That’s a shame she’s so adamant to you about it @ladyk127. Because I work in healthcare, I think everyone assumes I’ve gotten it. I had 3 people ask me yesterday. I ended up telling 1 I was pregnant and may get it later. The other two, I simply said that I just hadn’t gotten it yet but my husband had. That seemed enough for them because they really only wanted to talk about side effects anyway.
Question for those choosing not to get the vaccine- how locked down do you all anticipate remaining up through your deliveries? No judgment either way (well, some judgment if you're like, going out to the club right now lol), I'm just genuinely curious what others are doing.
I work entirely from home and am also living my life basically completely quarantined right now (I don't go on errands, see friends etc.). I honestly don't know if I can keep this up through August. I've been planning to get the vaccine in part because I feel like it will really help my mental health to be able to see people and do things this spring/summer without losing my mind with worry over getting the virus. I was even hoping (maybe naively) that by summer it would be possible to do stuff like have a baby shower or maybe take a small babymoon trip, if I and the others involved are all vaccinated. Now I'm torn because obviously I don't want to put doing frivolous stuff ahead of the baby's wellbeing, but the idea of continuing to live like I am now for another seven months is definitely sending me to a dark place. How are you all feeling about this kind of stuff?
@the_most_happy I feel pretty locked down. I do work retail a few times a week but don't socialize outside of my in laws and my one other pregnant friend, and go grocery shopping once a week. MH does go into the office, but once case numbers even hint at a rise we shut a lot out.
I'm not planning on getting the vaccine mostly because it won't be available to my age group until August or September here. Unsure how I feel about getting it when breastfeeding, haven't done that research yet. My risk is extremely low with my choices and the sheer lack of cases in my province. I think we currently have 12.
I am hoping to have some of MH family in town in the summer to help build a deck and have a small outdoor shower, but as it stands right now, anyone who comes into our province needs to isolate for 14 days (hence the very low case numbers), so its dependent on that.
I think the biggest thing is to make a decision that suits you and your life. If I worked in an ER or nursing home, even with low case numbers, I would 100% get it.
Loving this respectful vaccine conversation!! I'm due to get my first dose in the next few weeks. As an educator at an independent school that has been in person since August, I can't quarantine at home like I'd like to. We don't socialize outside of our pod, restrict trips out to stores, and generally stay as locked down as possible, but with my job I'm exposed frequently. Even my doctor said if I was able to work from home, she wouldn't push me to get it, but with my risk factors she's on board. It's so personal though, not only to your feelings re: the lack of information in pregnant people, but also your risk factors AND your ability to lock down. Super nuanced.
So the cousin that I referred to in my earlier post who had been TTC and was sending me all of these articles that it's fine to get the vaccine while pregnant just FaceTimed me earlier to tell me she was pregnant. She was sobbing because she's scheduled to get the vaccine but now she isn't sure (because I was so adamant about not getting it) and I honestly didn't know what to say. She has terrible asthma and even not being pregnant is very high risk. I didn't know how to tell her that it would probably be fine while also refusing to get it myself. So hard on everyone to make the right call.
@the_most_happy I'm going to be pretty quarantined until the baby comes. While I don't love the idea of being isolated for that long, I've already had a scare from a teacher friend of mine that I was with before she was told she was a close contact. I have bad anxiety so that was worse for me than feeling isolated honestly. We'll have to see how I feel once the warm weather comes and the positivity rate in the state is low again.
I won't be eligible to get the vaccine until August at the earliest. If I can get it then, I will. If I was offered it today I probably wouldn't just because I had a loss recently and it weighs heavily on my mind already. I currently work from home, and only get curbside pickup so I'm not exposed to other people at all.
