First Ultrasound

so excited to go get my ultrasound done at 8 weeks, but when we tried to do it the nurse looks at my husband and I, says that nothing is there but a sac! I about went into panic mode but the nurse said it looks as if the sac is only 6weeks. Had blood work done that afternoon and got results saying the hcg is at 30,000 but the nurse told us that I could anywhere between 5-12 weeks. More blood work to be done on Monday to see if it rises.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Re: First Ultrasound

  • Were you charting? Do you know the day that you actually ovulated vs. when you think you ovulated? Charting and knowing the exact day of ovulation is the only way to know whether or not you were actually 8 weeks when your first ultrasound was done. If you're just going by your LMP, then the ultrasound could be showing correctly and you may not actually be far enough along to see anything on the ultrasound.

  • My LMP was sept 9. Ovulation was between sept 20-24. On oct 4 I thought I was starting my period because I had a light spotting but never started.
  • Yes I have been charting LMP since Aug 2013
  • Charting your LMP is not charting your ovulation. Charting ovulation means taking your basal body temperature each morning as soon as you wake up and putting that data into a chart which will track when you ovulate based on the fluctuations in your body temperature.

If you are not charting your ovulation, there is no sure way to know exactly when you ovulated, even if you got a positive OPK. Spotting on October 4 could have been from ovulation, which seems as though that lines up better with what the ultrasound showed.

  • If u wasn't temping... You very well could have been off.
  • I figure the spotting was a sign of starting my period because I was due for my period the next day.
  • The only true way to know that your period will be arriving is to know the exact day you ovulated via charting, the exact length of your luteal phase, and by having a significant temp drop the last day of your luteal phase.

  • I have been charting my LMP cycles since August 2013. And doing the calculations on the webmd ovulation calendar. Once I started charting it would tell my ovulation times and then when I should start. Since I have been doing that when it would tell me I should start on a certain day, and I would start on that day.
  • I have also only been charting LMP for the last year and a half; the app I'm using has been pretty much dead on for the period predictor based on my previous cycles. I know this isn't accurate for ovulation but I think it's better than no charting at all! I go for my first appointment this Wednesday, I will be 8w2d, according to my LMP, however, I suppose I could be measuring differently depending on when I ovulated. Ovulation and cycles can change from month to month, depending on a number of different things. Even if you have a "regular cycle" as in the same number of days and same days of period, you could still ovulate later or earlier than the 2 week norm.

  • I had this exact problem on Friday also. I was supposed to be exactly 7 weeks so they were looking for a heartbeat. The tech said there is a yolk and what looks like the heart growing but no heart beat yet. They took blood and I'm also going back Monday to make sure my numbers are rising and not decreasing. This happened to my sister and my sisters best friend and they both gave birth to healthy babies. I am praying I am in the same boat and that my baby did not stop developing. I hope you are too! Good luck!

Were you taking your basal body temperature every morning? If the answer is no, then you were not charting. You may have been tracking your periods and when online calendars believe you would ovulate, but that is not the same as charting. Ovulation calendars cannot tell you when you ovulated. Only charting your basal body temperature can do that. And you only ovulate once per cycle, so there is no such thing as "ovulation times."

Also, just because your period would arrive "on time" every other month, doesn't mean that it was going to this month. It sounds to me that you don't really understand how your body works. You should consider reading more about your menstrual cycle and exactly what happens. There is a book called Taking Charge of Your Fertility that is a great resource.

  • Taking charge of your fertility is a great resource! I struggled to get pregnant for years, even saw doctors, but the only think I used was the ovulation calendars. To my surprise, when I started temping and recording that, I ovulated almost 10 full days later than those charts ever gave me!

The good news is that it's very possible you ovulated late. I hope you get good news at your next appointment!

  • Will be praying for good results for you at the next appt! If it makes you feel any better, I was 9 days behind where they thought I would be based on my LMP at my "9 week" appt (which turned out to be my 7.5 week appt). Hopefully the same will be true for you!
