OB or Midwife?

This is baby #4 for me and all 3 previous pregnancies were at the same OB office and delivered in a hospital. I’ve always wanted an at home or birth center baby, so this being my probable final pregnancy, I would love to make that dream a reality.

It just feels so odd. I’ve lined up my midwife and my birth center already but they don’t typically see you until week 12. That seems late? Isn’t there scans that need to be done? Or am I over thinking this because I’ve never been in this setting? Do I need to see an OB too?

I need help knowing what’s correct here and what everyone is doing.

Re: OB or Midwife?

  • Hi! My first and second were hospital births with midwives, and my third was a homebirth. I have found this to be true in my experience: obs and hospitals assume something is going to go wrong. Midwives, specifically homebirth midiwives, assume everything is going to go right. If you dont have any concerning history or symptoms, you dont need to be seen before 12 weeks and you dont need any early scans. The only ultrasound you will get will probably be the 20 week anatomy scan. It is normal to not be seen until 12 weeks. If you want (and I always do) you can get an elective ultrasound and see baby and hear the heartbeat for peace of mind. But there isnt a medical reason to get a scan. Im so excited for you!!! My homebirth was the most amazing experience and I am very much looking forward to having another one. It is a different model of care. You will have a lot more choice as to what you want done. If you want all the common medical testing and scans, you can get them! If you want a medical early scan, just ask your midwife. Mine was willing to write me a script for one (especially because I think Im earlier than my LMP).

This is all great info!!! Thank you!! Due to some meds I was on she said I would be seeing mfm just to monitor size. She told me less is more with them but that they will happily put in a requisition for a 12 week scan if I want it :)
