What my pregnant self is eating - January.

I thought I'd get a thread started. Looking for ideas of good things before all my aversions start and I'm only eating crackers.

Anyone have any good quick meal ideas that involve cooking meat without seeing or smelling it really? In 2 or 3 weeks I won't even be able to walk down the meat aisle without gagging. It's my biggest aversion and normally I would make my husband grill outside where I can't see or smell it, but we live in a tiny apartment without outdoor storage for this pregnancy.

  • You could always do crockpot meals if you have the time, so you won't really have to prepare/cook any meat! I recently tried the Crockpot Olive Garden Chicken and it was so good! Or you could use an instant pot if you have one. I'm trying to plan all of my favorite meals for the next couple of weeks before I start getting food aversions too! Last pregnancy, the only thing I could eat for weeks was a chicken sandwich from Chick-Fil-A.

  • @jhysmath can you look at meat if it's pre-cooked? If you have any freezer space, brown up some hamburger now and freeze. then you won't have to have the smell of raw meat cooking.  The frozen food and meat aisles were the worst and even when I wasn't pregnant anymore I would sometimes feel nauseous just remembering when they made me nauseous🤦‍♀️ also, if you like chili, it freezes really well and has a lot of protein.
  • @whitta1015 I just got an Instant pot, so I'm learning to use it and hoping it will be a grand changer. My first pregnancy all I ate for weeks was blts. I bought lettuce and cooked up a bunch of bacon this weekend just in case it hits me soon.

@babywii cooked meat isn't as bad, but hamburger is one of my biggest aversions and my husband's favorite food. I'm going to try and freeze half a lasagna this week but chili sounds like a good idea to freeze too. I had gestational diabetes with my first pregnancy and likely my second even though I passed by gtt so I really need to focus on protein in the first trimester, I read somewhere there's a study that women who ate more protein the first trimester had a lower chance of getting gestational diabetes.
  • I am either eating everything in sight, or hardly anything at all. If I wait too long in between eating, I get nauseous and it’s hard to eat then. I don’t have any real food aversions yet, but burger was a huge one for me last time I was pregnant. I do eat goldfish crackers every single day lol.
  • @jhysmath ooo lasagna is a good idea! I think I need to completely fill our mini chest freezer with ready preped meals. Last pregnancy I was completely out of commission for months! I remember being so proud of myself when I felt good enough to cut carrots and watermelon by myself for a snack. I really hope this go around is better. Super interesting about the GD though. I didn't have last time but my sister has had with her last 2. 🤞🏼 You're good this time!
  • Lunch today is a little bit of jalapeno rice, broccoli w/cheese, sauteed mushrooms, blueberries, and blackberries.

You could always try some plant-based meals!! More plants can only be a good thing. We love beans over rice- it’s so easy and if you start by sautéing onions and green bell pepper (I buy them chopped and frozen, huge time saver) until browned and add a healthy portion of olive oil- any beans will be amazing. Add some chopped garlic after the beans go in and season with garlic powder, salt, maybe a bay leaf, onion powder. My dad stopped cooking beans with bacon and told me to just add more oil, and I was really surprised at how good of a substitute it is. I’m from Louisiana, so beans and rice is a a speciality.

One more plant-based option is tacos! These are our favorite version:
We use black lentils (slightly difficult to find, but we are addicted and order them on nuts.com) - they cook in 15 minutes and have tons of folic acid. Add cheese, green onions, fresh jalapeños and a leafy green - usually kale mixed with a Mexican Caesar style dressing. We like these on a soft corn tortilla. And of course add some hot sauce before eating. I honestly can’t tell you how tasty these things are. The key is really the Mexican Caesar. You can make your own by mixing taco sauce with Caesar. Taco sauce and ranch is good too! I guess it is really just a salad converted to a taco, but tacos are way more fun!
  • @shebbycat great alternatives thank you! I also plan on asking my OB next week as my normal fish intake is normally raw sushi lol can’t do that anymore obviously so that 100% will be my first meal post-birth!!!
  • @breelock I totally understand!! One thing I REALLY missed in my first pregnancy was tuna salad. Not really something I expected? Lol. Sushi too! I will say avacado rolls did grow on me.
  • Yesterday for dinner I just had to have Taco Bell soft tacos with hot sauce. And then at 9:51 P.M. I couldn't sleep because I had to have a grilled cheese right then.

I did NOT have these kind of cravings with my daughter, so it's throwing me for a loop. No morning sickness yet, but I'm expecting it soon (I'm 5w1d and it started at 5w2d with my daughter).

  • Sending the boy person out for Long Silver's for the second time this week.  I *need* that fried fish and they have the BEST green beans.

