Monthly sounds good! I'm full of questions today:

1) what are y'all doing for cushioning your hips during sleep? Like, all the pregnancy pillows are for belly/back support, but frig my hips hurt like mofo in the morning! HALP!
2) Dresser for nursery: how much should I care about toxic fumes, paint, etc. Should I really get a "nursery specific" dresser is no VOCs in paint, Greenguard certified, blah blah blah? Or can I just get an IKEA dresser?

1. nothing yet, but last time I just used an extra pillow! I don’t have any hip pain specifically though.
2. Literally not ever considered those things. All paint is safe as far as I’m concerned, as long as you don’t find an old leaded bucket from like 1960 or so lol. Both my son’s room and the nursery have ikea dressers. The most important safety aspect is to anchor them to the wall, but they’re fine.

@acleverusername same with the hip pain! Everything I see says add a pillow between legs but it isn’t helping me really. I’ve been trying to stretch more and do more yoga to help and small exercises on my medicine ball.

@acleverusername no help with the pillow/hip situation. As far as dresser, that's up to you and what you're comfortable with. IMO it's not really necessary to get a "nursery" specific dresser (seems like a money grab to me!). We bought a plain wood unfinished dresser, and then I painted it myself. I used milk paint but that's just what I chose to do 🤷‍♀️ was definitely cheaper than buying anything labelled specifically for nursery/kids room, and I was able to get exactly what I wanted that way

Edit: I cared a lot more about making sure the crib was Greenguard certified, no VOCS, etc bc babies will inevitably chew/bite on the wood of the crib.

Its finally Disney week! I am so stressed about packing and making sure that everyone stays healthy until then - we fly out Friday morning!! I pulled my 3 year old from preschool this week bc it seems she can't attend without bringing home a new bug each week. 6 is still in school, fingers crossed she stays healthy!! I will be so relieved once this trip is behind us. SO MUCH PLANNING and SO MUCH MONEY!!!

1. Definitely stretch those hip flexors, hamstrings, quads, and glutes! I started doing cat/cow and child pose before bed to release any tension in my lower back and hips and it helps SO much! And keep from being twisted (one leg bent) while laying down.
2. I think anything marketed for a nursery is just overpriced normal furniture. I don't worry about paint/stain once it's dry.

@MsBeachNJ I pray y’all stay healthy until your trip. I went to Disney with my nibblings for the first time in March and can definitely understand the expense. Best to do it once but do it right!

@acleverusername the biting is serious. And also, they’ll bite more than just the crib, my son bit the window sill a lot, who knows what kind of paint was used there!

You just have to choose your battles tbh, there are so many things out there that are potentially harmful and you can’t anticipate every little thing. Fumes from paint that has already dried and ingesting a tiny bit of wood chips occasionally for a brief period of time are pretty low on my list of things to worry about.

I've been looking into the sleeping situation and I never even considered to check the materials and safety of other furniture!

I'm a FTM and was wondering if you have any tips on getting the registry started? I feel like each little thing I look into I get sucked into a rabbit hole and get nowhere with this registry!

@mcmanda4321 FTM here too, and I found 2 good lists on Leleki website. They have things listed by Essentials, Simplify Your Life, and Nice to Have. I'm trying to stick as much as possible to just the Essentials, although I'm picking from the other 2 lists based on advice of trusted / "like" mom friends. But it's a good base!

@mcmanda4321 things like a bottle warmer and wipes warmer are pretty useless. We warmed bottles in a mug of hot water. It worked much faster than the bottle warmer! Wipes warmer is just silly in my opinion. We used/still use our baby carrier all the time. We have wraps, ergo, hipsit, and a hiking backpack, all of which we have used at different points. A bassinet or pack n play are nice to have early on to keep baby right next to your bed, but not necessary if you can have the crib in your room. I feel like babies really don't need a whole lot in the first 4 or so months. Some clothes, a swaddle, carseat, stroller, diapers, wipes, and a safe place to sleep. That's really it. Once they get older it gets more complicated lol

It’s really feeling like when it rains it pours. My husband had a close friend pass away very suddenly in August and has not been coping well but he’s working through it. We have spoken some about getting him into some grief counseling. Then last week his job had a huge layoff and he was one of them. Luckily he will get paid and have health insurance through January. And now last night we heard that his cousin has stage 3 breast cancer. I am just so sad today. She is only a few years older than me. Always so much fun, my wedding crashing, donut stealing, up for anything partner in crime. I just feel heartbroken that this is happening to her. I’m having a really hard time holding myself together at work today.

On another note, I’m a tad disappointed in my moms reaction to me telling her it’s a boy. It wasn’t the worst reaction but she said something along the lines of “A girl would have been nice but we’ll love another little boy too” I am thrilled to be giving my son a little brother. We already have a name picked out. I love being a mama to boys and I feel like if you have anything besides excitement and congratulations to share when someone shared the sex of their baby then keep it to yourself.

@iiirene I completely agree. People, especially family sometimes (unfortunately), say the things that make me want to roll my eyes the hardest. I'm sorry she made it sound like this baby is any less wanted because his gender wasn't what she was hoping for. Zipity, zip, zip, zip it.

@iiirene that's on your mom. Don't let it get to you. That's honestly one of the reasons we're keeping the sex a secret. I don't want anyone's opinion on anything related to the baby unless I ask for it, and the less we say, the less likely we are to get unwanted opinions.

@iiirene ugh that is a disappointing reaction for sure. Gender disappointment is real for some, but if it’s not your baby, keep your mouth shut about it. It feels super shitty knowing your family isn’t as happy as they could be about the baby you’re growing.

I got a ton of “hope it’s a girl!” from people before we knew, just because everyone assumes the goal is one of each. I would have been just as happy with another boy too, nothing about two (or more) of the same sex is bad!

@iiirene I’m so sorry that her reaction was not what you wanted or expected! It’s really interesting to me how people react to boy vs girl. When we announced my son we had numerous people say “aww did you want a girl?” … no, we wanted a healthy baby! Now with our second some have said “so if this one is a boy will you try again for a girl?” And my exact response has been “we want two healthy children! I love my son and would love to have another boy. We won’t be trying for a third as two is what we have always discussed and the outcome is 50/50 no matter what # child it is!” I don’t feel like anyone has those conversations when it’s a girl and that is just so bothersome!

I’m so excited you’re having a boy and it will be such a gift to your son!

I think people just assume men want sons and women want daughters (a mini-me). Although all I want is a healthy baby, I secretly hope we have another boy because it has been incredible being a "boy mom" and I would love for my son to have a built in bestie.

I found out 2 days ago my triglycerides are super high, which increases risk for preterm birth, pre-e, GD, and pancreatitis. So I basically have to eat like I have GD even though I don't (yet?).

The last 2 days have been rough. I was super nauseous and having stomach issues all day, felt super weak, and to rop it off yesterday my daughter broke her glass snow globe all over her room so I spent what felt like the entire day cleaning up glass, glitter, and antifreeze infused water

Whoever thinks getting glass/ceramic keepsakes for kids is a good idea needs a dose of reality... I should have made MIL come over and clean up the mess! She is the sweetest but always buying ridiculous things for the kids like a ceramic jewelry box and ceramic keepsake paint (and the snowglobe) because they are "so cute". Not so cute when they break into a million pieces and almost cut your kids! Her sister is just as bad and gets us super breakable Swarovski crystal ornaments every year for the tree that we can never use because kids. I am grateful, but also, do they completely forget what it's like to have kids?
