When do you / did you have your appointment? 24 week appointment today at 24+6
How was your appointment? It was good. I met my new OB for the first time (moved and had the A/S and a 20 week appt with an NP).
What'd they do? I peed in a cup and then chatted with my OB.
My 2 thoughts/questions to her were around weight gain and being GBS+.
I lost 15lbs but gained it all back plus 3lbs. So I'm only 3lbs heavier than I started the pregnancy at but she seemed concerned that I gained 18lbs in 10 weeks. My theory on it is that my body cannot/does not subsist on the limited calories I was getting by having so many food aversions (or just an aversion to food in general, honestly). So it was like having a stomach bug - it's not actual weight loss and you gain it all back when you start eating normal food again. But this is supposed to be the top OB in the area - everyone raves about her and she always gets awards for her bedside manner and such. Her delivery wasn't necessarily bad I just really didn't think it was that big of a deal and/or almost better that I'd gained it back b/c I shouldn't have lost it in the first place. She said I should be gaining a lb a week the rest of the pregnancy which makes sense and would put me at the exact amount of gain I had with my prior 2 pregnancies total (from starting weight although I only lost 5lbs each with them). We'll see if that actually happens or if the holidays impacted my weight gain at all. She said I looked very healthy so idk.
For GBS+, I hadn't actually seen stats on likely recurrence, just that it's higher if you were + in a prior pregnancy. Well she said I have a 70% chance of having it and it really bummed me out. I had inconsistent labor with my second and had to go to the hospital earlier than I would have liked to make sure I had enough time to get the ABX. I'm taking a probiotic with the specific strain that was studied and showed a reduction in GBS+ results but I feel like it's so unlikely that I'll be negative this time and it sucked. I'm planning an epidural so it's not like I'm wanting to wait until the last second to show up but I was so anxious about making sure I had the full 4 hours of antibiotics last time it sucked. And I had augmented labor so I don't even have a good idea of how quickly I'd progress.
Otherwise, I really liked the OB. She gave me great info that I didn't get at my last appointment about their policies. I'm low risk for complications so don't need a ton of appointments which is nice (such a hassle at this point with 2 kids not in daycare and being 20 mins from the office).
Feel free to ask any questions - either leading up to your appointment about what to expect or after your appointment. For the GD test, I'm doing the 1hr and they gave me the drink to take home. I'm going to make a lab appointment but for anyone whose done it already this pregnancy or has done it in the past, will I get priority b/c they have to take it at the right time? That's always been the case for the 2 hour but that's 3 blood draws and you don't get priority for when it starts, you wait with the plebs and then when they call you you drink the drink and they start the timer and do the 0hr draw when you're done with it. This time I'm drinking it before I get there.
@kvh22 sorry to hear about your new OBs weight concerns! I'm obviously not a doctor but based on your summary and your experience with your prior pregnancies, it sounds like you're gaining appropriately? Now that you're past your food aversions, I'd just try to eat a balanced 3 meals a day until the end and wouldn't worry too much about the #'s on the scale!
For the glucose screening, I was just at my OBs this morning (because they needed an additional scan image) and had them clarify the instructions/timing. My appt is at 3pm next week so they asked that I finish the drink within 5-10mins and have it completely finished by 2pm. So to start drinking it around 1:50pm, be finished by 2pm, and head into the office and be checked in by 2:50pm. Then they will call me back to the lab to have my blood drawn at 3pm. I believe for the glucose test they give us priority over the other patients waiting.
When do you / did you have your appointment? Had my appt this morning (23 weeks
How was your appointment? It was great... it was with my fav midwife who delivered 2/3 of my kids and was so nice to see her!
What'd they do? Just normal check up!
Feel free to ask any questions - either leading up to your appointment about what to expect or after your appointment. Not a question but I cannot believe I'm one appt away from every other week appts. This is flying by and I'm a little sad about it going so fast!
