Upcoming Appointments: 6/13 - 12 week and NIPT

How are you feeling? Itchy but okay. Still really tired and a little more RLP/achy. But so much better than I was with the other 2.

Rants/Raves: I’m still sick but it’s slowly getting better. Of course now I have over half my body in a constant state of itch. I’m really hoping I don’t have shingles like with my first, thats it’s own brand of hell.

    Questions: nope

GTKY: What is your favorite holiday to celebrate, and why? Hmmm. We are not all religious, so maybe St. Patty’s. Good food but without a ton of pomp and circumstance. I like Thanksgiving but it’s always so much work. I hate Valentine’s Day. Pretty indifferent to Easter. 4th of July used to fun but not feeling very happy about America’s these days. Also I’m now old and annoyed at people doing illegal fireworks till 3am. I loved Halloween till I had kids and realized that the whole candy from strangers aspect makes me nervous.

DH and I have a system for certain holidays. I am the execution and he is the enthusiasm. I really don’t like Christmas but I try not to let that influence the kids and instead funnel it into being efficient with presents needed, making sure we have the necessary supplies/materials, setting out the stuff for them to decorate. He gets to work magic and wonder.

@thatbaintforbetty LOVE the idea of an execution/enthusiasm division of labor (said as somebody often tasked with being both). Reminds me of my wedding, which I planned 99% of, and how I realized day of that (1) I enjoy planning and executing big events and (2) I enjoyed being a bride, but (3) I found it very difficult to both ensure the details of the day went well AND be the peppy, carefree bride I felt was expected of me!

Upcoming Appointments: new patient visit with OB tomorrow Wed 5/28

How are you feeling? Feeling a little blegh these days. I’m in an awful cycle where I feel queasy in the morning/afternoon but feel better when I eat, so I’m eating all day long, and then suddenly in the evening I feel so bloated and uncomfortable because, well, I was eating all day long 😒

Rants/Raves: We got SO much rain this weekend. (It’s a good thing, Colorado is one of those places where you’re constantly saying “well we really do need the moisture” even as you’re kind of furious your holiday barbecue plans have been washed out.)

    Questions:

GTKY: What is your favorite holiday to celebrate, and why? Probably Thanksgiving, both for the food and for the focus on gratitude and being thankful for all that we have. It’s also one of the two holidays each year where we reliably get together with extended family, who we don’t see enough of, so that’s a perk, too.

    Team Finding Out/Blue/Pink/Green: Finding out!

Upcoming Appointments: June 9th - blood work (prenatal testing)

How are you feeling? I feel great. I’ve been very fortunate with minimal symptoms. At this point I just am dealing with constant trips to the bathroom, and occasional fatigue. I’ve never been a nap girl, but I am now. Not having symptoms worries me after two miscarriages, but just need to stay positive.

Rants/Raves: I feel bad that I just keep saying give me all the pregnancy symptoms. lol I see some moms talk about how miserable they are during pregnancy, but if every pregnancy was like this one so for I would say sign me up again!

Questions: For all the over weight moms out there with previous pregnancies. How much did you gain in the first trimester ? I started my pregnancy at 5’4’ 178 pounds. I think that puts me at a BMI of 29. So yes - overweight. I was on a weight loss journey before hand. And I’ve already gained 7 pounds. I’m worried that is too much….? I don’t know if it’s because I went from being healthy to NOT or what.

GTKY: What is your favorite holiday to celebrate, and why? Thanksgiving and Christmas. I wrap them up into one. I just love the fall smells of thanksgiving leading in the Christmas tree smell of Christmas. I LOVE decorating for Christmas, I love baking for Christmas. And best of all ladies. This year we will be bringing a little one into the month to make Christmas extra special!!!!
  • @aisleofviewtwo we did the entirety of engagement to wedding in like 2 months. Mostly by ourselves because it was fairly small and no one had availability. It was insane. I don’t know if it was better to only have to deal with wedding stuff for such a short (but crazy) time or if it would have been nice to be able to take time but have it lingering over us.

