Ooooh I’ll play!

I started seeing this guy in my freshman year of college. We went out on a couple dates and had only been seeing each other for maybe 2 weeks. On the last date we had, we had dinner and then went back and watched a movie in his dorm room. It was going well until he dropped an I love you between kisses. We awkwardly finished the movie, he insisted on walking me back to my dorm and then I freaked out with my roommate after he left. I’m pretty sure I texted him the next day and said that it wasn’t going to work. So awkward and cringey!

The first one that comes to mind for me is a guy I met online (I think POF, but could have been OK Cupid) who was really nice but sooo awkward. I went out with him twice, probably as some kind of punishment to myself for being called "too picky". On our 2nd date we went to Ikea to wander around because it was close to his place but still extremely public in case he was a murderer (he wasn't). At the end I got an ice cream cone and he walked me to my car. When he tried to awkwardly lean in to kiss me I didn't know what to do so I took a massive bite of ice cream, muttered something about brain freeze, kinda laughed and playfully punched his arm lightly to push him away from me, got in my car and drove away. We texted for a while after that but when he asked me out again I tried to turn him down nicely.

Oh, and my mom crashed my first "date" with my (now) husband - we were just friends at the time but we went for a drink after an event we both happened to be at, and my mom called because she was borrowing my aunt's car and couldn't figure out how to connect her phone to bluetooth and needed it done that very second. She was like "are you home now? I'm coming over". I panicked and said I wasn't home, then realized I'd have to admit where I was and who I was with, so I made up some bullshit story (that she definitely didn't buy) and she still found me at the bar near my place and came inside to look for me and did one of those "hiiiiii [husband's name], fancy seeing you here".

Similar to @gingermama29’s story!
My high school bf broke up with me within a month of homecoming and I was so sad I wouldn’t be able to go (I went to an all girls school and it was at our brother school so had to be asked to go). Another guy sorta within our friend group asked me so we went and then when he asked me to date him I felt obligated to say yes. We hadn’t even been together a month and he told me he loved me when he dropped me off at my parents’ house after seeing a movie. I swear I was quiet for 2 minutes but it was probably 10 seconds. I think I mumbled something like I’m...not there yet (it had only been like 5 weeks since my bf had broken up with me!) and awkwardly got out of the car. We maybe dated another week or 2 after that but I couldn’t deal.

As a side note, I found out several months later that he had gone tanning before homecoming and thought my favorite animal was a dolphin so he went tanning with a dolphin sticker on. He had posted a shirtless mirror selfie (yay MySpace) so I went back and looked and sure enough, there was an outline of a dolphin 😬

Cute guy asked me out freshman year of college. I didn’t know him well but yes yes because I was poor and wanted to go out to eat lol. Well I had a fake ID ordered a Long Island and he winks at the waitress and tells her to bring me an extra. Then she walks away and immediately he looks at me and says and I quote “so I’m pretty into coke, what kinda drug do you like? I probably got it in my van.” And I was a wild child but even that threw up some red flags. I told him I was going to the restroom and snuck out through the kitchen because even the waitress was like you should get away from him he’s creepy. WORST. DATE. EVER.

Not so much embarrassing but I have a couple stories that are kind of similar to @gingermama29 and @b_1029. I've had two guys get way too attached very fast. One sent a $100 Anthropologie gift card and roses to a house party I was at (that he somehow knew about but didn't know anyone there) after only hanging out with him for a couple of weeks. The other got crazy and harassed me through text message for months after I told him I didn't want to go on another date.

One of my truly embarrassing stories also had to do with a fake ID and getting busted on a date. Right as the door guy was checking my ID someone yelled my name. The door guy goes, "if your name is K* then why does your ID say Mercedes?" I just felt stupid at the time because my date really wanted to go in and we ended up having to do something else.

I don't really have a good story, but apparently I'm kind of a stalker magnet. 3 different guys from high school to post college have semi-stalked me (or at least it felt like it to me, maybe I'm just uncomfortable with attention). One called from a different number after I stopped answering his original number, one kept Facebook messaging me randomly for a couple years in college, and another was just kinda creepy and I'm pretty sure wanted to date me, and I thought I was friend zoning him because I told him *multiple* times I had a BF (DH and I were long distance at the time) and he would always ask about him, but clearly I failed 🤦‍♀️. And then a couple years later the 3rd guy randomly messaged me on FB out of nowhere. I did not respond. 😬😬

@b_1029 oh man I totally forgot about people tanning with a sticker. Girls at my high school would have little hearts on their lower abdomen all the time! Is that still trendy these days?

I really don't have any good stories with DH and I being together for so long, but our first "date" had some cringe because of my own doing haha. It was maybe 2 days before his birthday and we had gotten lunch together. I had a big crush on him so I spent AGES finding a birthday card to give him. What card is even appropriate for a friend you're crushing on??

The front of the card is just a cartoon picture showing a person holding a greeting card dashing out a store's doors with like puffy clouds coming out. Inside the card says something like "I just grab whatever card off the shelf because someone farted down the card aisle and I can only hold my breath for so long".