@kvh22 I just had my appt at 25 weeks and my urine was positive for GBS. I did not have it with either of my first two. I’m so annoyed about it because it is so early and I could really really easily not be positive for the entire rest of my pregnancy but just because of this random urine test I’ll now be treated as positive no matter what. My midwife ordered Amoxicillin because I guess if it’s in your urine they assume you have a UTI, I have no symptoms, but I’m taking the antibiotic just to be safe. I also started taking femdophilous probiotic and am going to adjust my diet to cut out sugar completely and eat more bitter astringent greens. I’m completely confident I’ll have it gone in a week it’s just so frustrating that even if I never test positive again it’s just a done deal now in their eyes. Between that and my 2 vessel cord diagnosis I am so disappointed to see my natural birth going out the window. I have half a mind to say I don’t trust their test because my last urine test on 12/16 supposedly tested positive for CANNABINOIDS?!? I have never once in my life touched or even encountered any derivative of marijuana—no cbd, no hemp oil, nothing— (not against it, just never needed or wanted to) so when I saw that on my result I laughed right out loud. And then I remembered that someone else’s sample was in the little cubby when I put mine in so I don’t have the most faith in them honestly.
Sorry that was long but I feel you on the GBS stress.
Oh and let me make you feel better about your weight. I’ve gained 35 lbs already, same as with my first two, and my midwife at this appointment said my weight looks good. Which is when I decided I like her. I’ve gained exactly 50lbs each pregnancy and lost it all quickly.
When do you / did you have your appointment? 12/31 and I will see the MFM specialist for the first time on 1/13
How was your appointment? Other than a false positive for cannabinoids 🤪 and finding out I supposedly have GBS in my urine which ruins my entire plan of a completely unmedicated birth, at least I don’t have gestational diabetes 👍🏼
What'd they do? GD test, pee in a cup and ruin my life.
Feel free to ask any questions - either leading up to your appointment about what to expect or after your appointment. I have no idea what to expect at the MFM, both my prior pregnancies were totally uncomplicated and natural. This one seems like nothing is going right 😔
@kvh22 I'd be very annoyed if my OB was concerned about my being up 3lbs from pre-pregnancy weight at 26 weeks. That seems ridiculous to me.
When do you / did you have your appointment? 1/5
How was your appointment? It was fine. I talked to the dr about the 1hr glucose test, which I'll do again at my 28 week appointment. I did it once already at my 12 week appointment and just barely passed, so I'm thinking I probably won't pass this time. She did say if I fail that I have the option to monitor my blood sugar throughout the rest of the pregnancy like I did last time if I do not want to do the three hour test. I am leaning towards doing the 3 hour this time though, because even though it sucks it was quite stressful to have to check my blood sugar 4 times a day for 12 weeks last time.
What'd they do? It was pretty short (maybe 10 minutes), just blood pressure, weight, urine sample, doppler and measuring fundal height. So far I've gained 1 pound more than I had at this point in my last pregnancy (16 lbs vs 15 lbs)
Feel free to ask any questions - either leading up to your appointment about what to expect or after your appointment. I can't believe this is my last "monthly" appointment before they switch to every 2 weeks. (That happens after the 28 week appointment right?)
@Serenamarr serious wtf to the cannabinoids! I have also never indulged in any cannabis products. What did they say? I know poppy seeds can make it look like you're on opiods. Is there something random they used to explain it away? And was it the same urine sample that had the GBS in it or was that a different appointment? I will say, I got the antibiotics well before my potocin and epidural and I was able to walk around with it just fine. I know it's not completely natural and I hate that it messes with both my and the baby's microbiome but as far as a natural unmedicated birth, I don't think it has to interfere too much. But if it really could be not yours, I'd push to continue to get tested (they likely do that anyways) and see what they say if it literally never is present again.
Thanks for the input on weight gain! I went back and looked and I gained less than 2.5lbs from Dec 10 to yesterday which is one day shy of 4 weeks so I'm pretty sure I basically just started eating normally at 15ish weeks and and gained everything back pretty quickly so I'm much less concerned. I'm considering writing to her to clarify b/c a lot of my unease is from perceived concern that wasn't flat out expressed. I've always had a very healthy relationship with food and my body size (but talk to me about my freckles...that's my insecurity of choice). But last night I was all sorts of in my head about wanting a pop tart after dinner and feeling like crap about it. I have never felt bad/guilty wanting to eat junk food before. I've always essentially followed intuitive eating (without knowing that was a thing until recently) and don't have issues with binging sweets or junk because of it. Unfortunately we had packed up our scale with the move and I needed to buy batteries so don't really know when I gained the weight.
@Serenamarr That doesn’t seem right or fair! I would definitely push for a retest considering the cannabinoid positive you don’t partake in! Seems very likely it could have been mixed up with another patients urine sample and the random GBS positive as well would make me question it. I’m sorry this throws your plans off, I’d be frustrated too!
