Hope everyone is having a good midpoint and the anatomy scans have gone well.
We opted to be surprised for the gender of our little one, but of course, we talk about the baby a lot! I was never too crazy about nicknames like bean, nugget, etc, especially once the baby got older. But because we don't know gender we can't say she or he to easily refer to them (the *singular* baby). So, I tend to say they or them a lot. Like, dad got to feel them kick for the first time yesterday! Or they're growing like a weed!
They sucked their thumb during the ultrasound, as opposed to, the baby sucked the baby's thumb...
It seems normal to me (I was an English major and studied four languages in university, decades ago) to speak like this, but often times people are confused. They know I'm only carrying one baby but it trips them up. My mom thinks I'm purposefully giving the baby *they/them* pronouns, given the current climate and hysteria over Pride, etc.
I just don't know how else to refer to an unknown gender and feel like it's impersonal if I always say "the baby" or refer to them as "it".
Is anyone else waiting to find out, and what do you call your sweet bundle of joy? (or what did you call them before you knew?)
Thanks so much I know that was long, hopefully it made sense 😝
Re: What do you call your green baby?
“They/them” seems like the natural way to refer to anyone you don’t know the sex/gender of, including an unborn baby. Your mom seems weirdly paranoid. If she’s uncomfortable with “they/them” pronouns she can just say “baby”, alternatively maybe try living in the 21st century/remove that minor stick from her ass.

No one has said anything to us about using they/them and they also refer to baby the same.
