Dawsyn

I really love Dawsyn as an option for my little girl. She is my third and my 2nd daughter Saige has a name often spelled Sage. I love the name Dawson for a girl but I feel like Dawsyn is a little more elegant! What do you think?

Re: Dawsyn

  • I really dislike the spelling. To me it says "trendy" not "elegant." If you are going with Dawson I would stick with the traditional spelling.

  • I agree, the y instead of a true vowel trend will be dated in a few years. And if it bothers you that people misspell your older daughter’s name then I would go with a common spelling or a different name.

  • Thanks for your opinions! I do agree that the y trend will soon be outdated but It didn’t bother me that Saiges name is often misspelled. it would bother me if people thought the new baby is a boy not a girl? I thought the spelling might make it a little more feminine??
  • Sorry, but everyone changing a vowel to a 'y' to "femininise' it is aweful.  Please spell it the way its supposed to Dawson.  If you are worried about people not knowing boy or girl, the maybe a different name.  But honestly, Dawson is not that terrible for a girl - IMO
  • Agreed. A unisex name is asking for people to constantly misgender your baby, which has never bothered me but if it will bother you then maybe chose a more feminine name. I agree Dawson is not the worst boy name for a girl I’ve heard but it is also kind of trendy right now, like the y.

  • While I agree that changing the o to a y would make me think "girl" rather than unknown gender, I would definitely not think "elegant". The first impressions I would get with that name would be female, White, and from a lower- or lower-middle income family. It's not a bad name at all, but keeping the original spelling will, I think, open it up to a wider interpretation of who the name belongs to, though that also includes gender. If you want people to know your child is a girl just by hearing her name, though, you'll want to go with a feminine name rather than a unisex name. You may still get some misgendering (I've heard people refer to Ezra or Billy with female pronouns, when those are traditionally masculine names, for example) unless you go very classic, like Mary or Elizabeth, but with a unisex name you'll definitely get misgendered sometimes.
  • If it bothers you that people might mistake Dawson for a boy, I'd go with a more feminine name. Dawsyn would more likely be interpreted as female in writing but there will still likely be many instance where the name is spoken rather than written and there is gender confusion.
  • Personally I think names that have vowels switched for “y” in names come across as trashy. I like gender neutral names, my name is Taylor. I’ve been assumed to be a man before, usually through emails. It doesn’t bother me. Dawson is more masculine than gender neutral, but not a bad name. The issue I have with the name for a girl is the ending -son. That usually means the name is derived from a surname indicating someone is the son of an important father. Not a big deal, but something to consider. Overall, if you like the name Dawson go for it, but please spell it properly for your daughter’s sake.
