1st Trimester

Terrible case of GERD

I have had a past history of GERD which has caused me to take prescription ppis in the past like Dexilant.  I am about 12 weeks pregnant and noticed my GERD has started acting up again.  I currently have myself on the BRAT diet, don’t eat before bed and make sure not to lie down after eating.  It’s constant discomfort that is causing naseau, bloating, feeling the food go back up in my esophagus and burping. It’s constant symptoms with no relief and I worry because I hear the symptoms get worse as pregnancy continues.  I am seeing my doc tomorrow and will discuss my concerns but I am wondering if others have had such bad symptoms so early in pregnancy and how they handled it.

Re: Terrible case of GERD

  • If at all possible, put your bed on a slant.  The top part of my bed is like an inch higher than the bottom part.  My husband doesn't even notice at all, and it's been amazingly helpful.
There are many PG safe GERD medications, so I'm sure your doc will discuss your concerns and be able to prescribe you something.
But I also found in early PG that eating a lot of smaller meals, and making sure I was never on an empty stomach helped me out.  Not eating a TON or overeating (as we all know that makes it soooo much worse), but just keeping something in my belly to help keep the acid down.

  • Thanks!  Did you ever try Pepcid?  That’s what my doc is prescribing.  I’m a little nervous to take meds during pregnancy tho in case there are any developmental effects
  • Yeah, that's what I'm on now.  I was a user of Zantac/Ranitidine, until they pulled it a few years ago.  I got switched to Pepcid.  Most of these types of meds are safe from my understanding.  It's the ones like Nexium and those that I think you have to be more careful of.

  • Thanks so much! Google is definitely fueling my anxiety.  I can’t believe the GERD is this bad at week 12… unreal
