Nuchal Translucency Thickness

Hey all,

I had a scan at 10.5 weeks and the nuchal translucency looked quite thick, the ultrasound results listed a "possible cyctic hygroma." At 12 weeks I had a more in depth scan and the ultrasound "looked perfect" according to the doctor. The QNATAL also came back clear. The doc said that just because they couldn't see anything at the 12 week scan doesn't mean there isn't something amiss. I have an amniocentesis next week to get more answers.

I guess what I'm asking is has anyone had an abnormal nuchal translucency scan and gone on to have a healthy pregnancy/baby? I want to be excited about this pregnancy, but these worries are sucking the joy out and I'm constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop.

  • The NT is supposed to be done between 11-13 weeks. Obviously get the amnio for peace of mind if you want but I can't imagine the accuracy of an NT at 8 weeks. With all of mine it had to be done in the specific time frame. I've never looked up the stats but I do know it shouldn't be done at 8 weeks and I doubt it would be all that accurate since the baby is mostly still blobby at that point. It sounds like everything is looking good. Don't let doctors prey on your fear to do unnecessary tests.
Actually I think it's 11-14 weeks but if the 12 week and QNATAL looks good then I would think everything should be good. That being said I would be worrying also. There was a thread posted not long ago about NTs vs NIPTs. I would read through that.

  • Have you been seen by a genetics counselor? I would do that before getting the amnio. We also have a thread for these tests where you may get more responses.

  • We did, the geneticist booked us the amnio. Hopefully it's all just out of an abundance of caution 🤞
  • Edit: I just checked and the bad ultrasound was at 10w 4d
  • I second seeing the genetic counselor before the amnio.
