Are mobiles practical?

Do you really use your mobile? I'm having a really hard time finding one I like so am thinking of either not using one or making my own.  Thoughts?

Has anyone ever made one before?  If so, do you have any advice/suggestions?  I'm hoping a craft store (like Michaels or Hobby Lobby) will have the mechanism and I can just make the "dolls" out of leftover bedding fabric.

    A friend of mine who has a little one said that if I get a mobile to get the motorized kind - not the wind up kind.  The wind up ones stop playing after about 90 seconds, and then her son starts whining - so it's really more trouble than it's worth.  But she said the motorized ones are great!

    Just an FYI - be careful what kind of mobile you get.  We bought a mobile for our crib, and it didn't fit because of the way our crib was designed.  My MIL had also purchased a mobile and crib display, and neither of them fit.  Just make sure it will fit on the railings.

    I'm not sure how practical I think a traditional wind up mobile with stuffed type decorations hanging from it is.  BUT, I do know that we sacrificed our style and went with a motorized sound and light Fisher Price Rainforest mobile to put in our ds's darling vintage racecar room, and I was never sorry.  Yes, it didn't "match", but that thing really soothed him, he loved it, and fell asleep happily many a night watching the lights and listening to the music.  I was sad when it was time for it to go, I had relied on it so much.

    I'm going with a modern forest theme and couldn't find any cool mobiles so I decided to make my own. I went to Macys and found some thick plastic branches which I'm gonna tie fishing line to secure them hanging in various directions and then searched for lifelike birds which I'll be glueing to the ends and middle of the branches.  Hope it works out the way I'm envisioning! GL!!!
