Babies: 0 - 3 Months

We're adopting- a little advice?

We just got placed with a birthmom (Yippee!!!) but we have to spend around 3 weeks to a month in the state where the baby is born.  What are the must haves that we need to make sure we have with us (other then  diaps, bottles and formula).  I'm trying to avoid packing the whole nursery or buying everything there and having to get it all home.

Thanks very much!

  • For the first 3 weeks to a month you don't need much.   Sleepers, swaddling blankets, maybe a sling.   Some babies only like to sleep upright, but you won't know that until you get there so i would forgo buying any swings or anything until you find out.

  • Oh, and Congratulations!

  • Congratulations!  How exciting!  I would definitely bring a portable bassinet, bouncy seat and bath tub/accessories.
  • ditto on everything pp said.. and also Congrats!!  :)
  • A sling is a great idea-- A good way to bond with baby!
  • Congratulations! Mylicon-gas drops, they saved us the first night home, blankets, swaddle me, cozy jammies, bouncer, easy food and snacks for you. =)
  • I think the previous ladies covered it, but I wanted to say CONGRATS!  How exciting!
  • Car seat, somewhere for them to sleep, clothes, I would get some type of wing or chair, you dont really want to have to hold them all the time or put them in the car seat or crib/bassinette. Thats all I can really think of. The only things we had when DS came home were is pack n play with the bassinette, his car seat (had the stroller but it was in storage), a bouncy seat, clothes, bibs, pampers, formula, bottles (only had a few maybe 5 at the most). HTH! Where will you have to be for the birth?

  • Car seat, sleepers, blankets/swaddlers.  I'd get a travel size baby wash and a couple of washclothes.  We didn't use any sort of swing/carrier/etc for the 1st 3 weeks.

    Good luck, and congratulations!

  • Lots of sleepers, they're the easiest.  And I couldn't have made it without the swaddle me - but I know not all babies like this.  A few receiving blankets, and maybe a travel swing that won't take up much room.  Congrats on the new baby - we hope to adopt in two years, I can't wait!
  • Congratulations on your wonderful news!

Depending on where you are staying, you may want a pack n play.  We have traveled seeral times, including two hotel stays, and our PNP w/ diaper changer has been terrific.

  • Thank you all!  I appreciate the help.  We;re going to get the car seat when we get there and I guess a swing, too!  Yikes, time to make a list!
  • Definitely - several outifts (the baby will pee on everything), couple packs of sensitive wipees and diapers (you go through about 15 every day), several burp cloths, several blankets, a few changes of bedding, several bottles with slow flow nipples, a car seat with a head stabilizer.

Perhaps - a wipee warmer (my son HATES cold wipes),  a boppy, a bottle warmer.

This is a good list. CONGRATS! Thats so awesome. I can't wait until you start posting all your baby stories. Take a camera too.

  • CONGRATS!  That is so exciting, I am happy for you!

One of the big things is just having a place to put the baby down, and perhaps a travel swing (so it's small & easy to take back with you) or a bouncer would do.  There are also the Boppy newborn loungers which I found to be very handy & really easy to pack up, and might do the trick for that first month, in the event that you are tight for space when packing.

I wouldn't worry about a big swing (that's something you can have at your home instead) since that would be awfully hard to take apart & travel back home with.

  • Congrats!!! I think most people covered it...but skip the baby powder. You aren't supposed to use it anyways.

  • Congrats!  Instead of a bath tub I would bring the comfy bear bath sponge - they are like 6 bucks at babies r us and you can use it in the sink to give baby a bath.  Also burp cloths - I would get the cheap gerber cloth diapers that come in the 12 pack.  They are really absorbant and work better than the decorative ones.  Good Luck!

  • I think everyone got the basics, but I would add that you should bring your stroller (I couldn't stay in a hotel room 24/7) and weather appropriate hats and blankets for going outside.

  • a little late to this, but congrats!

just wanted to add that you may want to buy several types of bottle nipples. some babies can be very fussy and we had to go through several types before he found one he liked.

The gas drops were a lifesaver as well. Also a pacifier can be helpful, and I agree with the previous posts of a pack n play with a bassinet level/change table. SO helpful!

Oh and camera, videocamera, any chargers required for them or camera cards and lots of batteries! :)

  • I agree with the sling advice - get a Moby wrap for sure.  It will really help you all bond with the baby.

    Congrats!
