First IUI Questions

I had my first IUI yesterday. The nurse wasn't able to figure it out (and it hurt so bad I cried and was suuuuuper embarrassed) so my doctor came in and did the procedure a few minutes later. So now I'm having issues and I'm not sure if they're normal or I should be worried.

Pain-I'm sore. It's similar to the pain after HSG test, but not as severe. Hurts to bend or go to the bathroom.

Peeing-I am peeing SO much. I never have to pee in the middle of the night and I peed three times last night. I'm peeing every 2-3 hours. Not normal for me.

Constipation-I'm backed up, but I think that started with the trigger shot. I've been pooping since IUI, but it hurts a lot, takes longer than normal, and isn't much. It also hurts really bad if I have gas.

Also, all of the pain is worse on my right side, which is the ovary that produced three follicles, versus the left, which produced one. Did any of you have these issues? Are they normal? Thanks.

Re: First IUI Questions

  • @mamasnek I have only had one IUI but this sounds somewhat unusual and you should call your doctor's office to share your symptoms.  That's odd that the nurse 'wasn't able to figure it out'.  There is usually a team of staff for a procedure like this.  I'm really sorry you are so uncomfortable and I hope you are able to sort it out soon.

I had the same experience!! They actually used a tool to pull my cervix straight. Mine apparently tilts towards the right side so it was difficult to get it through the cervix. Or, I think they could get it in the opening, but not through into the uterus. Your pain seems reasonable if they struggled to get the catheter through.

I don't recall if frequent urination and constipation were possible side effects of an IUI or the trigger shot, but I'm sure it could be (constipation was definitely a side effect from the IVF egg retrieval).

I would guess the extra pain on your right side is from ovulating multiple eggs. That's pretty common.

  • Thanks. They said my cervix was much higher than average and that my uterus tilts up. Also, I had been worried I wasn't drinking enough before, so my bladder was overly full for the procedure. And one of the nurses was in training.
  • @mamasnek sorry to hear that your IUI ended up with you feeling crappy. The peeing and constipation might be from all the hormonal changes. The hsg-like soreness was not something I experienced but might be from the nurse doing too much? I also had really bad pelvic pain on the side I ovulated multiple follicles from. It turns out I have mild endometriosis (not visible on ultrasound) on the surface of ovaries and that is probably what caused the pain
  • I think I'm just overly sensitive. My HSG hurt for four days. When I had hysteoscopy that hurt longer than the doctor expected. It's down to a weird feeling in my stomach and cramps similar to a period, but I started progesterone last night, so I'm sure the real "fun" is about to begin.
