  • One of my students told me that at McDonalds you can get caramel in your McFlurry if you ask....now I really want that for dinner.

  • @jhysmath And now I know what I’m getting later. 😂
  • @dsmith211 the benefits of all my sophomores working at McDonald's 😂
  • I think it's probably been 10 years since I've had a McFlurry lol

You’ll pay a little extra, but I often get hot fudge added to my McFlurry. Once, the (probably excessively stoned) person who made it mixed in the hit fudge. Very sad.
  • I’ve been having a lot of dreams around Belgian waffles so I’ve eaten them at least twice this week…very random and very specific. Also delicious so I don’t mind. I wake up happy thinking I ate a waffle in my sleep 😆
  • Most of my classes work independently this week soooo I’m prepping bell work for the last quarter and my brain is dying. It cries “no more.”
  • FYI it was delicious.

@pangolindrome I wish my students could work independently. They either need me cracking the whip to get back to work, or they glue themselves to me and ask after each computation of they did it right.

@pangolindrome do you remember when McFlurry's used to actually be mixed? You'd get that thick spoon that went on the machine and stirred it all in. What a flash back 😂

That's not still a thing?! It is around here.

Wait. Was that sarcasm? I'm tired.

  • @wiseh @trapperkeeper87 LOL I was confused too. It’s still the stirring spoon thing up here in Canada!

Not where I am, @trapperkeeper87 & @newbabymama27! In Australia they stopped using those spoons several years ago (apparently because the machine took up too much bench space). We had the normal thin plastic spoons for a while but now  we have wooden spoons. Australia has made a very large push to stopping single use plastics so you are hard pressed to find anywhere that will give you a plastic straw or take-away cutlery. McDonalds have even re-designed their McFlurry cups here so they don't have the plastic lid on top anymore. Supermarkets have even phased out the cheap takeaway containers and picnic/bbq items for paper alternatives. Though you can't recycle them anyway because they still have a plastic coating so seems a bit of a show rather than making an actual difference to me.

Wow though, I had no idea that this wasn't a global thing! I have found them different across the globe. In Australia all burgers are made fresh to order - they are never pre-made and left in a warmer, which I was shocked to see when I went to Sweden. I did not consider that the McFlurry spoon would be different depending on the country you're in as well. Wild.
  • @wiseh oooh ok ok Australia explains things then! I definitely knew McDonalds is different in other countries (minus US and Canada appear mostly the same) but so cool how burgers are made fresh to order. I would love that!
  • @wiseh I'm so envious. My husband and I aren't perfect with reducing our waste, but we're always trying to get better. It hurts my soul every time we're handed a straw or see someone using a lid at a sit-down restaurant. There are so many simple changes people could make that, as a whole, could actually drastically help the environment. 😔

I agree and think it is a generational thing too, @trapperkeeper87. I look at the amount of waste my parents produce compared to my husband and I, and I am shocked. We are not particularly waste conscious people, but it must be an unconscious thing where we just don't produce as much. My parents will take out their kitchen bin every day, but our bin that is half the size is emptied maybe twice a week. We can go 2 weeks without having to have our rubbish bin collected where my parents will fill a bin double the size of ours every week. (lots of use of the word bin, hopefully it's the same word where you are 😅). I think as Gen Y and younger begin to take over the running of businesses we will start to see a decline in waste. Already most cafes that are run by young people are promoting waste reduction by doing things like offering discounts for bringing your own mug, encouraging you to bring your own container (this previously was not allowed at supermarkets but that has recently changed) and other "small" ways of making a difference.

As a side note to that, but also slightly related, as we reduce our plastics consumption the price of aluminium (so cars and electronics) will increase. The extraction of alumina from bauxite is currently only achieved through the Bayer process that relies on caustic soda. The most cost effective and impurity free way of making caustic is as a byproduct through the manufacturing of plastics. I used to work in an alumina refinery and they have seen caustic prices double over the last 10 years as the world as a whole uses less plastic, resulting in a reduction in caustic production. There are other ways of producing caustic but they result in a lot of impurities that are impossible to remove from the circuit meaning you have to use a much higher volume of caustic to get the same amount of alumina out. I find it interesting how everything in the world is connected in weird and wonderful ways like that.
  • @wiseh That's absolutely fascinating! I didn't know that plastic and aluminum are actually related, so to speak. These are the kind of random facts I love!

That said, I'm fully planning to buy my mother-in-law reusable paper towels for mother's day. They seem interested in that kind of thing, and we have some we love. We use the unbleached ones for cleaning around the house and bleached for cleaning up toddler messes and dirty hands/faces (our daughter calls them wet napkins). Using the bleached for her allows us to bleach them if needed, which is super helpful (especially if we didn't rinse one super well after use).