@Melissa112009 this pregnancy has been very mild on symptoms compared to my last 2. If it weren’t for the diabetes complications (and my age)  I would easily have more if it was like this again. I did break down the other night trying to give myself my dinner shot. I just wanted to sit down and eat and I kept hitting a nerve and having to find a new spot. Also I am 5’4 and was about 180 pre-pregnancy. I have been given a goal of 15 total pounds gained with most of that being in third tri. But thats also due to the diabetes. I think normal expected weight gain is like 25 to 30? Overweight or not, you still have to “grow” several pounds of baby, placenta, fluid and extra blood. Some people are super overly heathy the whole pregnancy and still end up gaining 50 pounds, every body will be different and that gain will be different. Strive for heathy moderation but don’t beat yourself up if you don’t always hit it. Pregnancy is rough in many ways, emotional and physical and 1st tri is all about survival.

  • We are definitely an execution/enthusiasm team over here too—such a perfect description.  My husband loves holidays and any special occasion and it’s been a sensitive task to figure out how to give him what he is hoping for and say no to extras (that all end up falling to me).  Cause we could be extra 🤪

You know when we say “somehow it’ll get done”…hi, it’s me, I’m Somehow.  I have a feeling I’m not alone lol.

    FTM/STM/TTM+/it's complicated: 3rd

    Team Finding Out/Blue/Pink/Green: Finding out!

Upcoming Appointments: 16w appointment was today, 20w appt in a month plus anatomy scan hopefully earlier than what they scheduled me for at almost 25w.  The midwife today said that’s super late and she wants my A/S closer to 20w.

How are you feeling?  Just random days/moments of feeling SO exhausted.  My poor 7yo…I fell asleep on the couch the second she finished reading her last reading selection for her homeschool year yesterday.

Rants/Raves:  Y’all I forgot how amazing this recommendation has been this pregnancy after getting the worst yeast infection of my life last month…but Vulva Balm (I got it from Amazon) has been saving me when things get a tad itchy down there.

    Questions:

GTKY: What is your favorite holiday to celebrate, and why?  I love all the fall holidays through Christmas, in huge part because my husband LOVES the fall holidays.  I’ve gotten way simpler in how we celebrate/what we prepare and that’s definitely going to continue this year.  We are planning to take November and December off of school and all the things and just praying for slow, baby-snuggling, nap and read on the couch by the Christmas tree, kind of weeks.

How are you feeling? Exhausted and unmotivated but feeling hopeful that I’m almost done with the worst of the 1st tri!

Rants/Raves:  I willing COOKED and ATE eggs today!!!!!!!!!! There is a light at the end of this hell tunnel! I’m still having bad days where all I can stomach is skittles and Doritos but I’ve had a couple good days this last week!

    Questions:

GTKY: What is your favorite holiday to celebrate, and why? It used to be the 4th of July because of the traditions we had with our friends, but we’ve since moved and our friend group has imploded :( So I’d say the Thanksgiving season.
  • @virginiaham I have a question for you (and any other 3rd time plus mommas)!

When did you start to feel movement? Was it even earlier this time? Or with subsequent pregnancies?

My fist was an anterior placenta and it took forever. The second was much closer to like 14 or 15 weeks If I remember right.

I was laying in bed this morning and was kinda just waking up and very still. Swear I had the tiniest weird bubbling sensation way lower than my stomach. I know that it’s way too early and gas/digestion but it got me thinking of do you feel movement earlier each time? Obviously I feel like there is some cut off of size/age that would be the minimum.

(I’m trying to distract my brain,🤪 I have an emergency appointment later to see if my insane all over itching is shingles. Which is bad while pregnant and really just a freaking nightmare.)

