The Registry Thread!

I don't think we have a registry thread yet, but I really can't remember :D .

I thought it would be helpful for first time moms to set up a thread all about registries. Second time moms can share input and answer any questions. Here are some questions (for those of us who have had registries already) to get started:

1. Where did you register? Any specific reason why?

2. What were your must have items? Think about items you would recommend to other moms.

3. What did you not end up using?

4. Any other tips/ words of advice?

First time moms, feel free to ask any questions you have!

Re: The Registry Thread!

  • 1. Where did you register? Any specific reason why?
I registered at Amazon and Target to make it easy. I knew my family would have access to at least one of them. I thought about Baby List but that seemed a little too new at the time.

    2. What were your must have items? Think about items you would recommend to other moms.
First, register for everything. You never know what someone will want to splurge on. Then if you don't get it, you will at least get the completion discount. Things I loved and would register for again:
    - SnuggleMe
    - FridaBaby Windii
    - Muslin burp cloths
    - velcro swaddles
    - Baby Bum Brush for diaper cream
    bouncer
    - Activity table
    - BIBS pacifiers were our favorite but every baby is different

    3. What did you not end up using?
We never had a wipe warmer or baby monitor and didn't see the need. We did have a simple activity mat but I really don't think you need one. Just a blanket and some black and white cards would work. We hated the highchair we chose. It is impossible to clean. Do not get the Joovy Nook highchair.

    4. Any other tips/ words of advice?
Don't overthink it. I spent way too much time overthinking every detail with my first and the reality is that they don't care about the fancy stuff.

  • 1. Where did you register? Any specific reason why? Target and Amazon - great free gifts and discounts for after

    2. What were your must have items? Think about items you would recommend to other moms.
    Hatch
    Love to dream swaddle
    Zarbees soothing chest rub
So peep extra large car mirror (returned others before finding this one)

    3. What did you not end up using?
    I hated the Velcro swaddles
    barely used baby monitor
    Sleepers with snaps

    4. Any other tips/ words of advice?
I’d have any medical/sick day things in house before baby gets here, you don’t want to have to scramble and be extra stressed when baby is sick
    Lilypie Pregnancy tickers
  • 1. Where did you register? Any specific reason why? Amazon, Target, it was a pandemic pregnancy so it needed to be very easy to order/return online.

    2. What were your must have items? Think about items you would recommend to other moms.
A breastfeeding stool. I thought the footrest with my glider would work but it was too high, I needed something about the height of a large dictionary, so a short stool was perfect. Made a big difference for me. But you can definitely just stack books.

Merlin sleep suit, we used this when we transitioned out of swaddles and it worked great

lots of nursing bras and a hands free pumping bra

sound machine (we love our Hatch)

    3. What did you not end up using?
Bibs, we found he was covered in milk/food anyway so why bother.

Pacifiers, DS never liked them (but I’m not opposed to them)

    Bottle warmer

    4. Any other tips/ words of advice?

Don’t get mentally attached to any item helping you out. Every swaddle swears it’s a game changer. But your baby will determine what he/she likes and you’ll determine what actually makes life easier for you. Make use of neighborhood groups, poshmark, etc, to buy used versions of items you want to try. Some cities have baby wearing groups that will let you rent carriers to decide what you and baby like before you purchase.

  • 1. Where did you register? Any specific reason why? No registry because I didn't have showers, but I'll answer the other questions since we were still gifted things from friends:)

    2. What were your must have items? Think about items you would recommend to other moms.
    Sleep Sacks
Baby Thermometer (I like the one that goes in the ear)
    Faucet protector for the bath

    3. What did you not end up using?
Swaddles (just never used them and never needed them...plus my girls weren't fans from day 1)
    Pacifiers (same as swaddles)
    Boppy
Sleepers with zippers (unless they were 2 way zips or zipped from the top down...then they were good)
    Baby food blender
I did not use a monitor with my first, but used it often with my second
Didn't use a bouncer with my first but used multiple ones with my second
Didn't use Burp cloths with my first but needed a million with my second

    4. Any other tips/ words of advice?
My 2 girls were total opposites, so what we used for one we didn't really use for the other, and what one loved the other hated. They were completely different babies. So just because other people loved/hated or used/didn't use certain things it in no way means you'll use or even like the same things. I found it was all about trial and error. Don't feel bad if you get stuff and don't end up using it, because if you have another baby you might end up getting use out of it after all! We didn't use/need/buy much with my first and honestly didn't miss anything...but found I used/needed/bought a lot more stuff with my second.

  • 1. Where did you register? Any specific reason why?
We registered with Target and Amazon. Target for the goodie bag and coupon they give, Amazon was more about convenience for anyone that did look at the registry as it’s used so handily by people used to shopping online. I know you get a bonus if you have Prime, but we don’t.

