Anyone doing NIPT? My results came in and I was a low risk for all things tested but also having a boy! I already have a 16 month old boy. I was hoping a bit for a girl but I’m really happy.
I am doing an NIPT, but have to wait a few more weeks! Hubby and I would love this to be a girl, but like you said, it’ll be exciting either way! And how special to know! I’m glad everything is healthy!!🥰
A lot of mom’s check or respond to the weekly randoms more than check new threads, so if there aren’t a lot of responses here, you could try there!!
We definitely should have a gender reveal thread though, because people who are doing NIPTs will be getting those in a matter of weeks, if not already! Perhaps this could be for that, especially if the name is able to be changed. That way it would include results for moms who are waiting for the anatomy scan, but for now be available for NIPT results!
@knottie1735cfadae2ae15f i just did the blood work for NIPT on thursday (they took NINE tubes of blood 😫). Husband and I are split on what gender we're rooting for 🤣 What was it like getting the results back? Did you receive them electronically (like on a patient portal) or did you have to wait for your doctor to talk you through them?
I'm not actually sure I want to do NIPT because the outcome of the teats will have no effect on what I do with my babies. I guess it's good to be prepared, but idk. I feel like it may be unnecessary for me.
@bridgiebee82 I wanted the knowledge. For ex I would never terminate for Downs, but knowing that I could get a start on a local community and planning for a trust for my baby was worth the testing for me.
@ced45 I had NIPT with both my kids, and both times I received a call from the office nurse to tell me the genetics results, and asking if I wanted to know the sex. It felt kind of weird to find out something that important and exciting over the phone. I think I might wait this time and ask them to write it down and put in an envelope or something so husbeast and I can open it together.
@anniemarie887 agree about just wanting the knowledge and to be prepared. Id rather have time to digest that kind of news and do research on it than be thrown in the deep end.
@meagan-firsttimemommy8-22 unclear on why the 9 tubes... it was my first appointment as well, so im hoping it was for other stuff too. I was so taken aback by the volume and trying not to pass out I couldnt focus on what she was saying (Exhibit B of why i dont like in the moment surprises haha!)
@maggiemadeit thats a good idea about asking for an envelope, i agree that would be anticlimatic to get the gender on the phone!
@ced45 I think that's how many they took from me too, and I'm not doing NIPT....but they do a full blood panel, std testing, and a few other things 🤷 I get fainty whether it's one tube or twelve so I tried not to look lol
I can’t remember the tubes specifically for NIPT, but for many of the blood draws it was a lot. It’s a normal like CBC panel, and where I live you get a STD and drug screen usually twice if memory serves me right.
@ all the people discussing the bloodwork (Sorry y’all)
They took a bunch from me at my 6wk/intake appt too. It was a surprisingly easy draw for me though, usually I struggle to give enough for one little half-full tube and have to hope it’s enough to go on, but this last time it was just like oh, you need a gallon of blood, okay here ya go! Boggles. Several STD tests, probably a drug test they didn’t tell me about, blood type (*TW* even though I JUST HAD THAT DONE in September, with y’all, when we did the bloodwork that confirmed my CP, so wtf? Why do it again? End TW), CBC, A1C, an MMR titer, I think… it was a lot, and it just loaded in to my patient portal and nobody’s called to go over it. So I guess everything was good? I’ll ask when I go again on the 27th.
They did 7 tubes at my first appointment (no NIPT yet). Basically all the stuff @mangoandguava said plus progesterone because I specifically requested that. It was fine except that midway through tube 6 my blood stopped coming out and she had to jiggle it around to start the flow again. Ow. The instructions I got said they’d only call if something was bad so I freaked out for a sec when the nurse called but she was actually calling to say everything was good. Whew.
I had 9 done right before I conceived, as we were trying to troubleshoot. As the time was ticking I was thinking about it and feeling so queasy. Lol.. I hope that means I won't have many to give when it comes time for nipt 😅
Oh so I just remembered this. I was an egg donor back in the day and had to do genetic carrier testing and STDs and alllll kinds of stuff before I could qualify. They did 17 tubes that time. It was so crazy. That was over a decade ago so hopefully they’ve streamlined it a bit and the girls doing it now don’t have to do as many.
ced45 So if you did natera, the turn around time is pretty fast (8 days) but I had the office assistant call my husband tell him the results. However! Natera will send you results via email too thankfully I didn’t see it till after.
