Normally I am a pretty strict “after Thanksgiving” kind of gal, but I think I’m pulling the trigger early this year. I love Christmas decorations so much! I have to work the day after thanksgiving, which is my usual decorating day, and after that we are going to my sister’s house for the weekend. I want to come home to Christmas decorations, so I think they are going up this weekend and I am pretty excited.
100% after thanksgiving only. I love fall and thanksgiving, and want it to last as long as possible. Mh works A LOT in December so we usually put it up the weekend after thanksgiving before we don’t see him for a month. Same will happen this year.
The tree goes up and gets decorated the Sunday evening after thanksgiving. The rest of the decorations are kind of a free for all when we have time. But, we have a lot of birthdays in November so it doesn’t really feel like Christmas until after that weekend is over. If it wasn’t for that I could see us putting it up earlier
We do just about all of our decorating the weekend after Thanksgiving! Usually we get our tree in December though, so it doesn’t look too dead by Christmas. DH’s favorite holiday is Thanksgiving, so we can’t do Christmas until after that haha.
🤣🤣🤣 I’m usually an after Thanksgiving person, because my moms birthday is around Thanksgiving, but 2020 sucks so I already put up my trees, and I did 3 of them this year! 🙈

@chindimples04 3 trees?! I like your style!! I'm Canadian so we celebrate Thanksgiving in October. Sometimes we aim to have our tree up by now but our house flooded a few weeks ago and we're starting renovations soon to repair the damage so while all the boxes of decorations are out of storage, we probably won't put everything up right away.

100% after Thanksgiving. Usually it's the weekend immediately following Thanksgiving and part of our Thanksgiving weekend festivities! But... this year we already have it up! Whoops! Just trying to find a bright light (literally... the lights on the tree) during this darker holiday season.
I am a fan of early decorating (and early Christmas music) but not everyone in my household shares the same sentiment. So our tree goes up right after Thanksgiving.

We definitely do after Thanksgiving. I try to get the tree at least out and assembled on Sunday after Thanksgiving, but either last year or the year before I didn't have the tree up until like 2 weeks before Christmas. Whoops.
Does everyone put lights on their tree? We never have because we weren't sure how well Gir would handle them the first Christmas we had her. She does sometimes attempt to lick or chew our phone charger cords and since we didn't want a Christmas Vacation mishap we don't bother with lights.
I'd love a tree/winter/Christmas decor GTKY in a couple weeks!

@inthewoods23 is Gir a cat? My cat did fine with the lights, she however liked to climb trees, and knocked the tree down a few times. Then again, she didn't chew on cords normally.
@Kenneylynn3 yes she's my cat. She hasn't had interest in climbing thankfully. We have the extra padding under our carpet so even a fragile ornament would have a good chance of not breaking were she to ever decide to bring the tree down.

