GTKY: Where are you from?

I know we discussed this a little bit in our introductions, but I thought now that we are starting to get to know each other better we can talk about it again.
Where are you from?

Re: GTKY: Where are you from?

  • We live in MN, the Twin Cities area. Both me and MH grew up just across the border in WI. We moved to MN 5ish years ago. We both like where we live. It’s close to family. I could do without the cold and snow… but I don’t see that changing any time soon. So I’m trying to learn to embrace it more.

  • We live in western Pennsylvania. We just moved to a pretty rural area after living in a busy suburb and we’re loving that we are surrounded by farms but can still get to “civilization” without driving too far. The town has a super cute Main Street and we’re excited to be a part of the community. We are now only 15 mins from my parents too, which I’m super excited about!
  • We live in central Illinois, also in twin cities. I don’t love living in Illinois ($$$$$) but I do love Midwest living. I like all 4 seasons but it’d be great if winter could end by March 1. 😜 We lived in the St. Louis area for a few years and that was nice but my job and family are here so this is where we are for now.
  • Cincinnati born and raised. Lived in Northern Kentucky for a few years and last year we just bought a house in Cincinnati and moved back to my husband's side of town. I don't love it here, but my FIL owns a business which my husband works for and plans to take over one day so. Here we are lol
  • WI here. I also appreciate that we very clearly get all 4 seasons (60 degrees in the winter is NOT winter!). I'm actually from IL so when we moved to WI we got to still see family a good amount. DH was born and raised here so highly unlikely we will ever move.

@sunshineandlemons Oh interesting, I didn’t know there were other places referred to as twin cities. It makes sense though. I thought it was just our nickname, specific to us lol. Ooops. I did look it up though and found so many examples of twin cities. One of them being Buda and Pest, merging to one city, Budapest, at some point. I always wondered why people referred to one side of the river there as Buda and the other side Pest. Obviously has historical meaning. (sorry, I love this kind of useless information lol)

  • New Englander here! Born and raised in New Hampshire, as was MH. We just moved to Vermont a year ago due to COVID job changes. We are now 2 hours from family and friends and I have been struggling. We are "just over the boarder" but it feels like a million miles away from where I consider my home.
  • Central Ohio here, just north of Columbus. My husband and I both moved here for our first job which is where we met and bought our home over 10 years ago. We always thought we would move but just haven't done it yet! We dream of a forever home with a little land. Raised in North Dakota so I miss the snow here but realize they are not equipped physically or mentally to handle it :0)

Currently live in Phoenix. I grew up in Pennsylvania, near where The Office is set. I also lived in Austin, TX for a few years and in between traveled to the 48 continental states. So Ive been to most of the US and a couple parts of Canada. I detest the cold/snow. If it's under 50 degrees, I am very unhappy. I do miss good thunderstorms though.

    Started dating: July 1st, 2013

    Baby #3 Due: July 7th, 2022
(maybe I only ovulate in October XD)
  • We are in a Chicago suburb. Both hubby and I grew up in the area and all our family is around here. We just moved back a year ago from FL and I haven’t lived in this area for 20 years so it’s been interesting! I do like the town we are In though because it has a super cute walkable downtown area and awesome trail access. I’m a runner and trail access was my #1 thing in house hunting 🤣🤣 I’m not thrilled about living in winter after nearly 10 years living in FL and SoCal but I know how to handle it (I also lived in WY and WA for a while) but we really like being near family and it’s the main reason hubby came around to having another kiddo since we have more support here
  • I’m a proud Marylander born and raised. We live in the Baltimore/DC area. MH is from New Jersey but lived all over between college and meeting me so he grumbles every now and then about moving. But we love it here and it’s a great place to raise a family.
  • Another New Englander here (hi @jellie603)! I was born in Vermont, but raised and still live in Massachusetts (about 20 minutes outside of Boston). I went to college in Missouri and grad school in Kentucky - so I'm also a big fan of the Midwest!
  • Grew up in Illinois, been living in Vermont for 10 years. My husband's family is here which is nice. I do love being able to hike and do outdoorsy things often. We live out in the country with a few acres of land. It's nice to have that space and the quiet, though we do end up doing a lot of driving.

New England, stand up! :D I was born in Puerto Rico then my family moved to New Jersey when I was about 6 years old. I was raised and lived in Northern Jersey until 2016. Around June 2016 DH and I packed up our daughter and moved to Massachusetts in search of a better educational experience for her. We've been here ever since.
  • We're close to Portland Oregon. I grew up about 2 hours from here in Washington. I've lived a few different places, but keep coming back here. :)
34 year old mama of a 4 year old girl.
1st birth through years of trying and the wonder drug letrozole.
    Second a great surprise.

  • I currently live in Bentonville, Arkansas. I grew up in Joplin, Missouri. It is in the very southwest corner of Missouri. I went to school in Tennessee and Kansas City.
  • Northern Ontario, Canada. It is very cold, and snowy where I am. Today feels like -31C (which I googled to see and is -24F) I'm back in my hometown after 16 years living in a different (and warmer!) part of the province, but having family nearby to help with childcare has been absolutely priceless. I definitely don't think we would be having baby #2 if we didn't make this move. Where we were before, our families were both 5+ hours away. That combined with the pandemic resulted in being quite isolated for most of 2020/first half of 2021. While I am not a huge fan of the cold, it is a tradeoff and I am still happy we moved up here!
  • Another New Englander here. I grew up in Western MA, but now live just outside Providence, RI in a big old farmhouse.

