That picture is making me soooo hungry. I love French fries but I LOVE mashed potatoes. Yum.
    kpearse99bluetickgal
  • @kpearse99 great minds think alike!

My absolute favorite form is hash browns. Having tator tots is pretty rare but on the off chance I have some they are quite tasty. I must have a thing for crisp on the outside kind of potatoes.

Fries, while I love, sometimes are bleh for me. I think those are easy to screw up in the fryer.

Anyway... to rank these (which is not what's being asked but too bad :D ) I'd say....
    1. hash browns
    2. mashed
    3. fries
    4. tator tot
    5. baked
    6. scalloped

2-5 kind of all fit on the same level though. Like I wouldn't be disappointed with a baked potato instead of mashed.

Also, did you guys know that other brands that are not Ore-Ida can't use the term tator tot? Apparently it's a trademarked name. I'm not sure I believe this though.

@bows22 now the real question is (and careful how you answer because our friendship depends on it  :D kidding!) Do you like smashed potatoes, the kind with lumps in it, or mashed potatoes, the smoooooooooooth kind with no lumps!! Somehow, some people think these are the same thing, and they are NOT!

@inthewoods23 I did not know that!!! I also really appreciate how you decided to rank the potatoes  :D Mine would look like this:
    1. Mashed
    2. Fries
    3. Tator Tots
    4. Baked
    5. Scallop
    6. Hash browns
Although, like you said, I would not turn down any one of them!

  • I missed yesterday’s fry post...but I agree with so many others! I love French fries, but I’ll get sweet potato fries a lot of times when they are an option!

This is so hard...I want them all! Haha. I think I would have to go with mashed though...I would be really sad if I never had mashed potatoes again! My ranking would be:
    1. Mashed
    2. Baked
    3. Tator tots
    4. French Fries
    5. Hash Browns
    6. Scalloped

@kpearse99 oh, Randy!! 😍 Love that movie!!
    kpearse99
  • Evidently an UO: baked and mashed are the least valuable players on team potato. Potatoes should always be fried or at least have some bite to them. Fries are #1, closely followed by tater tots and hash browns (and latkes!)

@kpearse99 no lumps!!!!!! This IS important because my FIL likes them lumpy and it’s not the same.

    My ranking

    1. Mashed
    2. Fries
    3. Scalloped (have you people had scalloped potatoes??)
    4. Tots
    5. Baked
    6. Hash browns, unless we are talking about like a McDonald’s hash brown, in which case this jumps to #4
    bluetickgal
  • @bows22 phew!!! We can still be besties then!!  Also, I love scalloped potatoes but I guess because it's so rare that I have them that I ranked them as number 6. I am right on the same page as you with the McDonald's hashbrowns!!! mmmm those are so good! Super crispy on the outside and warm perfection on the inside!

  • @bows22 Are scalloped potatoes always cheesy? Cuz I think that's the only way I've had them scalloped (ya know, the stuff from the box!  :D). McDonalds hash browns - also good, but sort of like a large tator tot. I also really like the Arby's potato cakes!

  • UO: Just say NO to potatoes! That's why I didn't even participate in yesterday's GTKY hahha.  Potatoes are so thick and pasty that they get stuck in my throat and make me feel like I'm choking.  The only ones I actually like are tater tots. With tons of ketchup.

Potatoes are basically my favorite food so this is hard! I think I've got to go hashbrowns though.

    My ranking:
    1 - Hashbrowns
    2 - Fries
    3 - Mashed potatoes
    4 - Tater tots
    5 - Baked potato
6 - Scalloped (and honestly maybe the only form of potato I don't like)

    Now I want potatoes. Yummmmm.

  • I second @chindimples04 when I say I will take ALL the potatoes, tyvm.

I supposed if I had to pick my lineup it would look like this...

    1. Fries
    2. hasbrowns/latkes/tater tots
    3. mashed
    4. scalloped
    5. baked
    6. any other form of potato :)

  • I think I'd go:

    1. mashed
    2. fries
    3. baked
    4. scalloped
    5. tater tots
    6. hash browns

TBH I wouldn't ever really order/make/crave any of these except mashed potatoes and fries. I don't dislike potatoes at all, they just are a little bland to me.
    kpearse99bluetickgal
  • @bows22 I think latke and potato pancake are used interchangeably often but traditional Jewish latkes are more like potato fritters, basically shredded potatoes that are lumped together and deep fried. It is really hard to find good ones unless you have a good local Jewish deli (or, in my case, a Jewish mother in law who has made them for decades :)).

  • Wow, very strong potato opinions on here! I think it depends on how the mashed potatoes/baked potatoes are prepared. Gravy or no gravy? Mashed with cream or milk? HOW MUCH BUTTER??
    1. fries
    2. Baked (especially if they are twice-baked potatoes)
    3. Mashed
    4. Homefries/hashbrowns/latkes
    5. scalloped
    6. Tots
If you have never had the awesomeness that is a twice baked potato, I recommend that you fix that. It's a mashed potato/baked potato hybrid. YUM!!

  • @emeraldduchess yes twice baked is soooooo good!

Additional mashed potato question - with or without skin?? I love instant potatoes with added milk and butter - and apparently sour cream which I hate on it's own. I had no idea my mom was putting that in our mashed potatoes! My preference would be without the skin, but I'll still eat it.

  • I’m late to the party but I want to participate!!

Mashed potatoes are my favorite but I’m going to be a gigantic child and say that mashed potatoes are only the best when my dad makes them: no skin, very few lumps, tons of garlic, cream, and butter. They are his specialty and a centerpiece at every family holiday.

I also really really love twice baked potatoes (and baked potatoes in general with allll the toppings), but rarely have them. I honestly love all potatoes haha.

Our wedding potato side dish was basically shredded cheesy potatoes that were baked into a tall circle. Think a mix between hash browns and scalloped potatoes baked in a ring. They were SO GOOD!

  • Man, this is hard to choose cause I really love all those forms of potatoes 😆 I would eat them all but I think it’s a toss up between Scalloped or a mashed potatoes as my ultimate favourite.
