Just wondering, am I the only one who was raised in a family that was very firm on the concept of calling in advance of showing up at family members' homes?

MH was raised in a family for whom that is a foreign concept. I'm fairly used to it now, but dang it used to freak me out at first.

@mvt2003 H and I are the same way. I don't live near my family, but when I did we would always call or text to make sure they knew we were coming. I would never just show up. H's family has no idea what that means. My MIL will show up randomly, knock on the door forever so the dogs start going crazy and then just come on in. I hate it.

@mvt2003 @linzrunz I'm pretty sure I would have been driven mad years ago if family stopped by unannounced.

DH's parents have always said to just come in (when we've obviously planned to come over for dinner or something) but he will still knock on their front door before going in. Like why can't he just open the door and say hello. Even the times when they've left a garage door open (because BBQ), DH will knock on the door in the garage to the house. Just. Get. In. Dammit lol

@inthewoods23 Hahaha that's sweet that he still knocks! MH still knocks on his parents' door before he just walks in too. Not during a party or anything, but if we're dropping the dog off for puppysitting or something yes.

@mvt2003 that would drive me crazy! I always call, or want others to call. We live really close to my in-laws so sometimes they’ll show up, because our property is connected, but they always knock at least! I always keep my doors locked though, so no one is busting in on me!

I hate to be 'that guy' but count yourself lucky you have family nearby at all! We are stationed at a military base and have to drive 14 hours for Christmas ... my family would be a 21 hour drive but we never do that because we're not insane.

Edit: yeah I changed my username on the Knot, and in the app, and logged out and in .. and in my profile it says a shorter username. I'm still sorry. It always does this when I post.

@mvt2003 that's how my house was growing up - everyone came by unannounced, not family though- my mom was into a party lifestyle so it was always her drinking friends/random people from bars. Needless to say I HATED it and as an adult my house is my haven and people don't come in unless they're invited. Once they're invited in though it's very "our house is your house".

My ILs are snow birds most of the year, but when they're home we're only a few blocks from them. They like doing everything at their house though.

With cell phones now who doesn't at least call/text about coming over??

I swear, scheduling appointments is so weird.

The general surgeon I saw gave me a number to call if I wanted to make the appointment to remove the cyst. I gave that number a call and they told me someone else would give me a call today. I was in a meeting when they called and they gave me a different number to call to schedule the appointment. That lady then transferred me to the actual scheduling department (or something).

Like why not give me the number that takes me straight to the scheduling department

but good news, the cyst is going away on Thursday next week!

Ugh I hate when people drop by unannounced. I need preparation!! I need to at least straighten SOMETHING!! It gives me so much anxiety. Our parents are hours away so we don't have to deal with that too often, thankfully.

I wasn't sure if I should put this here or in the CS/Questions thread.

I've always done a overnight pad at night for sleeping but I'm so over how it feels the next morning so I'm interested in trying out one of those period cups. Which brands are you favorite? What are your likes/dislikes?

@inthewoods23 - a. hooray for getting the cyst removed! I feel like everywhere is even worse with scheduling than usual since the pandemic hit. b. I use flexdiscs for my heavy days. I don't know how heavy your flow is, but they definitely hold more than tampons or pads and can be left up to 12 hours. Some people say it's not as messy once you get the hang of it, but I've been using them for a few months and they're still pretty messy to me. The only plus is since it's in for 12 hours I can wait until I get home from work and change in the shower/in my own bathroom. I've been considering using an actual cup, but I still have to get over the re-using aspect lol

@manillabar Totally. My call to the eye doctor resulted in scheduling an appointment nearly 2 weeks from now because I try to keep my appointments out of my work hours as much as possible and the 8th was the earliest I could get in since they are spacing people out more for safety. I'll have to look into the flexdiscs. Heavy days for me I consider to be when I need to change a super tampon between 4-6 hours after putting it in. Not too terrible. I need to look up about the cleaning aspect. Like, do you have to clean/wash it before you put it in for another 12 hours? Can you have it in for 12 hours, dump the mess in the toilet, then reinsert it? *noob here* lol

@inthewoods23 the discs are one time use only. so you insert it, and then remove after 12 hours, dump the contents, and put it in the trash. kind of like a longer use tampon without the toxic shock risk. The cup I believe needs to be emptied and rinsed out periodically (or something?) and then sanitized between periods. But you can use the same cup for years apparently, which is the part I'm still trying to get used to lol

@manillabar sounds about right. It would certainly save the hassle I have trying to catch the tampon from falling in the toilet so I can put it in our trash. DH was very nice about expressing the error of my ways in just flushing them. We have a septic tank which I think makes it worse? I'm all for being more eco-friendly too

@inthewoods23 is it weird to say I’m jealous of your heavy days? My heavy days are pretty much my normal and I have to change my super tampon every 1-2 hours. I’d love to be able to go 4-6 hours in between changes.

@linzrunz sounds like you would really benefit from super+ or ultra absorbancy tampons! I always wonder when reporting flow in apps. Like am I reporting it wrong if I say it's heavy when in reality it's manageable even with super tampons? 🤷‍♀️

@linzrunz my heavy days are the same! Such a hassle. I used to wear pads as backup to the tampons because it's so hard to realistically go to the bathroom every 1-2 hours those first few days. I still wear pads for backup and honestly I still fill the disc in 4-6 hours (instead of the promised 12) but have learned (TMI) how to "empty" it so I don't have to change it until I get home, and I still love it more than taking 4-5 tampons with me to work every day

@manillabar that’s why I’ve been scared to try the discs or the cups because I feel like I’d fill them up way before the 12 hours and then have to figure out how to empty it. I always have tampons stashed everywhere (purse, car, etc) with a couple boxes at home so I always have access to them. Heavy + irregular cycles have me freaked out I’ll end up somewhere without one and need it.

@manillabar @inthewoods23 I really like the flex discs too! I have had issues with the cup leaking, no matter what, but the discs are wonderful. I think I might just need a different brand/shape of cup.

@photographerwife check out putacupinit.com! They have a quiz that helps you figure out which cups best work for you. They'll recommend 4 brands that will work based on your results. I went out and bought the Saalt brand one at Target yesterday. Feels fine so far this morning. I'm not 100% confident it's open properly without any folds in it so I did a pantiliner just in case.

@mvt2003 I don't know where on the site I saw it, but they stated there are some brands they don't include on their list/comparison chart due to brand philosophies and how they run their business (something to that effect). I remember Luna being one brand they don't list.

@asf0613 @keikilove yeah it helps avoid the stuck in spoiler situations. If you always remember to hit enter a few times after a picture, that guarantees you won't get stuck since you'll have extra lines to start typing on after the spoiler is created.
