1st Trimester

Help! Very concerned!

Im 13 weeks pregnant and I unknowingly ate some unpasteurized feta cheese today from a restaurant. I confirmed with the kitchen that is was unpasteurized.

I know listeria is one concern, but now I’m reading that it can cause tuberculosis too? Which is very serious and can be fatal.

Has anyone else eaten unpasteurized cheese and lived to tell the tale? Freaking out over here!

Re: Help! Very concerned!

  • The chances of actually getting sick is minimal. Just don't do it again if you are that concerned.

  • Unless less you literally inhaled the cheese I don’t think you can get tuberculosis, which is a respiratory disease.

  • I ate all the things including sushi and drank some wine here and there but I waited until my second trimester for sushi and the cheeses, and wine not until my third. Just don't do it again if it makes you feel worried or uncomfortable.
People think we become mothers when we give birth but the truth is we become mothers the moment we start calling our babies to us in our thoughts, dreams and prayers. Some paths are short and some are so long that you can easily forget where you were headed.

  • Good to know. Unpasteurized cheeses?
  • The guidelines for what to eat are to help you avoid things that have caused problems, not to say it's a sure thing something will go wrong if you do (especially if you're being so careful generally). Hey, look at human history, and it's either horrifying or reassuring, how people ate/drank/breathed all kinds of things during pregnancy! Some cheese that was refrigerated and safe for eating, even if it wasnt pasteurized, is unlikely to do anything, and I am sure you will be
     fine. 🙂
  • I just posted this on a diff thread but I think it will help.
(Also - *Many* cultures rely on and reserve unpasteurized cheese and milk specifically *for* pregnant women).

"listeriosis affects 1,600 people per year in the United States"

1600 people - in a country of of 350 million ppl (that we know of) it affects (affects, not kills, not horribly maims) 1600 - so not just women either, we're talking - of everyone in the USA.

Thus your odds of getting this bacteria are is 1 in 218,750

Your odds of being struck by lightning in your lifetime are 1 in 15,300

    I hope that helps ^^