@kvh22 I hear ya on the weight gain concerns of the OB. I’ve gained like 40lbs all in all but started out underweight by close to 30lbs. (Those shouldn’t count then, right?! Lol.) First it was “you’re too skinny and need to eat eat eat”, now it’s “you don’t need to go overboard or baby will be too big and you may need a c-section”.🙄 I’ve supposedly already reached my weight gain ‘allowance’ but I’m not stressing it considering the ‘hurry up, slow down’ advice it’s been and they say they have no concerns with baby’s development and whatnot.
When do you / did you have your appointment? Had appt this morning, 25 weeks today.
How was your appointment? It was good and finally got a couple solid answers. There’s been some debate the past couple appts on my due date because baby is measuring ahead even though I’m certain on my LMP. They sent me to a specialist between this appt and the last for a more in depth scan and everything looked great with baby boy, he’s measuring 5-9ish days ahead but they say there’s no concerns. And not moving due dates since baby comes when baby wants usually fluctuating around 2 weeks up or down anyway.
What'd they do? I had my 1hr glucose test (not as bad as I thought it would be!), urine checked and an ultrasound.
Feel free to ask any questions - either leading up to your appointment about what to expect or after your appointment. I wanted to apologize for being MIA and so hit and miss lately. Started out strong participating in nearly every thread to near radio silence but I’m hoping to bounce back. The holiday season is just always a downer period for me with lack of family involvement and I definitely felt it this year regardless of my best efforts to jazz things up for the kiddos considering how 2020 was in general. Social media makes me more blue seeing everyone’s festivities so I feel like I’ve been in a social media everything avoidance since around Thanksgiving. Just in case anyone was thinking “who the heck are you” or something else, I swear I’ve been here and will be better about jumping on again!
@bluey101321 I think the weight gain big jumps scare the doctors sometimes when the average ends up being okay. I was also not super involved between our moves and the holidays (and working with 2 kids at home) from mid-Nov until very recently.
Just had an appointment yesterday which was great - although it had been 8 weeks since I saw my doctor (they lessen the appointments because of COVID). Sort of disappointed because my next appointment is in a month and it's only a video appointment, which is a bummer. I reminded my doctor that I went into labor at 37 weeks with my first and she said I could come in at 34 weeks for an in person and then it will hopefully be weekly after that? I love my doctor and trust her but it's been crazy having no appointments for most of this pregnancy!
@eahayes we're doing monthly for longer than I usually would and only seeing the OB every other (NP at the alternating ones but still seen and doing doppler). I think I have a 24 (OB), 28 (NP), 32(OB), 36(NP), and then go to weekly. Going 2 months without a quick doppler seems weird. I'm all for my schedule above but I think I might have just done 35, 37, 38, 39. 40 so maybe this isn't fewer appts?
Had my 24 week appt yesterday - passed the glucose screen, talked about my second dose of the COVID vaccine (scheduled for Monday), and drew 11 vials of blood (IBD is fun!) but all is well. I'm only a little low in iron but no longer anemic and don't need an iron infusion, which is fantastic.
We talked about birth and she ran the vbac calculator again. My chances of a successful vbac are now only 47% because pregnancy weight gain has increased my BMI. I'd still like to plan for it, but I'm open to another cesarean if it's indicated. I told her I'd like to labor at home as long as possible and avoid another epidural this time, but she wants me to come in when contractions are 5-10 minutes apart (I was hoping for 3-5 min). She's fine with skipping the epi since they can quickly place a spinal in almost all cases (she said general is only required approx twice a month in their practice).
My next appointment is on 1/12, but I did my 1 hour glucose test today! No results yet, but it really was fine. I was expecting the gross orange drink, BUT when I arrived she asked me which flavor I wanted. I didn’t know there were options! I went with lemon lime and I have to say, it really wasn’t bad at all! Because of COVID, you can leave and come back in an hour, so I conveniently went to Michael’s across the street from the hospital and scored some 80% off Christmas wrapping paper for next year! Success! Haha.
I also had a video chat with the doula this morning and officially decided to move forward with hiring her, so that’s exciting! She looks so much like the actress Kathryn Hahn and the second we hung up, my husband and I both said that haha.