For anyone wondering natera test is a 2 tube test. Maternity 21 is a one tube test and a normal ob panel is about 6 or 8 depending on what your doctor orders.
I used to be a phlebotomist for my OB, sooo many people would pass out. But keep in mind after your new ob labs you shouldn’t have more labs until 24 weeks for glucose tolerance. That’s it’s own level of hell lol
@knottie1735cfadae2ae15f Thank you! I’m doing Natera, so I’m relieved to hear that. I just did 5 at my confirmation appointment and they said it would be the most drawn, but wasn’t sure if that included NIPT. Two months ago I had to have 6 vials drawn in regard to unrelated testing and they were big! I don’t pass out, but it’s no fun!!
@shenry18@meagan-firsttimemommy8-22 that glucose test is my biggest worry about all of my appointments. I am thinking about asking if I can just eat a cup of sugar before my appointment instead 😂. I’ve heard horror stories about the glucose drink, and I already don’t drink much of anything except water and the occasional glass of milk.
@mangoandguava girl unfortunately it’s all true. I used to think all those women were being babies but I ate my words when it was my turn. Definitely share your concerns with your doctor, they may be able to accommodate you.
@mangoandguava@shenry18 I’ve heard that Lemon-Lime isn’t *as bad* so maybe that flavor could be requested if there are no other options. I can’t even take liquid DayQuil and keep it in.. I’m almost entirely a water drinker. I will have to ask my doctor if I could add a certain amount of sugar to a glass of water and drink it instead as well. That would be so much better. Perhaps I could squeeze a lemon in too… But I’m probably dreaming!😂 Thank you for the well wishes. I hope everything goes smooth for everyone else as well!!
@mangoandguava the glucose drink isn't that bad at all. It tastes like flat orange pop. I was a little worried the first time about being able to drink it all in the time limit because I'm a slow drinker and don't drink that much total liquid to begin with, but it was fine. Second time was a breeze. The hardest part about it was having to fast, which meant I didn't get my morning coffee until after the blood draw.
Yeah I definitely wouldn't drink it on its own but it's not like intolerable or anything. I failed my first glucose and had to do the 3 hour one, THAT drink was worse because it's even more concentrated....but the one hour isn't so bad.
I had gestational diabetes last time around, so I am doing the glucose tolerance test early (like, in a few weeks!) Given how nauseous I'm feeling, I just hope I can keep the drink down!
Also here to chime in that the glucose test isn’t bad. I see my OBGYN at a physicians pavilion on the hospital campus, so the hospital lab does it. They always have you do it before whatever week that appt is. So I went in the lab, literally chugged it, walked back over to the appt. And typically by the time you wait and have the appt your hour is up! Not bad at all. Pretty sure my lab has “flavors” too.
I passed the one hour glycous test last time and tbh it wasn't really that bad. The drink was very sweet and I did feel a bit jittery for awhile, but I just read on my phone while waiting to get my blood drawn and that was it.
Also to all the ladies who got large quantities of blood drawn - last pregnancy I had blood work ordered after my first appointment and had like 5 or 6 vials taken. This time I've had a total of 1 vial taken so far. 🤷♀️ I didn't do any genetic testing last time - but I'm debating looking into cost this time.
@leahrnmom you’re overweight? Is that something they require women to do if bmi indicates them being overweight. I just learned at my first OB appointment that I am also considered overweight and if I have to do 2 glucose tests I will not love it
@wigglyicecream@leahrnmom my pre-baby BMI was also considered overweight. I haven't been told I need to do an early glycouse test and will not be pleased if I have to do it twice.
Just for the record we all know the BMI scale is an antiquated system that we should just cancel anyway. Especially since it wasn’t designed with anybody in mind but white men.
@wigglyicecream agreed. I’m short and was a gymnast and my BMI was always borderline or above normal. It’s such a damaging metric, especially so because it’s so widespread still. My first pediatrician actually said something to me about my 3 year old daughter’s BMI because that was the first year they started calculating it. She said, “it’s on the high range so just something to watch but not necessarily do anything about.” I wanted to scream, if you saw my child it wouldn’t even cross your mind that she could possibly be overweight.

Nervous about the Glucose test…..😞
@meagan-firsttimemommy8-22 sending one and done vibes when gtt time comes!
