Lidocaine @ Dental Apt

I unknowingly received topical Lidocaine at the dentist yesterday at my normal check up. I advised them I was newly pregnant prior to the appointment and without consent, used topical lidocaine during my cleaning. They used a new tool and process which is why I had no clue - I assumed it was the paste they normally use. I am 5-6 weeks pregnant. The dentist advised it is safe but when researching it is considered a category B - it does pass through the placenta. Suggested use is IF necessary, wait to second trimester. Does anyone have experience receiving lidocaine in the early weeks of the first trimester and if so, did you have any issues or defects?

    I already answered you on the first tri board but I’ll add that I take a catergory C drug every day and my midwife says it’s perfectly safe 🤷🏻‍♀️

    @eaugustyn89 I haven’t used lidocaine in first trimester, BUT I will say that I just went to the dentist a couple days ago for them to look at something happening on my gum, they told me it’s a pyogenic granuloma that is directly related to pregnancy hormones and they get like one case per year. They said I have a mild case but if it were to become larger we would need to get it removed and they would use lidocaine which she declared “totally safe for pregnancy”. I didn’t think anything of it until I read what you said. I guess maybe what could be gleaned is that it seems to be the general consensus among dentists to think it’s safe for pregnancy? I still think they should have asked for your consent or informed you what they were doing prior to using it.

    I went to the dentist and used topical lidocaine at 7 weeks. My dentist said it was safe so I trusted him. Hoping for the best!

    Hello! I am currently 7w4d. At 5w2d, I had to go to the dentist to replace a crown and fill a small cavity. They used both topical and injected anesthetic. I let them know I was very very early in pregnancy and my dentist said it was perfectly safe. My dentist is my age (38) and about to start trying for a baby herself and said she would feel safe having the procedure if it were her. I have since gone to my OBGYN and baby was measuring appropriately and has a heartbeat. Hope this eases your mind a little!