On an unrelated note, I’ve been watching labor and delivery videos on YouTube for the past 48 hours. Still undecided on whether it’s a great idea or a terrible idea, but either way, my husband is sufficiently terrified and I’m glad there will be a doula there to add some calm vibes to the room, haha.
@theblondebump I'm with you on the glucose drink - I don't understand why people hate it so much. It tastes like one of those little barrel juice drinks you have when you're a kid.
@theblondebump I've been binging on l/d youtube as well. Which is kind of silly considering this is my 3rd baby and I'm a nurse. But I don't think it is a bad idea for a ftm. If anything, you can see that experiences vary.
I had an appointment this morning! Everything looked good - blood pressure, weight, belly measurement and all that.
I also had my glucose test. The drink wasn’t too bad and I should have my results tomorrow or Wednesday. I did chat with the doctor about the likelihood of having GD a second time. He said having it once doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have it again. When I asked about skipping the three hour if I failed today’s one hour and just going on with GD treatment, he said that would be totally fine. So I’m glad he’s on board with that, if it ends up being the case. That three hour test was just miserable.
Today was also the first time I saw a male OB! My previous practice only had a couple women doctors on staff. This practice has a lot of doctors and two men, I think. He was super nice and seemed a bit more attentive than the others I’ve seen here, so that was nice.
@theblondebump I never watched videos but I read Ina May's Guide to Childbirth. I'm not a home-birth/midwife person and fully planned on and had epidurals but it was great to read the experiences.
This will be my 3rd time taking the glucose "challenge" (and at 3 different labs) and I've never been given a flavor option. I think for me a super sweet flat drink is just gross. I can't drink flat soda. So this is probably part of my issue. The first time I took it I almost couldn't finish it in the allotted amount of time. This time my office gave it to me to take home and I just need to show up to get the blood draw. Also - I don't have to fast before which I don't think has ever been the case.
@rexnie I already talked about this but i feel you on wanting to be at home longer and being bummed about having to go to the hospital earlier (I was told 7-8 mins apart last time for baby #2 when I was GBS+ so having a 70% chance of that again is frustrating).
Just got a call with my 1 hour glucose test results and I failed miserably! Apparently normal is 134 or under and mine was 183. Crap! So now I have to go do the 3 hour test. I might just try and do it tomorrow and get it out of the way.
@bbrahmbhatt luckily were allowed to leave in between each hour and my hospital is across the street from a shopping center with a Michael’s, bed bath and beyond, and Barnes and noble, so I will just go walk around and browse in between haha. I also have an ob appointment tomorrow and they are next door to each other, so my plan is to go start the 3 hour test, then go to my ob appointment, then go back to the glucose test, and then shop in between the next breaks haha. I hope I pass though!! Everyone send positive vibes please 😊
@riff323 and @theblondebump I think it really depends on that flavor you get. I had one that wasn’t bad, one that was so bad I could barely finish and the one I took this morning wasn’t terrible, but it certainly wasn’t good!
@theblondebump sorry you didn’t pass the 1 hour - best of luck on the 3! @rexnie I hope you get your VBAC if that’s what you would prefer.
I had my 24 week appointment this morning, bright and early. I did the glucose screen, HB was in the 150s, and I measured right on track with fundal height.
I had my bubble majorly burst when I found out that not only can my husband not come back into the hospital if he leaves once the baby is here (not an option because I am so immobile after a c-section), but there is NO NURSERY OPTION. 😭 This will be the first baby that will be staying in my hospital room, and quite frankly, that sounds awful.
On another note, my c-section will be the week of 4/26. I should have a date by the next appointment at 30 weeks. 😬
@BuckeyeNut05 that is such a bummer! I haven't asked about labor protocols yet because quite frankly, things are subject to change by the time I deliver, but I keep seeing a lot of people on here saying their support person cannot leave the hospital whatsoever and it is making me nervous too! Worse to me is the thought of having to labor and give birth with a $*&^# mask on, though. All I can smell when I put a mask on is my own bile and it's really disgusting.
@BuckeyeNut05@riff323 I am holding out hope that the nursery will reopen by April if covid gets under better control by then. Maybe restrictions for spouses and visitors will be loosened too.