  • We live in WI, in the greater Madison area. We are about 1-1.5 hrs from both parents, although if they were a little closer it'd be nice for childcare purposes. Love this area of the state though for hiking and biking. Idk if anyone has heard of Devil's Lake State Park, but it's in the top 10 most visited state parks in the country and is just beautiful
  • @sjb2215 Wow, that state park looks so pretty! We've done a lot of camping at the wisconsin state parks the last couple years, but we've never been there. We just sold our camper last fall since we wanted to upgrade but figured we'd likely be due with #2 in the middle of the summer too. So we're going to hold off on buying a new one for a couple years, let the market cool off. I'm going to suggest this park to my parents (who also camp). It looks beautiful!

  • @sjb2215 I love Madison. My husband and I have spent a few long weekends up there. Lots to see and do and the food is great!
  • I live in Tampa, Florida! I was born in Winter Park but have lived here my whole life. It gets really hot in the summer, especially in July. I’m already researching all the ways to make sure baby stays cool and protected from the sun since we are pretty active. Totally open to any advice!
  • @ericaraimondi It’s not that hard to keep baby comfy in the summer. I live in Phoenix, which is basically a toaster in the summer. My babies often just wear a diaper in the house to stay cool. It makes for great and easy skin to skin time and a good breastfeeding bond too. If we do go outside, which would only be on the cooler days, I just make sure they stay in the shade. If I’m wearing them I put a little hat with a brim on or cover them with a light cloth. NOT COMPLETELY. Just wearing it like a cape with a hood. Just so they don’t get sunburned. I don’t personally put sunscreen on them. But full disclosure I don’t wear it either, and I’ve only gotten maybe three sunburns in my life despite loving the sun and the outdoors. It’s just my skin, and my kids seem to have inherited that. But babies are super sensitive so I do make sure they aren’t in the sun for very long.

  • @tuxielove93 yeah but you don't deal with humidity in Phoenix!! I used to wear pants in 120 degree weather when we lived there. There's no way I'm doing that here on the upper Midwest.

@ericaraimondi I was just reading an article yesterday about baby wearing in the summer (not sure if you plan on doing that). Apparently some people will pop in an ice pack of some kind in one of the pockets. Thought that was a great idea.

  • @ericaraimondi I just moved to IL after 5 years in Tampa! I had our first kiddo there. Happy to chat about keeping kids cool
  • @LJMoon6 yes I'm sure you and your parents would love camping there! We are hoping to get a camper in the next couple years too, but similarly thinking buying will be much easier in a couple years after theyve been so popular during covid

@sunshineandlemons so much to do in Madison for sure!
  • Saskatchewan, Canada here and I am sooooo jealous of you peeps with the warm weather right now. Today it was -45C (apparently that's like -49F). Some days I wonder why I moved back from England. Lmao.
  • I live in Chicago! Born and raised in the city. Love it here, love the diversity of my neighborhood I grew up in and the one I live in now. Both inner city. but it’s definitely expensive out here. My husband is from Maine so we get lots of east coast time AND my in laws live in Ontario Canada near the US border.
  • @peppylilfoxy How long were you in England and what part? I fantasize about living there in the summers and here during the school year. Even if it would only happen one year I’d be so happy
  • @peppylilfoxy Holy smokes! And here I am upset that it's 15 degrees Fahrenheit (-10c). I don't know how you do that, it sounds miserable.

@tuxielove93  Your advice while being indoors sounds like a win win. A cool baby, bonding time, and more skin to skin! Thank you for the recommendations :-)
  • @melanier26 I lived and taught in London. My school was in North London but I supply taught all over for a month. My first month living there, I was in the Tottenham Court area and then I ended up finding a flat in Collier's Wood, which is one tube stop from Wimbledon.  I also had some friends in Northern England. They lived in Scarborough, near York.
  • I live in Texas. It is not my favorite. One day we hope to leave lol
  • We moved to Northern Wisconsin when the housing market got crazy in 2020. We started a homestead and we homeschool in our school house in the woods. We've always been homeschoolers so when we found our school house we knew it had to be ours so we moved 3 hours north. It's weird being far away from family, but it's so peaceful up here!

I do miss the bigger cities, we used to be an hour away from Milwaukee and Madison and would do our shopping there and go to the museums every other week. We're also so much further away from Chicago. The only trade off is that we're closer to the Twin Cities than we were, but it's the same distance as Milwaukee or Madison is now.
  • Also from Chicago! In the NW part of the city, basically the burbs, but in walking distance to the train. We just bought our first home in July and are excited to have a yard and not share walls with anyone.

@runnergirl2018 how are you doing with this ice? I was able to get out before it started yesterday. Not all our neighbors are shoveling/salting, and my running partner is mostly good about not chasing squirrels… so it can be treacherous.
  • @bunbaker725 the ice has been nuts! i just haven't left the house this weekend and am hoping for the best to get to work tomorrow. we've had to salt our driveway and steps multiple times this weekend.

    @lilirunning34 What part of Texas?
  • I live in a suburb of Dallas, TX.  I got my screen name from when I was pregnant with my first 5 years ago. We were living in the Cayman Islands then, gave birth in Dominican Republic.  Moved to the US shortly after.

    I hate the cold weather!
  • Born and raised in California(which is where all of my family still lives) but moved to Charlotte, NC and lived there for a while then my husband’s company transferred him to the Triad part of North Carolina so here we are lol I miss Charlotte. A lot.
  • @caymanmel I’m in the burbs of DFW too!