Ladies, he STILL has this card somewhere likely in a nightstand drawer in our room. If I find it I will definitely get a picture of it. Awkward AF that card, but he loved it anyway.

Once was nice, but I think he did it every day for a week until I was like wtf dude??? That’s pretty solid about the anthro gift card but a big wut to having it delivered to a party 😆

@kgg2241 there was a guy in high school kind of like who liked me waaaayyy more than I liked him. He probably liked that I was in our weight lifting class

. He gave me flowers randomly one day at school and it was creepy as heck. At least... I'm pretty sure it was him that put the flowers in my backpack. I was down towards the bottom of my locker grabbing books or something and when I stood back up there's this bouquet of flowers in my backpack but no one around me said anything. Some time later he basically exclaims his like/love for me and I don't know how I did it but I hardcore shut him down and said I don't want to be more than friends. Pretty solid moment of my life considering the anxiety and depression I was unknowingly dealing with in those years.

I wasn't even being flirtatious with him as there were a couple other girls so we often stuck together and spotted for each other. So it wasn't like this guy was always spotting for me and getting close

@kgg2241 for some reason I picture the rejection in the parking lot after my swim practice. Which seems normal until you learn our high school swim team was a combination of our school plus a neighboring school and practices were held at the other school because they had the pool. Our school didn't.

I've done some cringey things in the past too... there was a guy I made out with once in Uni, he was a friend of a friend. SO cute. I think I only saw him once more after that, but I had a major crush on him. I ended up buying him some extremely expensive playoff hockey tickets for his birthday, which in my defense was also between Christmas and NY so it was also kind of an xmas gift, in hopes that he'd then feel obligated to invite me. He did ask me to go with him but then my family ended up booking a vacation that same week so I had to cancel on him, and I'm pretty sure he was super uncomfortable with the idea that I just dropped several hundred bucks on someone I barely knew. Then I got drunk one night and had an entire conversation *with myself* in our chat on MSN messenger while I was pulling an all-nighter trying to finish a paper for a class so when he woke up I think he had over 300 messages of me talking to myself while he was asleep. I don't think he talked to me again after that, and I don't blame him LOL.

I don't think I have anything super cringey, but I myself was pretty cringey in high school/college. I was big into the punk rock thing, had multiple piercings, a faux hawk, wore super thick eyeliner, etc. I was dating this super nice guy in college on and off, and his roommates called me "Avril Lavigne" behind my back. It made me so mad.

Fast forward to meeting my husband. I had just moved to the South from New York and was working at a big box retail store. I had seen DH a few times (he was working there too, but in a different department) and thought he was cute but was too scared to talk to him. One day, he came up to me and asked if I'd like to go to lunch. Out of total nerves, thinking he meant like a group of people, I blurted out, "With who?" DH says he almost walked away from me right then and there lol. He just kind of looked at me like there was something wrong with me and goes, "Um...with me."

Met a guy through OK Cupid for drinks at a bar. We arrived right at the same time, both on bikes, and it turned out there was only one spot to lock them up, so we leaned our bikes against each other and locked and went in. We had one, maybe two beers, and the conversation was so. stilted. There was no chemistry (at least, not that I could feel at my end), but he didn't seem like a terrible person. Just awkward. I finally made an excuse that I needed to leave and went out to unlock my bike, but realized that he had somehow (intentionally?) locked our bikes together, so I had to go find him, still inside drinking. After he unlocked his bike it turned out that his pedals had also gotten tangled up with my spokes, and so there was an awkward few minutes of getting our bikes separated. Finally, he smiles and says, "I guess our bikes were having sex!" and then he says, "maybe should too!" and tries to kiss me. Uh, gotta go.

@kgg2241 & @inthewoods23, I don't remember ever getting random flowers in high school, but I did get a random ankle bracelet once. This guy was a couple of years younger than me and he gave me an ankle bracelet that said "sexy" on it. I don't remember how he delivered it, but he definitely didn't give it to me personally. Then, he called a friend of mine to have her to call me to tell me to call him so that he could ask me out.

By far my most cringey "date" ever though was the time I somehow unintentionally found myself on a date with one of H's friends... while H and I were dating. We had all gone as a group to this music festival with a number of different bands playing at the same time in different spots. H and a few of his friends wanted to go see a particular band that was playing at the same time as a band that I wanted to see. No big deal, I was totally fine with splitting up temporarily and going on my own. On the way there, one of H's friends (let's call him John) offers to come with me instead. I wasn't a super huge fan of John to begin with and would much rather have gone solo, but before I could respond H goes "oh yeah, that sounds like a good idea" so now I'm stuck with John. We get there and John decides we should immediately split from the group so that we can "get good seats" except that we don't go to the stage. Instead, he detours to a vendor tent, buys me an expensive drink (the first of many that he ended up buying me despite me never asking or implying that I wanted one), and proceeds to spend the next like hour shit talking H and trying to play himself up. Then, we finally get over by the stage and I am trying to just enjoy my concert and gtfo of there. John keeps talking about how he could probably get us back stage and disappears for like a half hour (fine by me). He comes back with a t-shirt and autographed set list that he bought for me. I booked it back to the rest of the group as soon as the show was over. Explaining to H just how good of a "friend" John was to him was interesting, but I think that incident ultimately was the final nail in the coffin for their friendship because they stopped talking shortly after that.