Managing the washing of them couldn't be easier, either! We have two bins attached to the wall behind our washer: gray is for household cleaning towels, white is for wet napkins. I just dump hers in with her laundry or our bath towels and the others go in their own wash cycle. Since starting this over a year ago, it takes us about two months to go through one roll of paper towels (which we keep on hand for super nasty messes or guests to dry their hands). We have 12 for hands and faces, and 24 for cleaning.

I'm pretty passionate about this and could go on and on. 😄 Even small changes make a difference, and it doesn't have to be all or nothing for those wanting to start somewhere. That's what helped me get motivated. You just have to start!

Our wash bins in the laundry room.

The towels are about 12"x12", double layer Birdseye cotton. (We also use a dog placemat for our toddlers placemat. 😂 Genius!)

@trapperkeeper87 We use similar though admittedly I do love paper towel, particularly for drying dishes if we need them in a hurry, as my husband will use the same teatowel to dry his hands, wipe the bench, wipe the floor and dry our dishes without seeing any problems. We never seem to have enough clean to keep up because if he's been in the kitchen I will always get a new one before I use it 🤢 I tried to implement a small towel for hands, teatowel for dishes & cloth for spills, etc. but he cannot seem to wrap his head around it.

I do find some attempts to go "green" amusing. Like at my work we have several electric vehicles but they are charged using a diesel generator because we don't have mains power to a lot of our mine site 🤦‍♀️ I also find it frustrating that the world has not adopted Sweden's landfill management style where they burn their landfill for power. If you design the plant right the emissions can be significantly limited, particularly particulate emissions, and it has to be considered what is more detrimental to the environment: continual clearing of land to increase tips while covering over tips and re-purposing the land causing who-knows what damages to the people, fauna and flora that will now be living on that old tip, or emitting some CO into the atmosphere. But, you would have emitted 2/3 of that CO into the atmosphere through the breakdown of the garbage anyway. It's been a gripe of mine ever since I lived in Sweden, as well as Australia's awful recycling program compared to Sweden (perhaps that is greatly impacted by the way we live as we don't live in communes where you can have large recycling vats people take their own rubbish to). In the town I live in we didn't have recycling facilities at all until last year! Crazy to think that in the 2020s it is a new concept for a town to recycle.
  • @wiseh Other countries are so fascinating, in both good and bad ways. I'm definitely not someone who is obsessed with my country by any means (we are so far behind in so many ways), but this is where I live and it can't easily be changed. So I do what I can.

How frustrating with respect to the towels! My husband does 98% of the dishes and therefore uses the kitchen towels more than me. I would be grossed out too if he used the same ones! His biggest flaw there is using the same ones for weeks on end if I don't change them out. 🤮
    DD 10/2019
  • @wiseh my husband is the same with the towels it drives me crazy. Also I thought it was interesting a few years ago when I worked with a girl from Australia and tampons didn't have applicators and she was so confused about the applicators and why they were necessary. Teenage me would not have been able to figure it all out without the plastic applicator I don't think.
  • My husband decided to take the day off today. Not sure why he just said he needed to. But he got up early and made us bacon and eggs for breakfast so I won't complain. He doesn't eat eggs at home because he's super picky and for whatever reason home cooked eggs gross him out but will go out to breakfast and get eggs, so the fact he made the kids and I eggs is extra nice.
  • wisehwiseh member
haha we do have tampons with applicators @jhysmath but they're not very common. I found them super awkward to use so just stuck with tampons without applicators, but speaking of waste reduction I don't use either anymore - I use "period undies" which have become massive over here. I was shocked when I learned you don't have that applicatorless tampon option in the US though 😂

I'm glad your husband is taking some time for himself, too, especially with everything else going on outside the pregnancy. I hope you get to spend some quality time together today as a family ❤
  • @jhysmath Your husband and I are opposite. Eggs at restaurants gross me out. I only eat them if they're cooked at home. haha So sweet of him to cook you breakfast!
  • @wiseh We actually do have applicator-free tampons, but I don't personally know many people who use them. I actually don't even know if many people realize it's an option, now that I think about it.

What brand of underpants do you use for your period? I've been very intrigued by those, but also super nervous. My periods are rarely super heavy and would be considered regular or light the whole time. I usually use organic cotton pads because they don't upset my skin like other ones do.
    DD 10/2019
  • But lets be real - how convenient is it to not have to worry about periods/tampons for a little while (small wins!!!)
  • I had been wanting to buy a menstrual cup forever and finally did in December and was working up the courage to use it "next period"... then found out I was pregnant! Haha! Now I have like 7 more months to mentally prepare.. assuming I'll get my period 6 weeks postpartum like I did last time
  • wisehwiseh member
Hahahaha yes, @melyrae! Love not having a period, though I am extremely apprehensive of what's to come in September 😬

