1st Trimester

Anyone else eat deli meat occasionally?

Has anyone else eaten deli meat in their pregnancy so far? I keep reading mixed information about it and I’m not really sure what to think…and I’ve been craving it like crazy!

I had some salami from Starbucks the other day (one of those snack boxes with cheese and breadsticks) and now I’m feeling guilty, even though there are a looot of sources online saying it’s more than likely fine.

The last major listeria outbreak was on cantaloupe..

Re: Anyone else eat deli meat occasionally?

  • Yep, I eat deli meat, sushi, and anything else I fancy. I have done it the last 3 pregnancies. I hear more cases of listeria from bagged salads than lunch meat. 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • I eat it, I just microwave it until it’s steaming first which is supposed to kill any bacteria

Same. Plus one barely cooked fancy steak on vacation to Canada. 👌🏼 💋
  • I ate more Chicago hot dogs during my pregnancy than I had in the last 5-10 years 😂.

The likelihood of listeria is very very low.

A friend of a friend had nothing but Jimmy John's sandwiches her entire 1st trimester because it was the only food she could keep down. That kid is now 7. I had a sub sandwich when we had lunch provided at work for an event and it wasn't until 3 hours later that I realized I wasn't "supposed" to eat it. Whoops but oh well! My baby is perfectly healthy now. I was around 8 weeks at the time and nobody knew so it would be weird for me to refuse it.

  • I had Jimmy John’s yesterday! 🤣 My doctor also told me that if the meat is fresh shaved, like at Jersey Mike’s, that’s totally fine. (JJ’s isn’t fresh shaved, I don’t think, but I generally trust them to keep their meats safer than most delis.)
  • I think it is up to you. Personally, I avoid listeria risks because even though it is low, it would break me if it happened to be the one time that listeria was present and hurt my babies, but every mom has to make their own choices and assess the risk for themselves. I have read that lunchmeat is totally fine if it is heated first (however you like- oven, microwave, stove top are all good). I still wash all my veggies and chop them myself even, so I may be on the opposite extreme of over-caution. It’s really up to you.
  • I’m craving Turkey sandwiches like it’s no one’s business and I’m indulging. Last pregnancy i ate Bologna every day for like three months lol. My doc said “meh we’re in America you’ll be fine” 😂
