What do you call your green baby?

Hope everyone is having a good midpoint and the anatomy scans have gone well.

We opted to be surprised for the gender of our little one, but of course, we talk about the baby a lot! I was never too crazy about nicknames like bean, nugget, etc, especially once the baby got older. But because we don't know gender we can't say she or he to easily refer to them (the *singular* baby). So, I tend to say they or them a lot. Like, dad got to feel them kick for the first time yesterday! Or they're growing like a weed!
They sucked their thumb during the ultrasound, as opposed to, the baby sucked the baby's thumb...

It seems normal to me (I was an English major and studied four languages in university, decades ago) to speak like this, but often times people are confused. They know I'm only carrying one baby but it trips them up. My mom thinks I'm purposefully giving the baby *they/them* pronouns, given the current climate and hysteria over Pride, etc.

I just don't know how else to refer to an unknown gender and feel like it's impersonal if I always say "the baby" or refer to them as "it".

Is anyone else waiting to find out, and what do you call your sweet bundle of joy? (or what did you call them before you knew?)

Thanks so much I know that was long, hopefully it made sense 😝

I do know the sex but before I did, we said “they/them”. Definitely would be weirder to say “it”  :D

“They/them” seems like the natural way to refer to anyone you don’t know the sex/gender of, including an unborn baby. Your mom seems weirdly paranoid. If she’s uncomfortable with “they/them” pronouns she can just say “baby”, alternatively maybe try living in the 21st century/remove that minor stick from her ass.

  • 😝 Thanks for the validation. It was a few people who thought it was odd, so I thought I was going crazy.
  • We also found out the gender but we're keeping it to ourselves for the time being. We have been saying they/them and just "baby" so... oooo baby is kicking like crazy right now. We have almost slipped up by saying "he/she" in the presence so I make a point to use the opposite one again shortly after to confuse them. lol.
No one has said anything to us about using they/them and they also refer to baby the same.
  • With my first two I said they/them a lot and a few people thought I was having twins. This baby is called baby a lot but I think that's more because that a lot clearer yo my other kids. They all had pet names too. First was 'Wiggler', second 'Squiggler' and this one is 'Jiggler'. 😅
  • Omg, that is so cute. I feel like mine is a squiggler for sure 😝
  • We also don’t know gender yet and I use some of everything. They/them (singular), baby, bean, Cletus the fetus, and lately “little fishy” because I feel them swimming around in there so much.
  • CLETUS THE FETUS!!
    I'M DYING  :D
  • Our last name is kelly, we always find out the gender but the last couple babies have been called "Kellybean" until we got the results lol

Same here. I used to call 'they/them' prior to knowing the gender. Yes, there were people commenting why should I call my baby 'they or them'. Well it was my choice, not theirs.
  • Ha, call the babes anything you want.  When my SIL kept to her and bro, I used to use a lot of food or animals names… lion, cinna bun, frogger, pup, cobra, noodle
