First Appointments

I called my doctor to make an appointment and they scheduled me for 10 weeks. I then called another doctor who was able to schedule me for 8 weeks. Should I keep both appointments or just go to one? The doctor for my 8 week appointment is not someone who I would want to see again, I just wanted information before Easter so I can tell my family.

Your insurance may not cover 2 appointments, so I would cancel one. There’s not too much change in those 2 weeks unless they want to do testing.

If you do not plan on seeing the doctor that scheduled for 8 weeks, then cancel and do not waste their resources, just because you want info a couple of weeks earlier.  Thats not cool. There may be someone who needs that open spit for a more serious issue than "i need to know before Easter." Also, good luck w/ insurance, if you plan on using it.  Esp if they both are scheduled at 1st prenatal appt

You have a positive pregnancy test - guess what happens at your 1st appt (at least with me and our practice) office pregnancy test, lots of questions, family history, and schedule for an ultrasound for the 12th week.  You get no scan, scheduled for blood work and ultrasound, and thats about it.

Lots of practices do a dating scan at the first appointment so it’s not necessarily accurate that you won’t get one until 12 weeks. In fact, my doctor only does the dating scan and the anatomy scan since the first trimester screening (NIPS) is considered more accurate than the NT scan. If you want to be seen earlier than be seen earlier 🤷🏻‍♀️

I called the office asking if they would do an ultrasound that early and they said they would and is why I booked that earlier appointment. Thanks for your helpful information :)

The office for my 8 week appointment said they would do an ultrasound which is the main reason I wanted to book that earlier appointment.

I’m sure the doctors office can handle figuring out scheduling patients that might need to be seen more urgently. First tri is nerve wracking enough without having to wait weeks to be seen for a viability scan. I personally advocated to be seen at 7 weeks instead of 8 and I also had a 2nd scan at a free clinic at 8 weeks just for extra peace of mind.

@harpseal135 lets keep judgement to ourself and review the bump guidelines. This is a safe place to talk out our hopes and fears. Not to be called names or a time to be rude.

@money_baby you literally just joined 30 minutes ago. Not judgmental - I seriously can not believe that waiting 2 weeks is a big deal.

Yes, 1st tri is nervewrecking,  I have a severe reproductive issue that I dealt w/ that could affect pregnancy tremendously,  but still did not push for earlier ultrasound.  I did what my doctor felt was right, 12 weekUS....I was nervous but yet we still told family after a positive pee stick, not ultrasound or even a dr. Appt. Just because you get an ultrasound at 8 weeks doesn't necessarily mean all will be ok at 10.  Sad, but true.

But to go to a Dr that you have no intention on staying w/ is rediculous.

Sorry, but I stand by my stance.

Just because you go in at 8 weeks doesn't mean that everything will be ok at 10 weeks.   Very sad, but true!  I know ladies who went in at 10 + weeks and things ended up badly for them :(

What if you go in at 8 weeks and all they see is a fetal pole and no HB? (It happens) They will schedule you for another ultrasound at 9 weeks - then you will go to a new provider at 10 weeks?  Insurance may not cover, so just be prepared for a huge out of pocket cost.

There is nothing wrong w/ switching providers due to issues you may have or not being a good fit for you, but to purposefully schedule one "just to get an earlier scan, before Easter" is NOT cool!

@inthewoods23 my tits are just fine, thank you.

Being a patient that needed the extra time slot, with an Ob/Gyn- I was grateful my doctor stayed over office hours to accommodate me, then meet me at the hospital to do an emergency surgery that night.

So, no emergency rooms are not always the clear answer to medical necessities.

If a doctor tells you to go, that's a different story.

What happens 90% of the time you run to the ER because of something so minor it could have waited until the next business day?  Not much of anything.

They tell you to call your doctor.   They tell you the worst case senerio, "missed miscarriage." Follow up w/ your doctor.  This is repeated over and over on these boards: "i was spotting, i went to the ER, they did an ultrasound and diagnosed me with a missed miscarriage, now I'm scared.  They just told me to follow up with my doctor."

They are NOT SPECIALISTS and you don't see the specialist unless it is a dire situation! They generalize practitioners,  you typically see - unless its TRULY EMERGENT!

A phone call to a nurses line only does so much. Not everything revolves

Look at the bigger picture.  This is part why our medical system is so screwed up in the states!

    I'm done discussing this.

    Bye!
