Hypothyroid in pregnancy

Hi all,

I am 10 weeks along, and just found out I have hypothyroidism. I have had no previous thyroid issues. And in my last pregnancy I had no issues what so ever. This time around I am nauseous,  dizzy, light headed, zero energy, etc. I am hoping that once my thyroid is back in check I will be too.

I wanted to know if anyone else out there has had thyroid issues with their pregnancy?

Re: Hypothyroid in pregnancy

  • I have dealt with hypothyroidism for 15 years but it’s especially important to treat in pregnancy. During pregnancy I go every 4 weeks to my endocrinologist and my dosage changes every time. It’s manageable and it’ll likely take several weeks to feel normal ish but I don’t think I even know what normal feels like anymore.

  • I had minor hypothyroidism in my first pregnancy, and just like you I had no prior issues. For me it resolved itself after the baby was born, and did not recur with my second pregnancy. We'll see if I have it again this time. I hope you feel better once it is being managed!

  • I have hoshimoto which is when you immune system attacks your thyroid. Basically at this point my thyroid isn’t functioning. When I had my son 6 years ago I didn’t know I had hoshimoto but I was on synthroid throughout that pregnancy and I was fine just had to monitor it. Now that I’m 6 years older it is taking awhile to get my thyroid under control this pregnancy. I’m 10 weeks this week and already had to change my dosage 3 times. I’m up to taking 9 pills a week.

My recommendation is find a good endocrinologist that can monitor you. With my hoshimoto I have a different threshold my numbers need to be at. The fact that I did not know this my first time around and my son has no complications from it makes me feel okay that it is taking a little longer to get under control. Also be sure to also have them check your T4.
  • This is excellent advice. I had an overactive thyroid in high school, but they gave me radioactive iodine because an underactive thyroid is easier for doctors to treat. I have been taking iodine sublingual drops, but I think I should see an endocrinologist too.
  • I’m taking dessicated thyroid for hypo thyroid. I’ve struggled with it since having my twins unfortunately. I was on synthroid and it basically stopped working! I love my new stuff
  • @mamato4arrows I was wondering about taking that! My doctor doesn't think it'll do anything, but I've been on the same dose of levothyroxine for about 6 years, with no improvement in the way I feel or energy.
  • @bridgiebee82 do they monitor you during pregnancy? My Lev dose changes constantly when I’m pregnant. Its so obnoxious because I never feel normal.

  • @and_peggy I've never had a baby before so I am sure they'll he monitoring more closely. I just wonder if it will change because I'm also taking an iodine supplement.
  • I’m taking ancestral supplements dessicated thyroid, it’s not big pharma so they don’t “get it”y hair is finally not falling out again. You can find on Amazon or their website. Don’t stop yours, slowly transition and see how you do, or wait til after pregnancy if you feel more comfortable:)
  • Hi! I just got diagnosed with sub clinical hypothyroidism based on a yearly blood test that my general doc gives me. My OB seemed surprised and put me on levothyroxine. It’s odd because I have had no symptoms unless they are being masked by pregnancy symptoms .
  • @melissaell good to monitor it. A lot of hypothyroid symptoms are similar to pregnancy issues - cold, weight gain, dry skin, and exhaustion. It’s very important to be on the meds though so glad they caught it.
