  • @name1109 That's the one I was talking about! Apparently CARES is more geared towards the employer.

  • @crizz13 I asked my boss about using it and she had stuff to say. Maybe you already asked but it was a helpful conversation at the time.
  • How is everyone doing? I just submitted paperwork for a year leave. My principal was really understanding and agreed to sign my form. I’m so disappointed in my district approving the plan to fully reopen elementary schools. They also did it while advertising that everyone would have to option to use/teach distance learning, but in order to even apply you have to have your doctor sign off on having an ADAA recognized disability. It’s pretty clear they don’t have much of a plan. I’m glad I have the option to take some time away but so frustrated for all my coworkers who have to put themselves and their families at risk.

I'm still in such a state of flux. Our district is currently still in negotiations with most people wanting to be 100% remote. I honestly hated remote teaching and would be OK with the hybrid model they are proposing given all of the safety precautions. I just don't know where we'll end up and we're supposed to start in just a few weeks.

My daughter's school is going to operate under a hybrid model so we are now double checking that DH can be home with her (and help her with remote schooling) 3 days a week for at least September-November. It's such a cluster and makes me so stressed.

ETA - Also my HR lady is being a huge pain about using any time for weeks 37-40. She is adamant that as soon as my doctor writes that I'm out for pregnancy it starts my FMLA which runs concurrently with FFCRA. I pushed back and said that it's not the start of my disability but rather a health concern. I asked if I'd be covered under PWFA (Pregnant Workers Fairness Act) and she said maybe, it would depend on the wording of the letter from my doctor. So now, I've got to figure out the wording of that letter. I'll do it, I'm just so frustrated that it's got to be that much work to take time off because I'm pregnant and there's a pandemic.

  • @surlyjaneausten I'm so glad that you've gotten things settled and don't have to worry for a year! It must be such a huge weight off your shoulders! :-)

  • Both districts in my city announced today that 1st quarter would be remote learning ONLY

  • Ok maybe this isn’t the right place to ask. But I would really like to ask teachers. We have three beautiful lovely young girls. Our 4 yr old is struggling with letters. Shows D...Mom it’s V!!!! Well honey it’s D. Two minutes later in the book...what letter is this...V...it’s a D. She states she’s having problems remembering. This is the kid who just sees things differently. You tell her you can’t do something and she will show you how you CAN. The 2 yr old is usually there reading the book as well and will shout D!!!! So...maybe the 4 yr old is just 4 but maybe not.

I feel like if she does need help early intervention is key. So what is early intervention and how do you get it? We have an audiology test, speech therapist scheduled (she has difficulty with some words) and a doctors apt scheduled. Is there anything else to try? (I had her vision tested a year ago).
  • @name1109 I'm sure there are much more qualified teachers here but I'm curious if she recognizes V? Like, if she saw a V and a D side by side and you asked which one was V, would she know? Also, are there other letters she struggles with and which ones does she know?
  • @name1109 It may be something, but it totally might NOT be. It is not unusual AT ALL for a four year old to not recognize all of their letters. I agree Early Intervention is amazing, but I wouldn't push for anything extra than what you've already got scheduled.

  • @babywiik I have to a certain degree. Tomorrow she’s excited to draw letters in a tray of pudding. I’ll try and see if we put D and V next to each other to see if she can tell me or see a difference.

@crizz13 true. Sometimes (this is horrible) but it’s hard to tell if there is  a concern or if she’s average in this area. I try hard not to compare kids. #1 and #3 picked up speech, letters, shapes, colors etc very young and quickly. #2 thinks differently which is mind blowing. #2s critical thinking and problem solving are incredible. I’m mainly trying to be open to her maybe having a problem but also maybe not as well.
  • @name1109 I know, comparison is SO hard. My first was SUPER verbal (full, intelligible sentences at a very young age). I can't tell you how many sleepless nights I had thinking about EI with our second. Now, fast forward a year later, and she's talking up a storm. Just from what you've written, I wouldn't be concerned.... but that being said, an EI eval can't hurt and you should always go with your mama gut.

  • I had a little meltdown last week with all of the uncertainty of this upcoming school year. The state is pushing the need for full in person and emphasizing the need for city schools to go back to in person learning, despite the fact that the cities have the most cases and the most vulnerable populations. At the same time, they are saying that if cases remain as high as they are now, my district will not be going back in person, at least not full in person. We ended up going through our household budget to figure out if I could afford to take a year out of work-- if I start the year out, it would be completely unpaid. So, we've agreed that I will start the year in school if it's at least a hybrid model and then we'll play it by ear for the rest of the school year as I save up an emergency fund just in case I have to take extra FMLA after my sick days. They said there would be an option for high risk teachers to teach remotely if needed, but I'm not sure if I qualify and they've given 0 information about that so far...
  • Love to all the teachers/educators/school workers!

I teach at the local community college.  Faculty/staff "reported” for fall yesterday (online) and classes start Monday. Most classes are all online, a few people in my department have hybrid classes, but only with 9 students meeting per day. I get so lucky!!

Praying you all get the best case scenario. It's such a hard year!
