Hi everyone! I am new to the discussion board but since my husband and I are on different pages lately as far as covid goes I wanted some other input. This is my 2nd pregnancy during covid and it was hard enough with the 1st I'm struggling with my thoughts of handling the 2nd. I'm due in May and I haven't been vaccinated yet - my concerns are not about the efficiency or effects of the vaccine but since I didn't have it with my 1st I'm genuinely concerned about doing something different with my 2nd. My husband being in medicine is on same page with the doctors and wants me to get the vaccine. Just trying to gather some perspective on the situation and wanted others opinion if you have any?!?!? Thanks!
@raerae125 it’s a good discussion to have with your doctor and ultimately such a personal decision. ❤️
I am pro vaccines in general but also pro choice. We are all just trying to make the best decision we can in these crazy times, right? When my family all got covid earlier this month and it immediately targeted my lungs, I was very relieved that I was fully vaccinated. If nothing else, I feel like and hope it took the edge off. My anatomy scan last week came back showing no issues too.
@raerae125 IMHO I would listen to what your drs and husband are saying…and then do what you’re comfortable with. It’s your body and your pregnancy. If you’re not comfortable with a medical intervention, then you should be able to decline. While I am pro-vaccine, I never saw the need to get this one and never felt comfortable with it, so I’ve declined. I currently have covid and while I feel crappy (body aches and headaches have been the worst), I’m still very comfortable with my decision. At the end of the day, you shouldn’t be pressured into anything you’re not comfortable with, but I would also encourage you to research for yourself if you’re not certain where you stand
Also, pro-vaccine but understand everyone has their own reasons for feeling the way they do and, ultimately, we are all trying to make the best decision for our families given the information we have. I was double vaxxed before getting pregnant. I’ve been due for my booster for over a month. Much to my family’s disapproval (not my husband, but my parents and siblings), I’m holding out til I’m 28-32 weeks pregnant (exactly when will depend on my anxiety with case numbers in my region…) to get my booster as it is MY opinion that that will give the baby the best protection based on other vaccines that are recommended in pregnancy. Thankfully, my husband supports me and is getting his booster asap to help protect me as well. In my case, I’m not at worried about how I would fair with Omicron, but want to ensure my infant has the best protection when they’re fresh and fragile. I also understand that I’m accepting some risk as, being pregnant, we are higher risk to have more severe symptoms and there have been cases where the baby/placenta/pregnancy have been affected (but in my reading, this was more with Delta than Omicron. Or perhaps there just isn’t enough info on Omicron because it’s still new-ish).
Agreed with others that it’s an entirely personal choice. Do your research, decide what you’re comfortable with, and don’t let anyone bully you into one way or another. I didn’t get the booster during this pregnancy (I was eligible during first trimester and wasn’t comfortable with it) and now that I’ve had covid, I will likely wait to get it until after I have the baby since she has antibodies now anyway.
@raerae125. Ultimately it is your decision. I am pro choice for most things and generally support people in making their own decisions. However, for me personally I can't understand why anyone wouldn't get vaccinated against covid or flu or any other preventable disease in general unless there was a legitimate medical reason not to. The research all shows it is completely safe and also that vaccinated mother means baby gets some antibodies. Did you get a flu shot during this pregnancy? Tdap? What is holding you back from getting the covid vaccine? Do you question other vaccines in the same manner? I got my initial 2 doses last year (January/February) and my booster in December and had no issues at all.
@raerae125 Ultimately this is a conversation for you and your OB/midwife. It’s recommended by ACOG for pregnant women in any trimester. Personally, I was double vaccinated right away since I work in healthcare and got my booster at my 20wk appointment after a normal anatomy ultrasound. I waited because my husband is not pro covid vaccine and I didn’t want the vax to be blamed if an abnormality was found on US

OP I am trying to understand what the basis of your concern actually is, if you state it’s not about efficacy or effects of the vaccine. Not wanting to do something different during your 2nd pregnancy than you did with your 1st is very vague. When we know better (or in the timeline of this pandemic, have better resources available to protect ourself and our unborn child) we should do better.
Your reasoning is a little too much along the lines of “we used xyz recalled unsafe infant sleep device with our first child and nothing bad happened so we will use it again”.
In my opinion two things you need to ask yourself are 1) How would you be able to cope with a poor outcome for your unborn baby if you contract covid while unvaccinated and knowing that your choice could have prevented that?”
And 2) Have you considered the impact on your older child and spouse if you yourself have a poor outcome from contracting covid while pregnant and unvaccinated?
Because poor fetal and maternal outcomes are known possible outcomes of contracting covid while pregnant and unvaccinated. And neither are known possible outcomes for receiving the vaccine during pregnancy.
Well Covid positive household here. Husband tested negative on home test and rapid (even though he had symptoms for a few days) before finally testing positive on PCR. I was negative on Friday but didn’t have any symptoms yet. Woke up this morning and felt like I got hit by a truck I was hoping I was just asymptomatic all week. No such luck. My one year old doesn’t have any symptoms yet. So stressful being sick while pregnant though ugh. Can’t help but worry about baby. Hoping it clears quickly 😰 fully vaccinated including booster here so hoping that’ll help!
