evenings (though my poor DH has had to do a lot of solo bedtimes with our 3 kids). The suburb I grew up in/we live next door to now is having their annual town carnival this weekend that we always go to, and we walked (well, DH and 2 bigs walked, me and 2yo rode in the trailer) in the parade this morning with our kids' martial arts gym! I feel grateful that I have been able to hang more because nothing makes me feel more guilty than when a new pregnancy makes me a lame mom for a while. We walked around the vendor tents and let the kids play at the playground after the parade, but came home for 2yo nap and to cool off and will head back out there later for rides, games, and funnel cake. Wish me luck!!
  • @thescarletmom that sounds like such a fun time! Hoping it goes well for you and your symptoms give you a break!
  • @thescarletmom ugh this is me also. It hits me at night pretty badly, but really all the time if I'm not putting something in my stomach every hour no matter how small food or drink. I have been going to bed early also because of this. A few nights I've woken up just to make the trip to vomit, I completely understand this sucks. So glad you were able to get out with the family and enjoy your local carnival. We have one coming up too the 30/31st (this weekend), it's the first time they've had it at this location so I'm excited to bring my little and experience something new. Kind of glad I'm exiting the first trimester on those exact days. Hang in there, and hope the n/v lets up. 🫶It is relentless for those who actually have the awesome liberty to experience it lol. 😆
  • @blossomingmama same, big time! I have to eat all day long or it takes over, but at night nothing saves me. Yet I feel SO hungry! Starved. But I puke regardless, and also have woken up just to vomit. It's terrible! But I survived the carnival, I'll cross all my fingers and toes for you that it goes well this weekend! I started to feel wonky when the evening came, but the perk of being pregnant in the first place is that DH was the designated ride parent anyways haha.
  • My urine came back positive for Strep B today. I’ve never dealt with this before, has anyone else? Basically most of my urine came back abnormal showing maybe a UTI, but then the other labs came back today saying strep b positive. Google of course says me and baby will both need antibiotics. But I’m wondering if it’s just from urinating soooo much because I’m SO thirsty and I won’t need medicine later on?
  • @robinj716 I was GBS positive with my first - is this the same thing? If it is they just gave me antibiotics in my IV during labor. My urinalysis came back abnormal as well this time but I brought the sample with me as I have bad pee anxiety (don’t ask), and I think it just wasn’t a “clean” catch.
  • @fifilala516 hmm I’m wondering. It says “beta hemolytic strep b”. I had such a hard time peeing in the cup on Friday and I was thinking my samples are abnormal because of no “clean catch”. I thought to myself well that was hard and I don’t even have a huge belly yet. They’ve got to find a better way to collect urine!!!!
  • @robinj716 so MOST people are GBS+ at differing points throughout their life. Like, the reality is that everybody is colonized with GBS in their digestive system, its just not always present in the vagina, which has implications for delivery. They'll probably test you again closer to delivery, because being GBS+ now doesn't mean you will be in 6 months, even if you do nothing. IV antibiotics is the common course of treatment in the hospital for GBS+ but I know there are also other options you can talk to your provider about if you want. I've never heard of being tested for GBS so early though!
  • @thescarletmom  I know! I always remember these swabs near the end. It was just my urine test so maybe it’s something different or maybe they just run tons of urine samples 😆
  • @thescarletmom aw thank you, I'll take all the good vibes I can get! Last night was vomiting all dinner, plus the water I attempted to drink before bed. Ended up going to be hungry and so thirsty it was awful. Woke up in the middle of the night to drink water and immediately pass back out, and seemed to work for last night to stay hydrated a bit. It's crazy how bad it gets between 6-7 pm. Having a helpful husband is definitely a plus! I only have one other child so he was asleep and hubs feels so helpless when I'm like this but definitely brings me anything I need in the moment which is still a big help. I'm going to be scoping out all the food vendors this weekend 😂some of these lines are wild, so I'll definitely be bringing some drinks and snacks. The weather here is crazy 85-90.
  • @blossomingmama it's still in the upper 80s here too and *humid* but we got lucky and had a really nice day last weekend with a high of 82, which felt amazing. I'll cross my fingers that the weather plays nicely for you!
  • I need the nausea to go away. I already feel like my energy is coming back some. I just have this nagging queasiness just hanging out and it’s so old.
  • @emeraldcity603 I'm getting to the point where the nausea is just so annoying. At the beginning I wanted to cry sometimes I felt so bad, but now I'm just over it and irritated lol. I have developed pregnancy congestion again this go around and the post nasal drip making me gag is extremely annoying, especially when I'm also starting to feel some energy return. Heading in to the busy months and I don't want to deal anymore.
  • @thescarletmom I had a huge wave of nausea this morning and now I’m having another. Just in time for me to start preparing dinner. 😩
  • @emeraldcity603 noo! I hope you survived dinner, or phoned it in. I had a terrible wave of nausea earlier right after I finished eating lunch and had about a two second warning before barfing right in my office. And had to pause in the middle of typing this to go puke lol. My watch flipped out because my HR jumped from 82 to 130 during. Suuuuper over it.
  • My nausea was subsiding for a bid then came back full force a few days ago! Like slow, intentional breathing to keep myself from throwing up. The only thing I’ve noticed that really helps it are pickles. I’ve been eating 1-4 pickle wedges a day. Anyone else have weird tricks like that to help the nausea?
  • I felt like my nausea was starting to lessen and now I have been knocked out for the count due to some bad heartburn that made cough/gag/dry heave and trigger post-nasal drip that did more of the same. Hubby took over bedtime for our toddler which is amazing but I hate being down for the count. I love the bedtime snuggles. Our kiddo is so active some days they are the only snuggles I get with him.