    2. What were your must have items? Think about items you would recommend to other moms.
Boppy/ My Brest Friend Pillow- for me this made all the difference when learning to breastfeed in the hospital I was so sore and the pillows from the bed felt like they were slipping away, I was worried I wouldn’t make it. I got home and strapped on the my brest friend and that feed went perfect. DS already had a good latch, but it was what I needed. It was so handy not to have to chase the pillow and it had a pocket for lanolin cream which was also great early on in moving room to room. We transitioned to the boppy when he got bigger somewhere around 4 months because he had a habit of getting distracted/ fussy rubbing his foot along the my brest friend’s strap, but honestly both pillows did a lot for me.

Baby Monitor that was more than a “walkie talkie”: For me this was just a preference, but being PGAL I was super anxious and the comfort of being able to see him on a monitor and know he was okay has helped. I originally wanted an Owlet, but those were out of our price range. The Infant Optics monitor though has served us well.

    3. What did you not end up using?

Mittens- couldn’t even find them in this house when I did want them and went with socks.

Swaddles- DH swaddled a bit in the very beginning, but we found wearable blankets to be better.

Like 50% of the clothes we were given. Especially the small sizes.
I know newborns can have a lot of accidents, but they also grow so fast. It felt like it wasn’t long and I was sadly packing away tiny outfits he never even got to try on.

    4. Any other tips/ words of advice?
Don’t go overboard on baby clothes and if you get too many try not to feel guilty about the ones they didn’t wear.

As most have said, I will echo every baby is different. I’ve only experienced my son, but I’ve seen the difference in him and my nieces. You will find what works for you.
Maybe your baby will love being swaddled, maybe you’ll want a boppy and maybe you won’t.
Though what I would recommend is if you’re unsure about stuff like a boppy and if you have a friend who has one, see if they’ll lend it to you so you can give it a try to see if you like it.

Also have breast pads, because when the milk comes it, it can be brutal. I can remember the early days getting ready to shower and discovering I had milk running all the way down to my legs… lol
  • 1. Where did you register? Any specific reason why?
target (good return policy, store close by)
buy buy baby (good selection of items)

    2. What were your must have items? Think about items you would recommend to other moms.
    - Baby Bjorn bouncer - folds flat, easy to transport
    - baby carriers - ringsling and standard Tula
    - burt’s bees burp cloths - I loved these because they were thick and the way they are sewn they fold nicely to be put away
    - baby monitor
    - muslin blankets to lay on the floor for tummy time - having multiple is useful because you can easily swap them out when baby spits up
    - Hatch sound machine
    - an elevated place to change a diaper on the first and second floor of our house (we used a Joovy room pack and play on our first floor and loved it)
    - place to keep things I need while feeding baby nearby: I used a basket and a side table to hold burp cloths, snacks, breast pads,
    - nursing tank tops
    - two nursing pillows - one for the first floor and one for the second floor so we would never have to carry them up and down the stairs.

    3. What did you not end up using?
Nose Frida (pandemic baby who never left the house 🤦‍♀️)

    4. Any other tips/ words of advice?
Take some time to buy or prepare things for YOUR recovery and postpartum period. Padsicles, peri bottle, breast pads, a few options for nursing clothing, your favorite drinks and snacks, a cozy space to be while you feed baby, etc.

  • What’s your fave diaper bags? Bonus if they are the tote type. I think the backpack type isn’t my ideal thing. I like the space and size.

@313Meg I got the backpack diaper bag from Beis on black Friday and love it! They have a tote version too. They are expensive but the quality is really good and they don't scream diaper bag to me. I wish I had gotten mine when my first was born.
  • @313Meg I ended up buying a secondhand Maedn Carryall bag off Mercari a few months ago and have been using it. Love it. You can remove the backpack straps and use the handles or a long crossbody strap if you prefer.
  • @night_nurse thats so cute!!
  • @313Meg I LOVE mine but the company that made them discontinued it right when DD2 was born...so I bought 2 in different colours that year. It's a canvas messenger style type bag that is completely waterproof on the inside. It doesn't look like a diaper bag which is why I love it. But I honestly just mostly use my larger cross body LaCoste purse/bag that I used to use for traveling since it holds everything I need anyways:) Pretty sure it's considered vintage now since I've had it for like 20 years...but it still looks brand new and carries everything I need including an outside pocket for drinks/bottles for the kids:) Plus it's not very bulky so it's convenient to wear everywhere.
  • @313Meg I love the JuJuBe line! I have their backpack, fuel cell, tote bag, and some of their smaller bags for organization. A plus is that they're all machine washable. The Be Light (tote bag) is great for travel since it's less structured, since it can be rolled up and then be used to go out and about. I am actually thinking of getting a Super Be since it's much larger!