To the people talking earlier about the difficulty getting at home covid tests, I commiserate! I also wanted to post the link for getting free covid tests through the US postal service. Who knows how long they will take to receive but you can get four tests per household delivered for free from the USPS. Here is the link, or just Google search USPS covid tests and it will come up too: https://special.usps.com/testkits
I just got mine in the mail yesterday and I ordered them Jan 18! I will say the tests actually worked for me too. I took one while waiting for my PCR and it was positive, PCR ended up being positive too.
Hey all. For families who have had Covid recently, what were your little kids’ first symptoms? I think our 2 year old might have it but it’s so hard to distinguish between that and other things. And rapid testing him as been very tricky
@coffeemamaaaaa DS is just under 2 and had it. He was super crabby, congested, and his appetite disappeared (I think things were tasting funny to him because he would take a bite of something and make a face and refuse to eat it.) DH and I only rapid tested ourselves and our oldest, and just assumed DS and DD2 were positive since they all had some kind of symptoms but we were having such a hard time getting tests.
@coffeemamaaaaa DD is 18m and had a low fever (99.5-100.9), slight cough, and congestion. The day before she got a fever she was coughing some and looked pale to me. Her symptoms lasted for like 3 or 4 days and she was generally crabby. We went to her ped to get her tested because we knew she had been exposed at daycare.
@coffeemamaaaaa both me and my husband were positive with symptoms and didn’t bother getting my 1 year old tested. The only thing we have noticed with her is she threw up one night and her appetite has been off for just under a week now. No idea if that’s Covid or not, otherwise no symptoms.
For those of you who have had Covid, mine thankfully has been very minor other than one day of being sick. What I’ve noticed though is my hair has been shedding and my boobs which were super full, big, and hard most of my pregnancy so far completely lost all their volume. Going to mention it to my OB but thought it was interesting and wondering if any other pregnant moms have noticed the boobs too. Probably because my body is putting its effort into fighting the virus vs milk, just interesting.
@jc0820 we had COVID over Christmas and I haven’t noticed any difference in my breast or hair! However I still have this lingering cough that comes up at night. Nothing serious, more annoying, but slowly getting better.
@jc0820 glad you're feeling okay! Re: boob shrinkage, in general mine feel fuller when I'm properly hydrated. Maybe that's the case with you, your body is just working so hard and you might be dehydrated? I can definitely see how being sick would affect all that, regardless of the reason!
Any moms have complications of covid? I’m due in may and I have a mild placental abruption. I could use some positivity right now!? Or is there another thread for this question?
@jinnyr I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this 😢 It’s mild enough that they don’t want to deliver right away? Hopefully you are being monitored very closely?
Yes it’s very small it’s 2cm. So they are watching it. I’m only 26 weeks. Really scared though. Anyone have something like this and delivered fine at term? My midwife doesn’t seem to be that concerned! I’ve had no bleeding or anything. They just found it on the anatomy scan.
@jinnyr no experience here, and as far as I know, no one else has posted about post-covid complications on this board! I would say if you’re worried, you can always get a second opinion. Abruptions are serious issues and can cause a lot of different complications, so if it’s been officially diagnosed and you’re not comfortable with your midwife’s action plan, go to your hospital or birthing center *especially* if you have any bleeding or elevated blood pressure. IMO, I would get a second opinion regardless, since it can cause a loss of oxygen and nutrients to baby.

Yeah agree with @skc040512 I wouldn’t be fine with being told about an abruption and no further plan for extremely close monitoring or precautions… I’d definitely also encourage you to get a second opinion just to see what they say!! Sending lots of good thoughts for you!!
Thanks yes I’m Getting a second opinion actually a third soon. That was the first diagnosis. A fetal team said it was a fibroid last week, so did a few other techs. I’m still not convinced though at all and I’m struggling. I’m feeling terrible for persistently asking questions and wanting more care. My midwife I’m sure wants to run screaming especially after the fetal team said it was a fibroid. So yes already going for a third opinion. Hoping to just find others who have had a PA regardless of cause and had a positive outcome.
thanks yes no doubt. Basically because it’s so small I’ve been told to do normal activities and I’ll have more monitoring, and to rest more, don’t lift etc…I have monthly scans etc. But nothing more. I’ve had three scans and two of them were fine and unchanged. The first one was when they found it.. Which is good I guess. Still scary it’s there but good it’s small And unchanged. Then it was said it was a fibroid by a fetal Team last week!! But no one can give me a straight answer of what it ACTUALLY IS. so I’m literally beside myself. I know my midwife has tried but I feel like a lunatic! So what do you do then? What do you do when you feel like it’s all wrong? Other than just ho to the hospital repeatedly after you have been told not to really worry? Then they question your sanity. 🤦🏼♀️
Just wanted to share my Covid experience for those who might be looking in the future: I was pretty sick for one day (aches, chills) then woke up the next day feeling almost back to normal. Had minor congestion for two days or so. Baby has been active this entire time and I noticed no changes in his movements (other than him being more active on the day I was sick) I had my first prenatal appointment today since testing positive and his heart rate is still what it was prior to Covid (140s). OB has scheduled me for a growth scan in the third trimester and has me taking daily baby aspirin to prevent blood clots. She said this is routine for pregnant women who had Covid during pregnancy. She said the risk for blood clots in pregnant women with Covid is higher and even some of her own patients with covid have experienced this.
