Was anyone a smoker before learning they were pregnant?

I'm sorry if this is against the rules I am very new to this community...I am 40, I have a 19 year old and a 2 year old (yes big gap) so we wanted another little one and have been kind of trying for about a year. I recently gave up and thought I was peri-menopausal and now here I am, 6 and a half weeks pregnant, and mourning the loss of smoking and enjoying wine (on the weekends) while in isolation. I know it sounds awful and I know I will get over it, its very selfish of me to be thinking this but I only found out I was pregnant on Sunday and I'm truly struggling and sad. Was anyone else a smoker? Its a horrible habit and I'm glad I have to give it up (hopefully forever) but it is SO HARD.

  • @lk_1980 I’m not a smoker but I drink. I’ve already told my husband that when my favorite seasonal whiskey is released this fall I’ll be getting a bottle for myself to enjoy once this one is born.

Thanks for sharing, I know it'll pass, it did quickly with my 2 year old but it's literally mourning the loss of something, I really enjoyed it. I know it's best for my health to quit completely but I sure do miss it, and wine. It's going to be a long 33 weeks!
  • Ive never been a smoker but I do love my drinks. With summer coming up I will definitely miss my fruity slushy drinks like bellinis or daiquiri's and my coolers and wine. I will be enjoying drinks after I've given birth.
  • @lk_1980 It's definitely hard to give up the fun things in life for 9 months, especially during a stressful time such as SIP and COVID. I was bummed and mourned that I couldn't partake in all the Zoom happy hours and laugh at the memes about drinking margs instead of coffee in the morning, but like you said you got over it before, and you will again. Then once the baby comes you won't even necessarily want it all right away as the exhaustion is real!! :p

I want a drink SO. BADLY. Our lockdown tradition was to end the work day with a cocktail at 5pm, and I'd been putting in more effort to learn more about mixing cocktails. Finally figured out my perfect martini, got my fancy cherries, and had a batch of grapefruit liqueur almost ready to go. Not to mention that it's Cinco de Mayo, so I'm dying for a good mezcal margarita. Yes, I made a virgin one, but it's not at all the same. The one consolation is that we also restocked our favorite tonic (Fever Tree), which I guess I can still drink and tell myself there's gin inside.

So....don't feel badly about missing the vices. Yes, it's the miracle of life etc. etc., but that doesn't mean that the tradeoffs can't bum you out.
  • The last drink I had was a very expensive glass of red wine on the day I ovulated that turned into drinking half the bottle and that’s why I’m convinced this cycle worked lol I am definitely going to miss having a social drink here and there but I wasn’t a big drinker before and thankfully never smoked so I don’t have to give that up!

Thank you so much for all of your replies, misery loves company lol so I'm glad I'm not alone ❤
  • @lk_1980 Not a current smoker, but last summer I got myself addicted to Juuls (and New Age wine) while spending time with family in FL and I still think about nicotine almost every day! Hang in there.

I'm not a smoker - but we're definitely drinkers and had been drinking quite a bit during quarantine.  One of our local restaurants is doing 96 oz to-go cocktails in those big coffee containers.  We'd get one and drink it all weekend.  Plus there are some local breweries and wineries doing deliveries.....  It all adds up to spending a ton of money haha.  I am going to miss the cocktails though - one great development of everyone being home.
