Just wondering what you ladies thought about having this vaccine. I've heard nothing but bad things and yet at the same time, I want the best for my child. Are any of you getting this vaccine? Why or why not?
I was told by my OB that I will be getting it at my next visit, and that I should encourage those around me to get theirs as well. @bugaboo15, what bad things have you heard about it?
I've heard the baby can have a bad reaction from the shot, another was it makes both parent and baby sick, and I'm sure this one was bullshit, but I've heard some babies develop whooping couch once giving the vaccine because there bodies cant fight the virus being put in there sustems
Whooping cough is a major issue in Los Angeles so I plan on getting the vaccine. It's such an issue that any baby with a fever of 101 has to tested for whooping couch with a spinal tap and X-ray even though 95% of the time it is just a virus.
Everything I read says that the TDAP vaccine is highly recommended for pregnant women, similarly to the flu shot (according to the CDC, Mayo Clinic, what to expect, etc.)
My OB said it's basically a requirement even though you do have the right to refuse it. I just got one a year and a half ago for nursing school and they still want me to get another one. I'll probably do it since it will cause more good than harm. A sore arm for a couple days from the injection is a small price to pay to know that my child will be protected. I'll also be encouraging my DH and step daughter to get it too since they will have a lot of interaction with our baby as well.
My husband and I plan on getting it, but when I just mentioned it to my mom (It was recommended by my ob/gyn and the hospital that all grandparents get it too), she told me was already vaccinated as a child and that there is no reason she should have to get it again. Then she replied in a snarky tone, "What? You won't let me see the baby if I don't get it?" UGH!!!! Sorry its been a bad day and having my mom stop by just made it 10x worse.
Everything I heard was that it is highly recommended. I even made my whole family get vaccinated prior to DD1. DD2 is immunosuppressed and will be going through a Bone Marrow Transplant in March. Willy nilly action about vaccines isn't something I take to lightly. Mama bear comes out to protect my LO. So yes, anything to keep my kids alive and well is something I do.

I have a feeling DH will say something similar. He is not a hospital/shot person. Pretty much thinks he is a man of steel. The only time he got shots was when he was in the military and they required them for when he went in and when he deployed. I am going to try and persuade him to get one though. My mil probably won't either unfortunately. She is a nurse and doesn't even get a flu shot because she thinks they are a joke.
My doctor keeps trying to guilt trip/force me into getting a flu shot and now its about the whooping cough vaccine as well. I'm going to go with the whooping cough vaccine, but not the flu shot.
Every time I go into his office he tells me about all of the dead patients that hes worked with who have died because they got the flu and then proceeds to tell me that a lot of pregnant women are in the hospital right now because they have the flu. He says that if I get the flu then it could be so much more fatal than what it would be for someone who isn't pregnant.
While I don't disagree with what he says...I'm sure there is some truth behind it...I just feel like hes being a used car salesman and forcing me into something that I'm just not sure about.
I probably should get it, but I've read from some women who have and their baby died not long after the shot was given. I guess I'm scared because you never know what baby is allergic to and with baby inside its much harder to help baby.
I'm so torn. It took me 5 years to get pregnant and make it this far and if something happened to her then I'd die.
I'll be getting my booster here soon, DH as well. I'm making my mom get a booster as well even though it has been <5 years since she got one just to be safe.
My hospital won't let you leave the hospital unless both mom and dad have had the shot. I'm suggesting grandparents get it, along with my SIL who is a kindergarten teacher.
I am 100% pro vaccination... but not during pregnancy. I did some research on the tdap and receiving it while pregnant. Its a class C drug and research has not been able to clearly prove its safe for the baby. Therefore, I am getting it right after birth. That way I will still be protected, but the baby won't be harmed. I haven't talked to my midwife about this yet and will bring it up at my next appointment.
ETA: I am making both grandparents get it for sure before the baby is born, or they will NOT be invited to see the baby until he finishes his vaccinations.
SO glad you brought this up! Couldn't remember the name of the vaccine! Got it while pregnant with DD1 and can't wait to get it again. It will protect this babe and since my dd will be in preschool and I'm a nanny and DH is a teacher- we're around so much, def don't want to risk any whooping cough for baby. The vaccine will protect him.