  • just sent DH out for Chick fil a! My last pregnancy, I had GD, so from 28 weeks onward, I had an extremely strict diet. I'm enjoying eating whatever I want for now, in case I end up with GD again this time around. Fingers crossed that I don't!
  • No hate chicken for me! But fried is tasty.

  • @theblondebump I had gd with my first and not with my second. With my second we also had the stay at home orders for my third trimester and I chose to bake with my toddler pretty much every day for something fun to do. I ate way too much carbs and way too many milk shakes. Not sure if maybe I really did have gd because I ended up with a 10lb baby. I plan on trying to keep to the diet once I'm out of the nauseous period ends.
  • I had a doctors appointment one week before finding out I was pregnant. We found out my cholesterol is a bit high (the bad kind). So, she was already trying to encourage some good habits including getting me to eat fish (I never have eaten fish ever. I have a huge aversion to it going all the way back to childhood.) A week later, when I told her I was pregnant, she again encouraged me to eat more fish. I want to try. My husband is an amazing cook and we do have a grill outside so he can cook fish there without me smelling it. He’s going to look at the list my doctor sent about what fish to avoid and what fish are good to eat in pregnancy and pick the least fishy ones. I trust him, but I really hate fish. I figure this might not fly once morning sickness kicks in (around 6 weeks last time for me). So I’ve got one week-ish to try to get good nutrition in! Last time I could only eat lentils and tangerines once I started feeling sick!
  • @jhysmath I love hearing about people who had GD in one pregnancy and not in the next, gives me hope!!

@magnolia209 good luck with the fish! I personally love cod and halibut, I find them to be very mild fish, easy to pan sear or bake!
  • I’m not sure if it’s nerves or my body changing, but my appetite is like nonexistent. I don’t feel sick, just nothing sounds good. Even with delicious food in front of me I still can’t really eat much. I’m only 4 weeks. It was emotionally exhausting telling my parents so I think nerves got the best of me this week!
  • All I want is chicken patties, V8 juice, hard boiled eggs, and chopped salads

    sounds very protein-y and iron-y

  • @theblondebump I think my gd is more related to stress as each test I failed I was driving during a snow storm. I've taken the 1 hour with having a can of soda first and still passed. I also think managing it with diet as long as I had good protein it didn't get too high. I just need to focus on eating better so I don't have another 10 lb baby and I can try for a vba2c at my hospital. I've been wanting to deliver in their new birth center since my first and they delayed opening by a month so I missed it.

@magnolia209 I personally grew up on and love fish. I personally think haddock or cod are nice and mild. They can be made into yummy fish tacos too. Make a little slaw to put on top and grill a corn tortilla. So good.
  • @jhysmath good luck avoiding the stress and GD this time around! And fingers crossed for vbac for you!
  • Currently eating a most tasty conconction of my own making - green beans mixed with daal masala with some bacon added.

It was totally amazing and required no effort other than cooking the bacon.

  • So I've had my first craving ever. I really thought the whole idea of cravings were really just crazy pregnant people who want something so they say it's a craving. I've only had aversions with all 3 of my pregnancies. Today I just kept wanting buffalo sauce. To the point of my husband wasn't ok with us going out, I was just going to pour hot sauce over whatever we would make for dinner. We shared two boneless buffalo chicken apps, and then I got a buffalo chicken wrap. It was very strange to me.
  • @jhysmath Same, girl. I didn't have any really strong cravings when pregnant with my daughter, but this time I keep craving either cheese or hot sauce. It's unreal!

  • Today when I got back from my run I was thinking some Greek yogurt sounded good for the calcium and protein, but I’ve also been leaning hard toward salty / spicy as opposed to sweet. I decided on making a yogurt dip with harissa seasoning, lime juice, salt and pepper. It was divine with carrot sticks and pretzels.
  • @jhysmath same for me with enchilada sauce! Been thinking of making a big batch to freeze so I can just have it on anything whenever.
  • A Buffalo chicken wrap sounds really good! So does a Buffalo sandwich from the Subway. Dinner possibilities!

  • I’m on the Mexican train! I find the spicy food sort of neutralizes nausea 🤔😋
  • I’m definitely leaning towards spicy things right now! Sriracha sauce on everything! With my son, it was the same before the morning sickness started. Weirdly, I couldn’t handle spice at all after giving birth. For several months! It’s definitely a hormone thing!
  • @jhysmath
I ended up snagging a buffalo chicken sub from subway on the way home.  It sounded better than it tasted (too much buffalo sauce, not enough ranch)...the meatball sub I got to go with it (it was buy 1, get 1 50% off) on the other hand, was super tasty.

  • @kboydbowman subway buffalo sub was also on my if he doesn't want to get food maybe I'll sneak over there while he picks up the kids 😂
  • I had my first food aversion the other day with salmon. I love salmon! But I cooked it and the smell made me so nauseous. I was so upset. Lol
  • I have sent the boy person for Thai.