@inthewoods23 we had to spray out tree with bitter spray because my cats are arseholes. They both chew cords to get attention but the bitter spray helped.
Usually it would be the weekend after Thanksgiving, but I'd start listening to music about a week before.
However, because 2020, there's already 2 local radio stations playing Christmas music, and we will probably clean up the house and put out our decorations sometime in the next week, whenever my husband and I are both off for the same 6ish-hour chunk of time (difficult lately because I work in retail).
I'm also seeing more people's Christmas lights up on my drive home at night which doesn't surprise me this year, and makes me smile. Also we had 70-degree temps last weekend so a lot of people took advantage.
Yeah, that's our thought too on making SOMETHING this year make us smile.
*cough*also 2020 + lazy = a couple things here any there are still up from last year*cough*
Also also I work at a craft store and we've had Christmas decor out for a few weeks and we're lucky I haven't thrown my entire paycheck at the store for all the pretty.
(oops forgot to tag @Aerialmrs to give my post context...)
@inthewoods23 we have a pre-lit tree, and while our dog is a small terrier/chihuahua mix, he's not a cat lol.
But we did get little jingle bell ornaments that we put around the entire bottom of the tree so that we'd hear if the dog started investigating a bit too close, and we kept all breakable ornaments in the top 2/3 of the tree. Turns out he couldn't care less about it aside from a passing sniff, so we've stopped doing the warning bells.
I'm a strict "Honor Thanksgiving before Christmas!" type, but MH has a fantastic trait of being really good at all things decorating. So, if he has anything to do with it, at the stroke of midnight after Thanksgiving dinner has been cleared, all the decorations will probably go up while I'm sleeping. I will have to beg him to remember to wait for me to decorate the tree. The bonus in all this is that he's also amazing at putting it all away come the New Year. Winning!
It was always the day after Thanksgiving for me growing up and until I met MH. Since then it’s always been delayed. We stay with his family for Thanksgiving and they have tradition on the Saturday after where we all pile in his parents suburban and go day trip shopping spanning 3 states (we depart MA, go to NH, then up to ME, and back to MA), so now the tree always goes up the weekend after that.
This year we’re staying home though and skipping the weekend shopping to stay safe. (I’m actually really sad about this, I look forward to spending the day in the kitchen with my mother in law). MH was actually really sweet and called me this morning to tell me he was going to bring the tree and decorations up from the basement on Thanksgiving night so I could start setting up first thing the next morning ❤️ He knew I needed the pick me up because I’m bummed about our decision to stay home.
@bumblebee0210 Forgive me if this is super naive or even somehow offensive, but I wondered this the other day. We were in Bed, Bath, and Beyond and I noticed the Hanukkah display: it was one measly presentation of things in a sea of Christmas stuff. Does that bother you when picking up your Hanukkah candles? or are there specific places to shop that have more of the holiday's selection?
@keikilove Not naive or offensive at all. I actually have a sort-of unique perspective because I grew up in a Christian household and converted after marriage. My husband's mother's family is also not Jewish so most of our relatives celebrate Christmas and we grew up with it. It's strange now to try to carve out our own traditions, and though we have always lit the candles, this year I am going harder to try and establish fun family traditions around the holiday-- we are doing "themed nights" some with actual presents (books one night, consumables another night), one giving to charity, one going out to dinner (though that one might not happen!), one latke night, etc.
And yes-- it is sort of like being a vegetarian at most restaurants. There is like one thing on the menu at each place. Like we have the Hanna Andersson matching hanukkah PJs and there is one print. There are like 15 Christmas prints. (To be fair there are also sometimes generic "winter" things too). There are a few online shops, and for some reason Container Store always has at least a reasonable selection of really nice Hanukkah paper and bags etc., but yeah it's not great. In a way though it's better than the other Jewish holidays though because there is no even hint that like, Rosh Hashanah or Passover (the two biggest) are even happening when you go into like, a Pottery Barn or a Williams-Sonoma or something. So at least Hanukkah's proximity to Christmas means there is some acknowledgement?
*tw lc*
I have a 16-month-old, and since having her the lack of Hanukkah stuff and the utter insanity around Christmas has gotten to me a lot more. It's hard to figure out how to navigate the whole Santa thing (like my sister-in-low has already told us she doesn't want us to tell our daughter that Santa isn't real, because she might ruin it for her daughter, who is the same age), and make Hanukkah special without making it into "Jewish Christmas" and also to incorporate some of the traditions of my own childhood without things being too confusing. We still celebrate Christmas with my parents but we are planning on thinking of it as "Grandma's holiday" so we don't have it at our house.
that's pretty selfish of your sister-in-law. I would have taken offense to the remark. What did you say to her? I'm guessing she didn't even think of it from the other side of things. For example, how your daughter will feel when other kids/ family talk about Santa and she doesn't get anything from him. The only way to handle that is too explain that some people believe in him, but your family doesn't....
Tree is always after Thanksgiving but that's mostly because we get a real tree and any sooner and it would be a dry and dead by Christmas. It also takes a few days to decorate because you need to let it fall and acclimate to your house before you put lights and ornaments on.
Other decorations, Christmas music and outdoor stuff happens before or around Thanksgiving. We also take advantage of any nice days before Thanksgiving to get the lights up. Like tomorrow MH as off and it's supposed to be like 40 degrees