This is impossible. It is a killed vaccine and cannot cause the illness that it is made to prevent. Yes, side effects can happen, but causing pertussis is NOT one of them. Please do not perpetuate false information.
Absolutely! There is a pretty bad outbreak here and unfortunately a lot of the blame is due to adults who have not gotten the booster. I've had the booster three times in the past five years. It is very important.
From the CDC: In infants younger than 1 year of age who get pertussis, about half are hospitalized. The younger the infant, the more likely treatment in the hospital will be needed. Of those infants who are hospitalized with pertussis about: 1 in 4 (23%) get pneumonia (lung infection) 1 or 2 in 100 (1.6%) will have convulsions (violent, uncontrolled shaking) Two thirds (67%) will have apnea (slowed or stopped breathing) 1 in 300 (0.4%) will have encephalopathy (disease of the brain) 1 or 2 in 100 (1.6%) will die
@animaldoctor12, she was probably confusing it with the MMR, which you should NOT be getting in pregnancy, because it is a live, attenuated vaccine. You are tested for immunity to Rubella during your pregnancy, and if you're non-immune (like me) you'll get a booster afterwards. Although, you should NOT get it right away if your baby is in the NICU (as mine will likely be).
So yay... totally looking forward to getting a rubella booster, AND more rhogam!
I had my Tdap prior to this pregnancy, but I'm requiring anyone that wants to be around LO to have it as well. Pertussis can be fatal to infants and I'm not wanting to take that chance.
My hospital wouldn't let DH and I leave with DD#1 until we both had the shot. (Probably because I have a pushy OBGYN...) But I'm a teacher and already had it due to an outbreak at schools in our state around then (4 yrs ago).
We told all grandparents to get the shot too, and all but one have complied.

Where have you read this? Whooping cough is a very serious condition and can be fatal for infants. Vaccines have proven to be effective and it's very important that you and those who plan to be around the baby receive the vaccination. It is very simple to get. You can walk into any drugstore like Walgreens or CVS and get it. It's not a "live" vaccination either so it is totally safe and recommended for pregnant moms and infants.
I will be getting my TDAP at the next appt and Doc wrote a script for my husband to get it as well. I don't love the idea of getting a vaccination while pregnant but I believe itll be okay and have not read anything that said otherwise. I, however, will not be getting a flu vaccine.
My OB told me to get it around 38 weeks so that way the baby will get some of it too and will be better protected until she's old enough for the vaccine for herself. I had the booster three years ago when I worked in the infant room at a daycare and will be getting it again whenever my OB recommends it.
My husband and I both got vaccinated. I am extremely concerned with the rise of childhood illness because people are choosing not to vaccinate. My father spent two weeks in the hospital as child because he had the meesels and mumps at the same time.
I'm getting mine at my next appointment and I'm also trying to get my H, mom, and in-laws to get theirs as well. The benefits outweigh any risks I've seen and I trust my doctors...

Just to let you know the CDC now recommends that you get it with each pregnancy no matter how close together. This statement has been issued in the last few months. My OB wasn't even aware of the new recommendations and was prompted to look it up while I sat there as soon as I informed her.
Yes I'll be getting mine again and I had everyone get in with my 11/13 baby. Pertussis can kill babies. I'm not going to F around with that or with someone who refuses to get it for the sake of my child. It's my job to protect him from people like that...
I will not be getting the tdap due to having an allergic reaction when I got it a few years ago. Praying baby stays healthy until he is able to get vaccinated himself. With all these illnesses going around its scary to even think about bringing the newborn out in public or having many visitors.
I'm on the fence with this one. My dd had major reaction to her first shot at 6 weeks old, was rushed to hosiptal with life threatening fever and febrile convulsions. Doctors recommended not to vaccinate her again as that shot had 28 active components and they could not advise what had caused reaction. I'm now so scared of injecting this LO with anything in case she has same result as her sister. The doctors and midwife are very much "it's your choice" stance. We still have not decided and have no idea what to do
My son got whooping cough at 1 year old. He was as vaccinated as he was able to be, but it's a series. The doctors said he didn't get as sick as he would have had he not been vaccinated at all.
He was lethargic, running a high fever, coughing to the point of vomiting & breathlessness & unable to sleep. It was heartbreaking and exhausting. My husband & I had already received our boosters, but my parents also had to update theirs & we ALL had to take medication. My husband, son & I all had to be quarantined at home for 5 days, so we missed work.
(He likely was exposed to it at work- he goes with me- or somewhere else in public.)
And that was a mild case. We were lucky.
In adults, whooping cough is often not recognized for what it is. (The characteristic whoop doesn't always happen) & so it's easily spread before people realize what they have. It's absolutely worth vaccinating your baby & getting the booster for any care taker or person who will regularly be around your baby.
My OB asked if I wanted the vaccine at my next visit. I said yes. I don't know of my experience the first time I was pregnant, because it wasn't offered to me and I went 6 weeks early. They did, however give it to me right after birth, and said it would go through my BM to baby. She had no reactions to it that way. This time, both me and DH will be getting it in 2 weeks. I truly feel the pros far outway the risks. OB would have told me if there were risks or side effects anyways wouldn't he?
Re: Tdap Vaccine yay or nay?
But it sounds like all of you are very confident with the vaccine and I don't feel any reason to worry anymore. I'll be getting vaccinated in 2 weeks.

They wouldn't be recommended unless they were necessary - the NHS won't waste time and money on unnecessary vaccinations.