@curlysue216 I have not noticed a magic food for me (personally, I dislike pickles and this pregnancy does NOT have me reaching for them :) ) I’m glad it works for you!
  • @midnightatsunset UGH the heartburn/acid reflux, I swear. I think my nausea wouldn't be half as bad if my acid reflux didn't flare super badly every pregnancy, omeprazole be damned. The post-nasal drip added in and it's the recipe for the most sour stomach possible.

I also don't have a magic cure food, but definitely stay stocked on pickles! I love pickles but don't usually reach for them as a stand alone snack.
  • Yesterday I was so dizzy and lightheaded all day, it really ruined the day for me. I couldn't sit up or stand for more than 5-10 minutes without starting to get that weird warm tingly feeling from being lightheaded. I assumed my blood sugar was low (I'm generally hypoglycemic) so I was trying to eat but it didn't really help. Lo and behold, 13 wk bumpdate this morning says it's a progesterone surge this week that's going to have me feeling lightheaded 🫠 womp. I hate feeling like I can't get anything done.
  • @thescarletmom how awful! Hopefully it passes soon and you feel better
  • My stomach has been so queasy lately. I think maybe I waited too long to eat when I woke up yesterday. Then I felt so nauseous, forced myself to eat. Then felt sick and literally laid around on the couch all day. I couldn’t stop burping either. It was burp after burp all day. I ended up taking some tums and then went to bed eventually. I’ve noticed twice this has happened on the weekends versus the week when I’m at work. When at work I eat something as soon as I get there, but weekends I tend to lay in bed for a while before actually getting up.

@thescarletmom This morning I showered and was getting ready and got this sudden hot dizzy feeling. I had to sit down on the bed in front of the fan. Was thinking maybe I need to keep some snacks or crackers by my bed for first thing wake up. I feel worse at 12 weeks than I did at 6!
  • The food aversions still have me not wanting certain things. Even things that sounded good when I started eating them. The fatigue is what’s taking me out.
  • @emeraldcity603 the food aversions are wild to me. I’ll crave and eat something and then never want it again. Or some days everything just sounds gross to me. There might be one or two things I get stuck on for a few days and then I’m back to being sick or everything. With DS2 I had a meat aversion, but that was about it. Seems like everyday I’m wanting something new and then it’s a one and done 😆
  • @emeraldcity603 the exhaustion sucks. I cooked two dinners for my friend who just had a baby yesterday, took 45 minutes, and afterwards I had to lay down for like an hour because I was so wiped. It was outrageous.

@robinj716 I have *mostly* stopped being queasy until it's getting close to time for me to take my anti-nausea meds, but the last 12 hours I've puked 3 times out of nowhere. Totally fine, going about my business, then have 3 seconds to find a bathroom or trash can before I randomly barf. HATE it! Definitely notice that the nausea picks up if I wait too long to eat in the am or afternoon though.
