Product Spotlight: Baby Monitors

Talk to me about monitors. We didn't have one last time. Our son was in our room for his first year (our room is basically an inner and an outer bedroom, connected by French doors that we kept open), and we could hear him when we were elsewhere in the house. We're in a condo, the top floor of a 3-floor, 3 condo unit building, so we basically hear everything.

But I do see the advantage of a monitor, particularly a video monitor. Sleep training my first was hard and it didn't stick until he was almost 1, so it might be nice to have a window into what this kid is doing.

Any advice? Who had monitors, who did not, and how did that work for y'all?

I had just a cheapy audio monitor. We don’t feel comfortable with video since they are SO easily hacked. Sad, but that’s reality. It was a v-tech brand one and it still works.  I still use it so I know when my son wakes up.  He is 20 months now.

Choose one that is not Wi-Fi based. Like @anmd said, they get hacked. I was breast feeding with my last when ours got hacked and I chucked it in the trash.

We used one by infant optics. Not sure which one.
  • We also live in a small house and so have never really needed a monitor. In pinch if we think we will be distracted by what we are doing and not hear the baby we just use zoom or do a "phone call" with a computer set up with a mic in the baby's room.  It's really not that complicated although it sounds kind of weird.

I also like not wifi based because sometimes the wifi turns off for some reason. I also like having a separate monitor that doesn’t rely on my phone.
I think I have infant optics. It works pretty well. Long range too.
  • We had the ibaby with my first kid, and with the second one I barely ever used a monitor. Honestly, with this one I probably won’t use a monitor either. They’re in the room with us the first 6+ months and then with my son I felt like I stared at the monitor all the time to check for breathing, make sure he was okay, run to him the moment he woke up, etc. With my daughter we just followed a much more natural rhythm and she became very comfortable in her crib while awake too which was good.

  • We just used an audio monitor with DS, which I gave to my parents so they could use it for my grandpa with dementia when they cared for him. If they still have it, I'll probably just use the same one.
  • We bought a cheap audio monitor for our now 6 year old. If you’re looking for longevity I recommend Graco. It’s been running nonstop since we brought him home 11/26/15 and still going strong. No clue why we never turn it off 🤷🏼‍♀️