@trapperkeeper87 my periods are the opposite and if I don't wear my period undies I am usually rocking a night-time pad. I use a variety of different brands - Modi bodi, luna loves & bonds are what I've had recently. My faves for sleeping is the luna loves because they are full briefs and have absorbency right up to the waist band, though I have found that after 6 months of use they are losing their absorbency - which I think is to be expected, just annoying that I have to replace them frequently (https://www.loveluna.com/collections/heavy-bleed-brief/products/copy-of-period-full-brief-1) My faves for during the day are the Bonds "bloody comfy full brief heavy flow" undies (https://www.bonds.com.au/bloody-comfy-period-full-brief-wtgl-bac.html). Modi bodi is supposedly the most popular brand but I didn't rate them in comfort so don't use them unless I absolutely must. I'm not sure if you can get any of those options outside Australia so I'm not sure how much help that info is.. But, I did see that the luna loves are mostly cotton so this could work if you are sensitive to fabrics in normal underwear too.
  • @trapperkeeper87 I have heard great things about Thinx, too!
  • I use a cup too now, with the undies for lighter days. When I was in college I switched to the applicatorless ones and found them easy to use. In high school it's what my mother used and I just couldn't get the hang of it. I also had a weird phobia that a tampon would go all the way in and get stuck up so far by my ovaries that I wouldn't be able to get it out. How come high school sex ed doesn't teach us about a cervix?

@wiseh WAIT Australia doesn’t have the spoons? Both Sweden and USA do. Also, I miss how Sweden has gluten free buns. A lot. I never get the premade ones because I’m celiac, but honestly if you’re in Sweden again, you need to go to MAX. They’re the best!

Random: Cheerios Oat Crunch Cinnamon with a diced fuji apple and milk is pure heaven. SO GOOD.

oooo gluten free buns at maccas/donken would be amazing! We went to MAX when we went to Sweden in 2020 and it was sooooooooo good! In Australia with have similar called Grill'd which are supposedly "healthy" burgers, but the good thing is they have all the options, from vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, low carb, etc. and have a great understanding of allergies which was amazing when my daughter had allergies & I will still breastfeeding.
  • I went to visit my friend in london last fall and unexpectedly got my period and had to buy tampons at the nearest shop. Imagine my surprise when I find my way to the nearest restroom and realized there was no applicator! I love the waste reduction but the insertion was a bit strange… over there it’s completely normal, though! I guess it’s all what you’re used to
  • Love my cup haha been using it for about five years now (but that includes two 10 month breaks bc pregnancies)! I was so so tired of buying and throwing away tampons/applicators. It’s a little awkward if you have to empty and replace the cup when out in public but not horrible .
  • @JRae2015 I've been using my cup for 8ish years and yes the first few times it's like ughhhh what am I doing? and then it gets so much easier. I will say, last time we moved (whilst I was at the hospital after delivering my second) my husband spilt something all over the drawers that I kept my cup and cloth pads in and decided he didn't have anything to clean it up with so he just threw out everything in the drawer. Both of my cups were in there I was livid when I found out granted I didn't need a cup for another 11 months after that. I bought one that was cheaper than the diva and it just was not a good fit and I hated it. So happy I found the diva first.
  • I need a nap.

  • I've spent most of my day researching the school I'm applying to. I read school board minutes and located the two people who are retiring so I know which positions will be open. I was excited to see they were both retiring and not being replaced or terminated. They are both high school so I don't think my husband will be pleased unless they move some one from middle school up. He's joked how terrible would it be if they accepted the two of us and then he went to the other school district instead leaving them with the candidate that will be out for 12 weeks. I finally was able to get him to realize that I am taking 12 weeks off, he kept saying well you'll only be out for 8 weeks. Nope I am taking 12 weeks and if they can't accommodate that, I will not take the job.
  • My manager asked me to stay a few extra hours today so I don't need to come in tomorrow after my doctors appointment! Shes also not in today and I have finished all my duties so I just get to work on my registry until school is out. Score! Plus tomorrow is supposed to be the nicest weather we have had.
  • Ya'll, I'm excited!  The woman who is in my job at the prison my boss came from has been on maternity leave for months.  Well, she's back, and she's going to spend a day here with me in a couple weeks showing me some of the things she does (since no one knows exactly what my job is) and also give pointers on dealing with my boss!

  • Guys... Sadly I rocked that interview and they'd be fools not to hire me. I made it clear that I would be taking 12 weeks off and wouldn't qualify for fmla (the principal was like you'll take your fmla leave its fine and I had to explain to her that I wouldn't qualify for protections because I wouldn't have worked enough hours) I asked a bunch of questions and she was like, well I don't know that answer you ask great questions... But the what looks like head math teacher kept telling me, it's a teachers market and I should negotiate that into my contract, regarding salary and insurance not starting until September 1st.

It also looks like I'll be able to enroll our preschooler out of district there so that would save one headache.