@the_most_happy I'm def over the isolation as well. We see people outside, with masks on and distanced and I think that's pretty safe. However it's obviously super cold so we haven't seen anyone in a while. Besides that, I literally don't go inside anywhere. Either curbside pickup, delivery, or DW goes. So I'm pretty isolated. DW goes to the grocery store, but otherwise same as me. Amazon makes a lot of money from my household... DD is in school but all the teachers got vaxxed and the kids wear masks so thinks it's relatively safe. I'm scheduled to work from home till Sept and so is DW.

@the_most_happy The vaccine isn’t currently available for me in my area but I don’t go out and I am new to my area so have no friends *yet*. With the pandemic and General Orders for our military installation it’s kind of hard to get out and know people. Plus being military my husband has to stay locked down pretty much.
He has a curfew as well from 10pm-5am. We also can’t have 6+ visitors in our home and can’t have gatherings of 50+ outdoors but our state also has a limit of 25.
We can’t go 150 miles away from post without a pass, and if we have a pass we would need to quarantine for a week then have restricted movement for another week (can only go to work). We have to do grocery pick up and can’t dine in restaurants (food has to be delivered or pick up.) He might have to deploy during this pregnancy, so he is required to get the vaccine due to this. During the holidays they locked down post as well, canceled trusted traveler which allows those without a DoD ID on post as long as someone in The vehicle had a valid military ID.
They also have hand wash station on post at the hospital, gas stations, commissary and PX etc. Mask mandates are required for military service members and family on and off post. These places are also manned to make sure people are hand washing plus they check your temp and ask you questions about how your feeling and where you’ve been. Violating any of the general orders is subject to an article 15 which is not good.
@the-most-happy, I actually put off getting pregnant for about 8 months because I was so anxious about pregnancy and COVID, and then decided to go for it. I teach full time (in person) and my husband is an essential worker as well (law enforcement). I did distance learning until September, but I’ve been face-to-face since then. We just don’t have the luxury (in our professions) to work from home. We are very careful. Always masked at work. A small pod of immediate family for our social life. BUT, we are in southern CA and numbers are INSANE. I got pregnant...and then immediately got COVID. It was terrifying. But, a part of me is grateful, because now I don’t have to make the decision about the vaccine. My doctor said the CDC is saying 90 days of antibodies being present, but that in all likelihood, it’s probably a lot longer than that. So, she told me not to get the vaccine. I don’t plan on widening my circle, but I do plan on continuing to socialize with my family pod all the way up to delivery. We actually have all had it now, so I think (I hope) the chances of us spreading it again within our pod is less likely. My mental health CANNOT stay totally isolated all the way until August.
Wow, that irony came in hard @ladyk127! Did she know she was pregnant when she was sending you all that stuff encouraging you to get it? At least she realizes now how hard it is of a decision. If your cousin is eligible now, she will still be eligible later too, likely, so that it could give her time to make an appointment and talk to her doctor first. I had my appointment made, but canceled when I got my positive test. I can always get vaccinated later though. Your cousin wouldn’t have to decide right now or just never be able to get it (barring vaccine depletion or something huge).
@the_most_happy I think one upside/downside of working in Healthcare is that I don't have option of fully working from home. I still have to go to work almost every day but now all my coworkers are vaccinated and masked and I honestly feel pretty safe at work. And we get our adult human interaction. I'm not seeing people socially though bc I actually feel thats where the higher risk would be. Even the coworkers who had it mostly through social gathering at home or at break rooms, not from patients. Sometimes I feel like whining but I can't imagine how different life is for some people during this quarantine and at least I have job security during all of this.
I do really appreciate everyone having very civil and open discussion and respecting each other. This warms my heart. Sending thousand and one prayers for everyone that we get through this safely.
@emmylou78 I know, right. She didn’t know yet when she was sending me all of the articles. She has PCOS and erratic cycles because of it. She didn’t realize she had ovulated and was pregnant. So i guess technically she was pregnant when she sent them, she just didn’t know it yet. She ended up moving her vaccine appt out a few weeks until after her first ultrasound and so she will be in her second trimester. Her brother is a doctor and that was his suggestion.