Update from yesterday’s appointment: all of my labs were good and I passed the one hour glucose test for the first time ever! I’m so used to failing it I had to have DH read the results to confirm I actually passed it. 😂
I went this morning to to the lab to do my 3 hour and my plan was start the test with the fasting blood sugar, then go next door to my ob appointment, and then return to the lab for the 3 draws. Well, I fasted last night, got up early to go to the lab, did the fasting blood sugar draw and then went to my ob appointment and at the ob appointment, my doctor said since my blood sugar was so high at the 1 hour test, she would recommend me just starting to treat for GB. So good news was I didn't have to do the 3 hour test, but bad news was now I have to actually monitor my blood sugar and potentially treat for GB.
She said that if I wanted to I could do the 3 hour test and re-evaluate, but honestly, I just felt like if it was that high the first time, I'd rather be safe than sorry and just do what I have to do to make sure 100% that baby is healthy. So I have a virtual appointment with a GB counselor next week and will have to start taking my blood sugar 4x a day and probably adjusting my diet.
On a brighter note, baby's heart beat was healthy and my ob said my weight was good. I got my Tdap vaccine while I was there today and a bunch of paperwork to fill out for the hospital. I also scheduled my 32 week ultrasound (will be able to see baby's growth at that point) and also had to schedule a consult with the anesthesiologist since I have herniated discs in my lumbar spine from pre-pregnancy and to make sure there won't be any problem with getting an epidural. I also scheduled my next 4 appointments haha because now they are every 2 weeks and I like to make sure that I am rotating evenly between all the doctors in the practice, so I'm familiar with all of them since I don't know which one will be delivering.
@theblondebump Sorry about the high fasting numbers. Fasting levels are typically the hardest to control (compared to post-meal numbers). At least you didn't have to do that miserable 3 hour test. And good for you for having such a positive attitude about it! We should probably start a GD thread since I'm sure there will be more of us joining you soon. We had one in my last group and it was very helpful.
@kadeephd yes, good idea on the thread, I was thinking that too.
My fasting numbers were actually fine, it was 91 and I guess 96 or lower is normal. But since my 1 hour test was so high (183), my ob said their typical policy was to just treat me for GB (if the 1hr was higher than 180). I ate an egg mcmuffin right before the 1 hour test lol, so maybe that wasn't a good idea, but whatever, it can't hurt to monitor my blood sugar and eat healthier. At the very least I'll eat healthier the next 3 months and maybe gain less weight haha. Not that I was eating super unhealthy up to this point, but I do enjoy pressed juice occasionally and I eat A TON of fruit, so will just switch up the fruits I'm eating to some that have less sugar and will cut down on carbs.
@theblondebump Oh OK I misunderstood your comment. I monitored my blood sugar last pregnancy without officially getting diagnosed with GD. I failed the 1 hour and declined to do the 3, in favor of monitoring. I think you are right that it definitely helped me make healthier choices and gain less weight during the last tri. If I fail the one hour again this time though I'm going to take the 3 hour (assuming it's not so high they immediately diagnose me). It was kinda stressful for me and I'd rather not have to do it again if I can avoid it.
Ehhh I also failed the one hour this week 😭 I go back for the 3 hour on the 21st (seems like an eternity away lol) my blood work also came back with low iron and low platelets. She suggested I stop taking a prenatal with Dha. I was wondering if any of you had any thoughts on this as everything I’ve read so far has suggested how dha is very important especially during the 3rd trimester.
Sorry you also failed @theblondebump. I got the fruit punch flavor I drank it in .5 seconds 😂 I thought it was going to be horrible because everyone told me it was I thought it tasted exactly like Hi-c I didn’t mind it at all.
So, I had my 3-hour yesterday and I passed with flying colors. It was a good thing I fasted; I wasn't sure if I was doing a 1 or 3 hour, since I did both in the first trimester (I failed the 1 hour because like @theblondebump I ate right before but passed the 3 hour). I'm glad it's over!
I asked on the virtual hospital birthing class we had the other night and the nursery is currently open at our hospital. I plan on having the baby rooming in the whole time, but good to know just in case!

@kadeephd good luck on the one hour! 🤞
Overall, a good appointment!
@rexnie I hope you get your VBAC if that’s what you would prefer.
@kadeephd and @grilledcheeezin good luck!
I asked on the virtual hospital birthing class we had the other night and the nursery is currently open at our hospital. I plan on having the baby rooming in the whole time, but good to know just in case!