  • @thatbaintforbetty I think it was around 17-18weeks with the first, and only when I was sitting by up specifically when driving that I would feel the flutters.  With the second I thiiiink around the same.  I was told I have an anterior placenta with this one so preparing myself to wait even longer to feel anything consistent, but maybe not because I always felt the flutters way internally if that makes sense.  I swear I can feel flutters every once in awhile already but I think the gas bubbles moving through my intestines are stronger than baby at this point 🙈

I hope you can get some answers at your appointment! FX for something easily treatable and that you can catch a break quickly.

How are you feeling? Less nauseous day by day. But still absolutely exhausted. As soon as my eyes open in the morning, I'm awake for the day and can't fall back asleep. This usually happens around 4am. Which is fantastic with a toddler who has been refusing to nap lately. 🫠
Rants/Raves: What exactly is the point of having a shared Google calendar if your husband doesn't check it or the notifications on it for his own appointments?! 😡 I even called to remind him of it and he was already too far away from his appointment and I made him reschedule it himself. So annoyed right now.
Questions: How accurate are these NIPT tests? 👀 💙🩷💙🩷⁉️
GTKY: What is your favorite holiday to celebrate, and why? I love the nostalgic feeling I get at Thanksgiving and Christmas. I really love Christmas. Lately it has been chaotic, and I'm sure this year it'll be more chaos, but I'm planning ahead and already getting and wrapping gifts so I don't have to worry about it while I'm giving birth lol

As for the enthusiasm and execution team... I'm definitely the execution part, and mostly the enthusiasm. It's exhausting to think about.
  • @bridgiebee82 yes! I’m already trying to figure out presents and stuff for Christmas. It was one of the things I told DH early on, that we would have to plan way ahead since I definitely am going to out of commission for it.

Also 13 weeks seems much more probable than almost 10. (Also I had to look up how far along I was cause I didn’t remember, lol)

@virginiaham thankfully doc doesn’t think shingles, she took pictures and swabs to run for extra confirmation. Got an unexpected ultrasound though and now the cats out the bag to the kiddos since I took the younger one with me. (She had my phone/airpods and wasn’t interested in what was being said but got curious when she did the ultrasound) Fingers crossed that I can get them to stay quiet for the last 2 days of school.🤞

  • First appointment with our OB went smoothly yesterday. The good news is that I really love her! She was so kind and friendly, and even snuck in a quick off-the-record ultrasound so we could see our gummy bear and hear the heartbeat (still measuring right on track at 10 weeks). It's a practice of about a dozen doctors and they encourage scheduling appointments with all of them so that whoever is on call when you deliver at least you have some rapport established, which I think is really cool. Though that also means who knows when we'll see her, our "primary", again!

The bad news is that they're pretty adamant that IVF pregnancies not go past the due date, so they'll plan for an induction at 39 weeks and change. (FWIW this was disappointing to hear but the explanations make sense; basically a trend they see in IVF pregnancies is that the placenta doesn't always perform as well as it should late in pregnancy and/or baby doesn't always get all the nutrients they should. So 39 weeks is waiting long enough to lower likelihood of c-section, but not waiting so long that we risk baby's health.) I really don't want to be induced if it can be avoided, so I guess I'll just plan to spend most of December eating dates, curb walking, doing acupuncture, etc.—whatever I can do to evict this little one on my own :D
  • @thatbaintforbetty Oof, glad to hear it's (probably) not shingles, but sorry you're still looking for answers! Hope you find yourself less itchy soon. In retrospect I think you were wise to just crank out wedding prep in a few months; in my experience more time to plan doesn't really = better, it just means more time to stress.

@virginiaham That does seem super late for the anatomy scan, FX they can get you moved up. My OB is planning to have me do the anatomy scan with MFM right at 20 weeks so they can do an extra thorough review of the placenta (unexpected joys of IVF...) but they're also sending us to a different office location where they expect we'll be able to get scheduled faster. Ours is part of a university system with really good interoffice communication so may not be an option for you, just throwing it out there in case.

