Re: Product Spotlight: Bottles and Feeding
we used the Medela bottles to match the pump and didn't have any issues. Since I was BF'ing we used the slowest flow nipple the entire time. Because of weight gain issues I had to supplement with bottles pretty early on (2 or 3 weeks new) and never had any nipple confusion or nursing strikes (we also used a pacifier for a few months until he quit it). We were also gifted some Avent bottles too which were fine.
Honestly from other mom friends some babies take a bottle no issue, others are picky. Some go through a million different bottle types, others pick 1 or 2 to try and wait it out. Some people recommend having another caregiver practice giving the bottles instead of mom if BF'ing (make sure you read up on/watch paced feeding techniques) a few weeks before going back to work, others wing it. Basically do whatever works for you and your family (the sum of most parenting advice)

Bottom line - DO NOT buy a ton of one kind of bottle.
DD1
Age attempted to begin using the bottle: 5ish weeks-14 weeks
What Happened: She flat out refused. She would scream and scream and scream and NOTHING, I mean NOTHING I did or her dad would do would help. We tried every trick in the book, every combination of milk temperature, position she was held in, where I was, who gave her the bottle, etc. Everyone told me if she was hungry enough, she would take the bottle. Not true. She went 10 hours one day when I was back to work without eating. The stress it caused was unreal.
Bottles Tried:
Dr Browns
Avent
Playtex (various nipples)
Medela
Medela with Calma Nipple
Tommy Tippee
Breastflow
Mimijumi
Comotomo
Lansoinah
Happy Ending:
The women at daycare eventually worked their magic and she took a bottle from them after a few days of striking when I went back to work. She ended up taking the Playtex Ventaire bottles but would only take them at daycare, never, ever from a family member. We always used the slowest flow nipples and had to do some educating of our daycare providers about paced feedings and the amount of breastmilk a breastfed baby actually needs (they consistently tried to get me to switch her to faster flow nipples or send more milk).
DD2
Much shorter story. I had a ton of anxiety about giving her a bottle based on the above experience and started trying a little bit later, maybe 6 or 7 weeks old? - she ended up TOTALLY fine with the bottle (we used the same Playtex ones) and it was a non issue.
