1st Trimester

Meat aversion

Hi all!

I’m in my 7th week and have found that I can’t stomach most proteins. I used to eat 125g of protein a day, and now the thought of my usual scrambled eggs or a steak sounds disgusting, and don’t get me started on the smell of bacon :(

I’ve been doing smoothies in the mornings now, but find I’m just not full for very long. Has anyone had something similar? I’m thinking of adding a protein powder, but am a bit worried that will also be gross ha

Re: Meat aversion

  • I’ve had the same issue. I always ate around 125-140grams of protein daily and was big on an egg and meat breakfast. Lately just the smell of cooking beef makes me gag. I’ve resigned myself to granola and yogurt. I tried protein powder in my oatmeal, which I used to eat all the time, now nope I dumped that in the trash real quick. Hoping second trimester magically gets better!

  • You could try and unflavoured protein powder… I always find that they still have a bit of taste but not near as strong as vanilla or chocolate. I use Justwhey
  • im 11 weeks and 1 day pregnant and still can’t stomach an egg, sausage, bacon etc.
  • My meat aversion only lasted a few weeks. Once most of the nausea was gone I could eat meat again. Try to look for it in different sources, googling how vegans get their protein might help!

Thankfully there are multiple ways to get protein aside from meat. Legumes, tofu, peanut butter, etc. You can try unflavored protein powders as well.

I’ve found that my meat aversion is mostly related to the smell. So if I cook inside the house the smell permeates throughout and I can’t take it. My husband cooked meat outside one day and I gave it a try and was fine. So if the smell isn’t overwhelming, I can handle it.  It still isn’t my favorite though so I try to stomach as much as I can.
Then,  I also use collage powder, beans/lentils, and dairy protein sources to make sure I’m getting enough protein.
  • I also experienced this in pregnancy. It sucked because I love tacos. Eat whole foods and a lot of veggies. Just look at the protein amount in 1 slice of whole grain bread. There is 17g of protein in just 1 cup of edamame. Get it from real food.

  • I’m just over 8 weeks struggling with aversions too. To get protein I’ve been eating Greek Yogurt and cottage cheese, which I can surprisingly stomach! Lately I’ve also been snacking on peanuts. When I’m feeling decent (usually earlier in the morning) I’ll actually eat heavier foods like chicken soup!
  • This resonates so deeply with me!  I can't eat any meat whatsoever right now, and usually I love meat!  To echo one of the posters, Greek yogurt also is ok with me right now, so I've been putting that in smoothies with vanilla whey protein powder and frozen fruit--it's the most calories I can get down at a time.  If you get a good quality protein powder, there won't be any weird textures or flavors.  Good luck to all!