@bridgiebee82 @thatbaintforbetty @virginiaham My own special brand of delulu is that ever since the RE told me the embryo was really camped out on my right hand side, I swear I can feel its heartbeat when I place my hand on my abdomen there. I am fully aware that this is anatomically impossible, but somehow it brings me comfort to "feel" it anyway.

@brookejay06 Yay for the return of eggs! I can't imagine an aversion, they're one of my favorite foods, especially for breakfast. FX you continue to see steady improvement of symptoms!

@Melissa112009 Symptoms feel like a thing where everybody ends up with a little FOMO: those with super strong symptoms just want relief, those without a lot of symptoms just want reassurance everything is ok. It's hard when a "normal" pregnancy can look so many ways!

Upcoming Appointments: June 23: 16-week OB check-in; July 16: anatomy scan

How are you feeling? Okay! Tired and unfocused, mainly, but that beats nauseous and dizzy any day of the week. I'm so glad to be moving out of the first tri next week.

Rants/Raves: Last week I had my NT scan on Wednesday and my regular 12-week OB checkup on Friday. On Wednesday everything looked great and the baby was moving like crazy. Then on Friday my OB couldn't find the heartbeat. She said that's pretty typical for being this early and told me not to worry, especially since we'd just seen the baby like 48 hours ago, and at the time I wasn't nervous because like she said, we had just seen the baby moving around on the ultrasound two days before. But now, as more time passes, I'm getting more worried. Why couldn't we hear the heartbeat? UGH. I wish I could skip to the part where I can feel the baby move so I know he's still okay in there.

    Questions: None right now.

GTKY: What is your favorite holiday to celebrate, and why? I'm one of those people who is SUPER into Christmas and looooooves the whole lead-up to the holiday. I love buying gifts and eating good food and I'm a sucker for a Christmas carol. I also really enjoy winter up here in Wisconsin so it's the perfect time of year for me!
  • @aisleofviewtwo I would take my induction labor over my spontaneous labor every day of the week and twice on Sunday. And I will be induced by 39 weeks also, because of the diabetes/AMA.

Induction can be tougher but it isn’t always.

  • @thatbaintforbetty That's really great to hear, thanks for sharing! I know there's no wrong way to get baby into our arms. I think I'm just wallowing a bit because (though I'm incredibly grateful for IVF giving us a path to parenthood) it feels like I've had to let go of so many of my preconceived notions for how conception, pregnancy, and now birth will go.
  • @aisleofviewtwo I’m not sure about your facility, but after my water broke and labor stalled, I avoided a medication induction by using the hospital breast pump protocol to induce labor.  As it gets closer definitely ask about their induction practices.  It’s 100% ok to feel how you feel about things not going as you had imagined/hoped even as you just want baby to get here safely.

@philosophyw I’m sorry they couldn’t find the heartbeat at your appointment!  It is definitely common (former antepartum nurse), the Doppler is like finding a grain of rice with a narrow flashlight beam especially 1st trimester. Sometimes baby moves in a tricky spot, sometimes your intestines are too active/loud to be able to pick up on the heartbeat, sometimes they move the Doppler around too quickly.  Unfortunately we as mamas can’t help but worry even if it is common.   Do you happen to have a Doppler at home?  Some offices will even do a quick Doppler heartbeat appointment, if you’re feeling really unsettled.  I hope you can hear baby soon!

  • @aisleofviewtwo I feel you. I definitely had to let go of my unmedicated water birth plan early on in my motherhood journey when I learned I was high risk and would most likely be for each one.

@philosophyw I’m sorry, thats so frustrating and I can’t imagine the anxiety. I do know that finding a heartbeat with a Doppler can be tricky, I had one and sometimes it took a good while to narrow down where the baby was or for them to stay still long enough to get a reading. While I don’t agree with letting you go without finding, it I can imagine that they probably had a time limit and if you had verified a healthy baby that recently being fine without confirming it at that point.