I think my most cringe-y was maybe partly my fault. On my Match profile I wrote how I can sometimes come across as serious but that I have a super cheesy personality, love all the dumb cheeseball stuff like stuffed animals, balloons, chocolates. If it’s stereotypically girly and overly cute, I’m interested.

I show up at a first date with a guy and I see a bunch of balloons on the patio but don’t think anything of it, somebody must be throwing a party. Nope. The host looks at me when I give my name, smirks, and brings me to a table with 10 helium balloons, a dozen roses, a box of chocolates, and a stuffed teddy bear decorating the table. I was so stunned and it was so awkward I was desperate to leave. The worst part was when he walked me to the car with all the stuff and everyone would stop us and say, “awww, how sweet” and crap. I drove a VW Golf so getting 10 balloons inside was a comedy of errors. I nearly killed myself driving home and ended up pulling over to release the balloons a few miles away from the restaurant. I immediately took that paragraph off my profile.

@inthewoods23 one lady asked if it was our anniversary and I just had this deer-in-the-headlights stare that hopefully communicated HELL NO. It was actually creepy in a way because he was clearly pissed when I didn’t hug him and when I refused to tell him when I was free next. He definitely read my profile, decided if he bought X, Y, Z I’d definitely be his girlfriend and then he was mad when I turned him down. 🙄

This is a great way to pass a Monday afternoon 😂

I think my worst was in college. I was interviewing for an internship and a senior that completed the internship the year before was part of the team. Apparently we had a class together and long story short he asked me to dinner. During our hour and a half dinner, he asked me not only about religion and how our families would get along but also about how many kids I wanted and if we agreed about how to raise them. I was 21 at the time, so hard pass. I wanted to ask him if he had ever dated before. He walked also super rude to the wait staff which is personally such a turn off. Dude, its a Friday night and its freaking Outback, chill.

Runner up though is for sure, first 2 dates with DH. we met briefly through mutual friends and then spent a year texting. He lived several hours away and would drive through town on his way to his parents for holidays. NO ONE talks about how awkward it is to meet someone in person that you know so well through a phone. I swear we sat in silence for half of dinner. I swore him off, it was so bad....but one wedding for said mutual friends and lots of whiskey and here we are

I was serially single for most of my 20's (I didn't really mind), but I went on lots of dates, most of them guys I'd met online (POF, Match, Lavalife, Tinder towards the end of it... you name it!) I like to say that I started online dating when online dating was still considered something only desperate people did. I didn't care. Anyways, at some point, I was going on so many ridiculous / awkward, ergo funny, dates, that I started writing a blog because it was annoying to keep telling my different friend groups the same story over and over. There were some really good ones:

1) Guy who asked me on our first date if I was a virgin
2) Guy who couldn't find our meeting spot for 1 hour (we had decided to go on a hike in a local state park); I ended up tell him to just meet me at a bar in the city. But like Dude... you heard of Google Maps (it was already a thing back then)
3) A guy would wanted to go on a date on Saturday afternoon because he lived in the suburbs but worked downtown, and worked "off hours" to avoid traffic, and so he couldn't stay in the city in the evening because he had to be up early to restart his routine (I was really into this guy because he would make me video messages instead of just typing stuff)
4) The list goes on...

But perhaps the most mortifying moment was when I was in summer camp, between grades 7 and 8 and I developed a HUGE crush on this guy. I was SOOOOO shy then too. And then we went camping, and there were port-a-potties at the campsite, and this one didn't properly lock, and I flung the door of a port-a-potty open, and there was my crush, sitting on the shitter. 🙈

I lived in a big city in TX with a great social scene. I was out with friends when I met this guy who acted enamored with me the moment we spoke. He insisted on taking me on a date the very next night because he was “so excited to get to know” me.

He decided on a late-evening dinner due to his hectic schedule. I met him at the sushi restaurant that he chose. I ordered food but he did not.🤔 He kept checking his phone and saying that the movers were due at his house at any moment. Excuse me? At 10 o’clock at night? He said he was moving early the next morning to another big city in TX, but he didn’t want to let the chance slip by of forming a connection with me so that we could continue to date long-distance if this all went well. Ummm, ok Mr. Presumptuous.... My food arrives and he seems so anxious to meet the movers that I take a few bites and ask for my food to be packaged to go. (Hey, free dinner, y’all!) I chalk it up to him just being weird and something seeming not quite right, avoid his goodnight kiss and just keep it moving.

The next day I meet my girlfriends for brunch at a trendy restaurant and I tell them all about the bizarro date. We are laughing coming up with all the possibilities of what could really be going on behind his ridiculous story of the movers. I am headed to the restroom when lo and behold, who do I walk past but my date—sitting cozily at a table with a pretty girl with an engagement ring on her finger. 💍 Busted! 😆 I pause just long enough at their table with a huge smile and say brightly to him, “Heeeeey! Great to see you!” so he knew he got caught and she would ask him who I was and could watch him stumble for some BS response. Karma is a b.
